Rover off to its new home ...

IMG_0399 by srblythe, on Flickr

I bought a new camera to help with the videos and tried some stop motion stuff while replacing the wings on the 305 estate.

Upon removing the passenger wing I discovered some rust so cracked the welded out to make a repair.

The same thing I plan to do with all of my cars. Just drive it.

Out of curiosity - what was so hateful about the E46?
This particular example was used, abused and rusty. Previous owner had removed the cats and badly welded some pipes in which were incredibly loud and wouldn't have passed an mot. The interior was cream leather and absolutely filthy, the door handles were covered in oil and it was just generally unpleasant to be inside.
The sills under the plastic covers were rotten and the rocker cover was leaking oil onto the plugs making it misfire badly and run on 3 or 4 cylinders.

I imagine a looked after example would be quite a nice car to drive but this one needed far too much work to return to the road and I'm not into track days or drifting enough to warrant keeping it for that kinda use.
In the context of this thread, and the Chevette in particular... laugh

I really should get an award for dodgiest used car salesman of the year,  during lockdown I've managed to sell quite a few cars including cars that don't actually belong to me...

I sold this for £600

All of these cars were owned by other people and I didn't actually make any money from selling them...

These were mine..

and ended up chopping it up and probably only making £300 from the parts I sold off.

It's funny, people must be looking at my fire sale thinking I'm selling up because I'm skint but at this moment I think I have more in the bank than I've ever had and I'm still being paid in full from work...

I've just been enjoying having a clear out.

The Rover looks like a bargain against some of those!

My family had a string of Volvo 340s when I was a kid so I have a fondness for them and always lusted after a 360 GLT! boxedin

Where do you put them up for sale? I would have had a look at the MX5.

Great read, just done the thread in a oner.

That 305 van was indeed a Practical Classics staff car, I used to subscribe about ten fifteen years ago and remember it.

Thanks, I ended up owning a few different ex practical classics staff cars including a gold Senator and am Espace, much like the 305 van they were both total sheds.

A couple of new arrivals today, first up a 2.5 tdi Audi A6 on 230k, drives well and has the 6 speed box for ultimate fuel economy. It was covered in dog hair and mud in the back and had about 20 air fresheners stuffed into various places. We vacuumed the majority of the hair and chucked out the air fresheners and didn't seem to bad inside.

This thread is like a film that you should just turn off but morbid curiosity keeps you watching. Cant help but smile to myself though that you say the e46 was too far gone then put the amount of work that you are into the chevette that looks like you could kick through most of it. Much rather read about these though than yet another remapped m140i. The pic of you sat atop the building gives me sweaty hands just looking at it. Shame you didn't hold onto the 216gti, my dad had one, not the cleanest example but know that he liked it.

I never said the e46 was too far gone, I just said it was rusty and untidy inside, didn't run well and I had absolutely no desire to fix or own it. E46's are still common as muck so doesn't really interest me in trying to save one. If I wanted to own one I would go out and buy a well looked after one.
I like the chevette, I like the way it looks and drives and it doesn't owe me much money, if I wanted to go out and buy a decent example of a 2 door saloon it would probably cost a good few grand and it's not really something I justify spending that kinda money on.

The A6 looks okay. It's been to the moon, but the only thing that would worry me is the timing belt, assuming it's not a total rattler. Do you reckon it's been looked after?

I’d imagine it would give a fair few people a nasty shock driving

The OP mentions a few times where he buys and sells his cars...

I'm not sure if linking to external sites is allowed or not, but they're all the usual places.

It's says in the very first where I buy them from, it's also the same places I sell them.

Anyway, a small amount of progress has been made on the Chevette (for those not following the videos).
I got all of the welding and painting done on the front end and got the wings and front panel fitted.

I have new headlights and bumpers still to fit but there's not much point in doing so until it's painted. I haven't decided whether to keep it blue or respray it another colour like black. A darker colour might hide the shonky welding...
It still has a bit of welding to finish then needs a new engine, gearbox and steering rack and it will be a lot closer to an mot.

Chevette Progress.

Passenger door repaired, hole in sill repaired, inner and outer arch repaired.

Pics

Luckily the inner arch wasn't too rusty and only needed a small repair on the lip. Various off cuts from other panels were used to make the shape of the outer lip including a volvo 340 wheel arch and some sections of the old inner arch which was completely replaced on the other side.

Outer wheel arch fitted and weld ground flush, a small amount of filer required.
