Top shedding. Although this has highlighted a need for me to put a spreadsheet together for my motoring costs despite not owning a shed.. type

I have had a spreadsheet for years lol.

Tab1 - for recording mileage each month - good for insurance purposes and see what I cover.
Tab 2 - Records all fuel stops and mileages so I have cost per mile for fuel (this good for work when working out what I can make)
Tab 3 - Records all maintenance and costs
Tab 4 - Breakdown of everything else such as VIN number, servicing, MOT history etc.

My Golf shed sits at just over 8p a mile for buying the car and any maintenance costs...
Surely that doesn't cover fuel?
Nope, just buying the car and servicing/fixing things.

No fuel, tax or insurance included on my spreadsheet!

Wow, I thought I was pretty anal, but that's good going on your spreadsheet biggrin

My Megane is pretty similar over the last 27 months and 27K miles.

Car = £1200
Servicing (eBay filters) = £100
Tyres = £208
Wipers and mats = £60
Insurance (3 X £200) = £600
Road Tax (3 X £30) = £90

£2258 / 27000 miles = 8.36p per mile

That's assuming the car is worth £0, but I think I could get £800 for it on eBay. That makes it £1458/27000 miles = 5.4p per mile.

It averages 60MPG so I am going to say Diesel is roughly 10p a mile.

Cars had the belt and water pump done today, now the fuel pump isn’t timed right and is struggling to start when it’s cold. Taking it back in tomorrow - bit annoying but hopefully gets fixed.

That sounds exactly like it is out of time.

The fuel? I was thinking it's too far advanced and needs adjusting back a bit.

Not worked on a 1.9 but a brief google shows that it is easy to wrong.

Think you can check with Vag Com to see exactly how far off it is.

The cambelt roulette thread got me thinking and I decided to bite the bullet, so it's been replaced next Wednesday.

£250 inc waterpump for either a Gates/Continental kit.

Given car cost £400, it's a lot of money but I'd rather spend that then causing an accident as it fails on motorway. It's not been changed since 2011 when it was on 90,000mls.
A wise move I reckon. Hope the timing can be sorted quickly and easily!

Thank you...

Guy has been to collect it, got it started and said the pump is too far advanced. He apologised - said it did it yesterday and they just presumed it was air in the fuel, but said they'll get it hooked back onto the computer, re-adjusted and bring it back later.

QUICK UPDATE

Car returned home just a bit ago, the fuel pump timing was slight retarded and has been re-adjusted now. Starts on the button again, so I'm happy and top marks to the guys for sorting it out so quickly. Top service.

Currently broken down!!!

Took car out for a bit of drive earlier, as I had to nip to shops and do a few jobs.

Came out of the junction, foot down and boost come in, but hit around 2k rpm and heard a pop. Instant zero power, pulled over and car sounds like exhaust is blowing. Nursed it home, opened bonnet up and found pipe hanging off near the intake at the bottom of the engine. Now I can't get the bloody thing back on.

I was due in Sheffield tomorrow, so looks like I'll have to take the non economical Kuga tomorrow!!

Car fixed.

Jubilee clip onto pipe has sorted that. Seems like garage hasn’t put enough coolant in also, explains the coolant light. Hopefully is not a problem with new water pump.

Coolant level will likely just need topping up as it settles.

If your close to Sheffield in future. Use Bellman autos. Chris is a absolute genius when it comes to vag cars.

The timing is easy enough to get wrong. See so many that have had the belt done and its not been set correctly on the cam. You can slacken the 3 bolts off on the cam pulley and make little adjustments. Recheck with vcds.

Thank you - yes I'm in Sheffield about 2 - 3 days a week at the moment until June/July time so I'll keep them in mind.

A great car, yours looks identical to Mrs H's one which has 250k or so miles on it. That's about as far as the moon. It needed a new clutch a few years ago, we replaced the dual mass original with a regular one to no ill effect, and a brake caliper needed changing. Both front window regulators broke at different times, but that seems not unusual for veedub parts. It didn't turn a hair when a quarter tank or so of unleaded was put in, I think it just cleaned out the engine. Not recommended, of course, but I kept it topped up with diesel and added a tiny drop of two-stroke oil for extra lubrication. You are doing very well to get 65 mpg, we got 55 on a run not long ago which ain't bad. Hmmm, it's coming up to oil and filter time again. They can swallow an extraordinary amount of stuff, and hardy people have been known to sleep in the back with the seats down. Happy motoring!
