I've been doing the Boxster chop today and all seems well for now

Hhhhhiiiiiii-yyyyyyaaaaaaaaaahhhhhhh

That's my attempt at a Bruce Lee type chop noise. Brilliant I know.

Yes it was a bit chilly so got my Antarctica coat on.

he bad news is I still don't really fit in the car. So every time I drive it I find myself thinking the same thing. The 987 seats are definitely an improvement over 986 but my knees are always hitting the wheel.

Maybe I need to invest some energy into trying different seats. I could try the Pole Position out of my other car and see if that makes it better.
Have you thought about another steering wheel? I've just put a Momo Mod07 in mine and while it's not much smaller there is a tiny bit more clearance. You can also get offset spacers which I believe are meant to stop the rim from obscuring the instruments, so I guess must raise the wheel further ..?

Yeah I keep meaning to ty this. I have a Momo type 7 in one of my 996 - not sure if genuine. I could swap it over easily enough. I also have a concentric spacer I removed too. I'm not sure it is for the view of the instruments primarily, it just raises the wheel off centre by about 10mm and brings it forward by about 10mm also. The overall reach can then be adjusted back by the main adjuster on the steering column but the indicators still feel quite far away when you're trying to reach them with your finger tips.

My main grip with the car is my legs. They are still reasonably high off the seat cushion so I am just sitting on my hips. I can put up with it for pottering round and going to the shops and what not. But for longer trips I start to think err no thanks. The 996 is night and day from a seating perspective. If the seating position was right in the Boxster I'd have no grumbles ... well they grumbles I have would be much less serious. I'm being picky I know.

So it has ben nearly a year since I bought this and I finally organised a visit to the seller to collect the original back box.  Now I just need to refit it.

Was the other red 986 deliberately aged or had they only polished the 1 wing?

I have no idea but it did make mine look very tidy by comparison.

I'm conflicted by this. Yours looks great and I love to see new looking shiny 986/7 around. However, as 356/911 etc got older I thought they looked fantastic with patina. Not rusty, but dulled, faded paint, perhaps a ding or two. So why not a 986, they are ageing nicely. I'm starting to think a faded, scruffy 986 with gaffer tape on the roof and a worn interior but with perfect suspension and mechanicals might just be a lovely thing to own.

When I bought this I had a tatty and tired looking 996. A bit like you described. It was a great car to just drive around in and not worry too much about. But after a year or two I had started thinking about sprucing it up. I started thinking the car deserved better. I still have it but it doesn't get used. I guess the point is having a beater Porsche is cool for a while but then the novelty wears off. Maybe I'll come back to it or maybe I won't, who knows.

The tatty red Boxster I parked next to certainly looked cool. Maybe that's just to me. I thought they both looked cool together. I'm trying not to become too precious about the little red Boxster. It's not been cleaned since I bought it and that's around a year. So I'm doing OK for now.

I don't want to become a bore who worries about mileage and stuff like that but it's difficult because those thoughts are always there at the back of your mind. My plan was to always buy one and then drive it like any other car. I'm trying to stick to that.

Great thread and throwing up some food for thought in my decision for a 986 vs 987 re seating position.

The seating position being one thing but the pedals are also positioned much more nicely in the 987. I might be wrong but it strikes me that that they found some extra room forwards and downwards in the 987?

First post here btw wavey

So the boomy eBay special back box is off and the original exhaust is back on. Just finished doing the job. Took me about 3 or 4 hours I'd say. I left the bumper on the car and it was OK once I had the car high enough off the ground.
