I have orderd a non-chrome pack (code ZD6) radiator grille mask at a cost of less than £100. I'll have to get it painted Obsidian Black but that won't be too bad.
I can see the appeal in getting it painted, and the masking kit itself is impressively engineered(!) but I actually don't mind the modern grille too much actually. On the other hand, I absolutely share your views on the privacy glass on it which is, sadly, harder to fix.

Perhaps the solution is to pay someone down at the pub to put the windows through, then claim on the insurance?

I jest of course, but I do sympathise with the difficulty ahead. Great car though - proper off-roading with all the diff locks and low range.

Fabulous things. They really are a 4x4 w126.

What was the “extensive” work required by the dealer if it’s not cheeky to ask? Seems very great to require much.

I’m glad you’re not running away from diesels like so many people are now, and resisting the bling!

Well, to be honest, I'm not sure as I haven't collected the service history yet (the car comes from a family member). It has new discs and pads all round, new rear springs, some other suspension work and air bag sensor. £5k, I am told. It is driving very well and I am looking forward to getting it on new tyres, which arrive tomorrow.

I quite fancy a camo wrap but that wouldn't be cheap.

I do love all of your cars r129sl. This G is a bit of a surprise but if I had the means then I would have beaten you to it. However, my 190 is soaking up too many funds so I took several steps down and bought a Suzuki 😔

^^^I like these a lot. And for the avoidance of doubt, my G has been acquired on very favourable terms. A rich man I am not.

Love it!

Perfect for the battle to Jesmond every morning!
Oh how I miss that..........it's worth every penny I now pay for parking to not have to put up with the slog to school and the extra 15 minutes in my pit.

The g-wagen is a touch of class compared to the jelly mould SUVs churned out by the competition.
Hope the other cars in the stable don't get neglected because of the newcomer and you continue to enjoy them all.

Evening KS, always good to hear from you.

Jesmond is no longer on my itinerary, either. We moved the chaps to Mowden at Easter. My home-school-office commute has gone from 30 to 58 miles but takes less time. Because no Jesmond. Thank goodness. And an extra 15 minutes for me, too.

Cracking purchase!
I bought my G back in April this year, a 2006 G55. It's my daily and also took me on a holiday around Ireland this summer. They're wonderful bits of kit, I wish I had discovered them sooner! Now I'm waiting for the snow to come so I can have a play in the white stuff.

With regards to the grill, if you want to be really geeky you could get a Puch branded one.

It's surprising how much difference a change of grille can make - much less shouty.

There are a few Gs wearing a different style of grille where I am. One is a Puch, the others seems to have a double A symbol, I guess from the up-armouring company. They certainly looks less blingy than the modern MB equivalent.

This G somehow seems to break the hue of anachronism that suits you oh so well. In that vein, I think that it's a shame to de-bling it, as it's smart and original as is.

Having said that, the Puch grille looks very cool and esoteric...

I am interested in knowing how you go about acquiring the part numbers for clear glass, when your chassis number will only give you the part nos for the tinted glass as specified. I'd like to do the opposite, as the aftermarket film is awful on the rear screen. The suction on the heating elements fragments the light in the dark and is very off putting.

^^^To identify alternative part numbers, just do an EPC search by model rather than any chassis. You then get multiple variants of the same part, distinguished by option codes. In the EPC proper you can "filter" the search to show variants.

Driving home tonight there was a sudden power loss. Cruising at 95, it dropped back to 70 and wouldn't accelerate uphill. I suspect inlet port shut off motor or turbo wastage solenoid but I am going by Baister's tomorrow and will get a diagnosis if not a fix. Just my luck.

Very helpful, thanks r129sl.

It seems as though your G is in need of titivation... and so it begins. Ask him to swap back the clear indicators whilst in the garage wink
