I've replaced the doors and the bottled now and the replacement doors are not quite the right shade of silver. I have friend with a bodyshop who is going to fix this for me while sorting out the terrible previous repair it had to the NS rear quarter.

I also went and fitted a sports exhaust. It was £150 delivered brand new. Too cheap not to!

Total Spend: £1025

Thats looking great and sounds good as well.

I have a feeling prices may firm up a little for the earliest Minis, a chap I work with has a Checkmate Cooper S and I said to give me first refusal if he sells it.

I have got quite an urge for a Mini these days and/or an MX5, was looking at faster and faster stuff but am thinking would rather have something fun at lower speeds.

I think these Y-reg Minis are just really cool. Kudos you've got plates on with the pre 2001 font too, it looks 'just right' on this car.

Funnily enough in the Article you linked the dealer opening is the former Mini dealer on the Bath road in Reading. I've driven past that so many times it's silly. I remember when it opened. They've now moved to the single site with BMW near the Madjeski Stadium on the Basingstoke road.

You'll know that the 'BL' plates are reading ones from when BMW had their offices in Bracknell still. AN, and DP plates are the same too.

Looks great! What is the fasination with it being Y reg though?

This was my Cooper, paid £800 with 83k. Gave it a very cheap spruce up!

The Y reg cars were all press cars or dealer demonstrators as customer deliveries stated in August with 51 reg cars, there were some 600 cars registered on a Y.

All the Y reg cars have bits that are not on the mainstream cars. They have different front seats, MINI embossed in the pedal rubbers, different washer jets (requiring a different bonnet pressing), different front top mounts and drop links and probably some other bits.

All that aside for me it’s all about it being one of the first dealer demo cars. It’s kinda cool thinking that many people have bought one or more MINIs after their first experience of the revived brand was driving this very car.

You could have just said "Dont keep asking me Y reg, it just happens to be that year"

Missed opportunity.

That all sounds like a nightmare for spares should you need.

I might get myself another R50 (?) as a runabout/bit of fun. Have an R55 which is my wife's daily but post-lockdown I hope to only be in the office a couple of times a week so I'll drive and been thinking another Mini would be the way to go. Had an 04 Cooper a good few years back and have fond memories of that little thing...

Brilliant work!

As an AR-Online geek the whole Y-reg thing is quite anti-cool. I like it.

These are great cars and so cheap for spares I’ve had my Cooper now for a couple of years and bought my mint Sept 01 car for £350 with a years mot and 90000 on the clock back in Dec 2018.

Mine did have soggy carpets though which had been caused by a new windscreen being fitted previously but bought myself a sunroof drain tube just to be on the safe side.

In the time I’ve owned it the car has cost me an early type strut leg at £16 an Abs pump for £10 and a BCU at £15 plus servicing parts and fitted a set of Wipac spots.

I’ve also bought myself a set of 15 inch rocket alloys with tyres for £30 to put on it as I can’t handle the harsh ride of the larger wheels with runlats as it’s got the sports plus suspension so knocks my fillings out going over potholes.

This is ace. Top Mini geeking. Having noticed there are some tidy-looking pre-facelift Coopers around for £1,500ish I'm starting to think about sorting the garage to make room for one.

Just seen you linked this thread on the Mini 20th Birthday thread - any updates on the little thing? I'm still deliberating about getting another - do I go boggo standard Cooper, R53, boggo standard R56 or even open myself up to a whole world of pain with a dirt cheap R56 S...

Do it, well worth picking one up. Remember when we used to tut at them? Especially the dealer fresh delivery miles cars being entered in to concours competitions. You coming down for National Cooper Day at Beaulieu this year?

Been a bit of a financial rocky sea for me during the last 12 months due to redundancy etc so I've not done thing really. It was always going to be a rolling project. I'm hoping one day to get my mate to completely refresh the body with a lick of paint.

It’s currently off the road sadly. It’s throwing up and oil pressure warning and I’ve not got round to properly investigating it. Hoping to get on it in the morning and change the filter, oil and pressure switch.
