And isn’t it constantly evolving? Ie a 3 star car now is like a 5 star car years ago.
Indeed. My Giulietta was a 5star in 2012 and 97% adult occupancy score but then the same model getting only 3stars and 77% score against her 2017 goalposts.I think cars are designed to do well in tests but when the tests change the results differ widely.
I noticed the Renault Captur does better so probably where the Dacia has been built to a price. Which is fine.
The planned Sandero update looks much better too.
I like them, unpretentious, capable, better built than most and well priced.
Piston heads ran one for a while and they seemed to like it:

I rented a diesel 4x4 one in Iceland a few years ago. It was brilliant.
It had around 150,000Km on the clock and, other than a slight audible clonk from an Arb/wishbone Bush, it all worked fine. Considering the life it must have led, off road on almost every rental, that is impressive.
It was surprisingly good on the dirt and gravel roads. It was good for wading rivers and climbing up the exit banks.
A sustained four-wheel drift, steering with the throttle, around a big, sweeping dust bend with a great, wide view of volcanoes was one of my all-time driving highlights.
The only thing that would annoy me with the 4x4 as a daily driver was the crawler first gear, as second was a bit too high to start off in.
I would have a basic 2wd Duster unless I needed a 4x4.

Well it has been a great Duster weekend.
The low fuel light came on after a bit so I topped it up to find the reserve was 7 liters.
She drives so nicely! A Mighty Dacia, as Hubnut would say.
I used it to move loads of Jag stuff about. It fits in a treat . One of the e types fell off the road recently and is being thoroughly disassembled and reassembled as we speak. I thought the braked trailer capacity was 1,500 kg on the 999cc model. I do want a tow-bar, as I move heavy bits about the place, this seems ideal for a little trailer.
I think a microcaravan would be fun. You could even sleep in the back of the Duster quite easily as it is pretty huge in the back.
I bought 2m of 1.2m wide 1mm ribbed rubber from out local agricultural hose suppliers, to line the rear and stop it getting grotty.
Then slung two bikes in the back for a ride - because I could!
Looking forward to piling on the miles over winter.
As far as safety goes, well I do ride a CB1000,. No seat belts or air bags on that one. Any car is better.
It seems pretty substantial to me, although there are better ones out there on NCAP. When your numbers up, your numbers up!

When I saw the title of this thread I thought it was a motorbike , I own a BMW S1000RR that is 999cc!
With that said your car is something I find deeply appealing. We have 3 dogs (including a 60kg Rottweiler) and after having cars destroyed by dogs, parking dings, tip runs and various other things I now keep a car for all that stuff (currently a Nissan Qashqai 1.5d).
Let us know how you get on with it, this maybe an option for me when my Qashqai gives up!

I took it on a trip today, a round journey of 150 miles, motorway and back roads.
Still impressed with how perky it feels, quite relaxed at speeds over 80mph.
Very dirty when I got back so gave her a clean.
Average fuel economy on the computer is showing 44.8mpg with my spirited right foot.
Loads of room in the back for 6ft2 grumpy teenagers.

I like the idea of one of these for the wife but am put off by the NCAP rating of 3* which I feel is pretty poor these days.
And if you read the report, it’s clear that the test results are not as good as something like a T-Roc and that the poorer results are not due to a lack of crash prediction features etc.
They’re still cute cars though and great value!
As someone a bit besotted by V8's, I must confess to being amazed at the performance of small car engines.
A friend has a 1.4 Audi convertible - at normal speeds it feels like it could be twice the capacity. Sporty, quiet and incredibly fuel efficient. I have an idea it even has cylinder shut down when cruising (I'm not sure on this).
So I am not at all surprised by your throbbing fun!
Oh, and low road tax too!

I downloaded a dB app for the phone to measure noise levels.
I haven't a clue how accurate it is. It measured 72dB at 80 mph near the handbrake. What does this mean?
Didn't seem too noisy to me. Lot quieter that the 911 thats for sure.
I think the main appeal of this car (apart from the fact I like it), is that when driving it, I dont feel like I am trying to show off, if you know what I mean.

These have been on the possible next car list for a while now, interesting to see it get such praise.
Tom Ford of Top Gear mag has done a thing with one and I think it's awesome

Hi
My first comment on here.
Great review 'polite person' and interesting continued discussion. The only thing I was surprised by is:
"A car that has over 20 cm of wheel articulation, in which you sit as high as a Range Rover driver."
Does it really sit as high as a RR? That's high. Most SUV's don't do that. Even expensive ones.
Cheers

For those questioning the safety of these, a good pal of min was hit at high speed in one by a slag in a stolen car which forced her off the road and to roll at least once. Her and her two kids were obviously shaken up but uninjured.
Interestingly the stolen BMW was covered in blood and a phone left but the occupants were never traced. A bit fishy in my opinion.

I don't blame you for buying the Dacia, I'm seeing quite a lot of them about, it's a car after all, like any other in this bland age.
A five year warranty is impressive and cheap servicing showing they have faith in their product.
Cheap to get in to but expensive to get out of, unlike my Volkswagen, plenty expensive to get in to and equally expensive to get out of and you feel like you're there for their pleasure at the cash register in the meantime. Enjoy it.
