I have almost sold my car but the buyer lives in Scotland. He will buy if I deliver and catch the train straight back home.

I hear car retailers can deliver cars but can I?

I can't afford a £10K fine!

It's not exactly an essential journey and I wouldn't risk it. Sorry, why can't the seller come to you? Probably because deep down they don't want the risk...

Up to you if you want to risk it, but things like this would worry me:

https://www.whatcar.com/news/private-car-sales-cou...

If you're worried about it, you can use a transport company to deliver the car for you. Dealers are able to do so, so if you use an approved and reliable company to deliver it for you I imagine it would be a bit more stress-free, though obviously it would be a few hundred quid cost. But you'd need to fill your tank anyway to drive it there, so, not "that" much more expensive really for the peace of mind.

If you're worried about it, better off erring on the side of caution. If he wants the car badly enough, he can arrange delivery - if you say you'll cooperate and make it easy to pick up and so on. If a condition of buying is making you take the risk of driving it yourself, I'd politely decline and wait for another buyer if I were you.

Is he going to pay you before you deliver? Otherwise you'll be in Scotland, the buyer will make some feeble excuse about his wife not liking it or the wrong shade of red and you've got to drive back at a loss to your time and fuel.

Top tip. I don't think the buyer wants it. He'd just have it collected if he did.

£10K fine? Are you planning to organise a party when you collect it?

I think the fine would be £200 if caught in England and £60 if in Scotland. Both halved if paid within 28 days.

Why would you get a £10k fine? Mind you, you sound like you deserve it.

Covid aside, I don't think I'd be agreeing to undertake an 800 mile round trip unless it was an agreed, signed and sealed deal... and even then, not sure I'd drive it myself as it just opens the floodgates for all manner of issues.

I think I'd be costing the trip... fuel, time plus return costs and the hassle then look at transport costs. I had quotes in the region of £300 to bring a car from Bristol up to Fife so it's not that bad.

If the seller agrees to buy, it's a done deal then agree a deal between you for the transport costs... split it 50/50 or something like that and save the hassle, risk and reduce the chance for tyre kicking and teeth sucking once it arrives at his door.

If he's not willing to meet you half way cost wise, ask yourself how keen he is to buy the car.... if he wants it, I'm sure he'd be happy to discuss and reach an mutually agreeable arrangement to get it shipped up.

Plus, removes the chance of breakdowns en route or something going wrong...

Have it delivered, get him to pay the cost and get him to pay for the car in full before booking the transport company.
Even in non-covid times I can't see why anyone would drive 400 miles to deliver a car they're selling.

As said, he won’t buy it and you will feel a right prune.
Just don’t waste your time and energy OP. Wait for a more local buyer that will come to you.

Buy yourself a belt because you’re about to get your pants pulled down.

it clearly isn't when the cr could be transported by a company, which is legal.

I had a bloke, he enquired about my car. Then heard nothing. A few days later got a phone call and told me he had driven from Scotland, looked at 3 cars but they were st, but if I drove it to him, 100 miles away he would ''guarentee'' to buy it.. You can guess what I did.

You drove an extra 300 miles and missed the sale?
