I’ll have to keep my eyes peeled for you heading to the Isle of Man presuming you’re going from heysham ( I work next door to the port) excellent to see the car being used as intended! I would still love one of these at some point in the future

Id presumed the same but the Liverpool ferry's have started up again (I think they stop over winter) . Heysham ferry was cheaper but further away and the times didn't suit me.

Spent the weekend doing what the card does best. Burning a tonne of fuel and putting a smile on my face.

Spent most of Sunday on one of my favorite roads ,this is Rivington road that links Belmont and Rivington. Its not a long road but its windy and technical and a whole lot of fun. Its also on my doorstep so is get for a quick trip out.

This weekend also had me thinking about just how good of a car the 911 is. Iv been using it loads for work and it happily sits on the motorway for 5 hours at a time, but then put the car and the suspension in sports mode, drive it like you stole it and its like a completely different car. I do really doubt I will be selling this car to fund a big chunk of a house deposit next year. This was the original idea but I think I would just miss the car way too much, plus what would I replace it with?

I had to get the second picture as there is a blue dot of a car behind mine . The blue dot is an R32 golf - one of my favorite cars ever made. Especially when you put a twin turbo kit on them and they make 500 bhp +

On my way home I spotted what I thought was a Ferrari in a pub car park, i pulled over to have a look and it turned out to be a new lotus Emira .
Its the first one i'v ever seen and I have to say it looked amazing, especially in the dark green colour .
Kind of like a mini Ferrari 488.

Isle of Man Weekend Trip - Petrolhead Paradise

Now lets start with saying - if you haven't brought a car across to the Isle of Man - you need to!

The trip started off in Liverpool to board the ferry - right next to the liver building

(red exclamation mark on dash is for the front left side light being out)

Car only just got on to the ferry (was hit and miss if the front splitter was coming with me or staying in Liverpool)

The ferry was rather pleasant - even had rooms with films playing which was nice to pass the time.

Ferry terminal is right on the prom at Douglas, convenient as I was staying with a friend who lives ight on the front of the prom. Parked up next to a FN2 Type R which looked like it had been dumped there. Shame really, was in an unusual brown colour aswell.

I cant complain about the views from the flat I was staying in either

Agenda for the weekend was wake up early, drive some good roads and eat some good food. Seemed like a good plan to me

Both Mornings I was out early to drive the TT course which was fantastic. Especially when the national speed limit sign means there is no speed limit, was nice to be able to properly stretch the legs on the car .

Im just going to spam the next section of this with various pictures from across the island.

The Isle of Man motor museum was fantastic - worth a visit if anyone is over there .

I had also times the trip well as the mountain roads are closed from the day after I left for maintenance ready for the TT.

After having such a great weekend I'm half tempted to go back over for the TT - I bet the atmosphere round the entire island would be fantastic.

Most importantly, the car was pushed to its limits around the island and was faultless, gives me confidence for my Nurburgring trip in just over 4 weeks time.

Opened the drivers door today and realized the window didn't drop slightly when the door handle was used. Went to put the window down and was met with lots of grinding sounds and no movement of the window - fantastic!
Upon investigation it appears the cable that runs through the regulator/motor has snapped so new regulator needed. Seems a s simple but fiddly job.

New window regulator picked up - not too bad at £95. Install was simple enough, however very fiddly especially lining the window up in the correct position.

Whilst the door panel was off i took the opportunity to add sound proof matting to the doors and it had me thinking about a speaker upgrade.

I ended up going with these as they were highly recommended amongst 997 owners.

The large 8" speakers are at the bottom of the door and the smaller 4" speakers sit above them. The set also came with new tweeters for the dash.

I will upgrade the 2 rear speakers if I'm happy with the speakers in the front doors.

Sound quality has greatly improved, however there is still room for improvement. Its lacking a subwoofer and a decent amp would definitely liven up the speakers. I shall add a sub and an amp to my to do list but that's a job for another month.

Nürburgring Trip

Well, what can I say. 4 countries, 1300 miles all in 3 days. The best 3 days of my life

For many years I'd wanted to have a driving trip to the Nürburgring. For me it was like a life long dream that I knew I had to do at one point, and that point was last weekend.

The trip started in Kent where everyone met up ready to get the ferry from Dover the next morning.

Boarded the ferry and set sail across to Calais

After we departed the ferry we made good progress through France to head to Belgium

The drive through France was rather boring and only stopped off in France for fuel

Next up was Belgium - realized too late just how many speed cameras there is in Belgium (lets see if a ban or fines come through the post - hopefully due to Brexit there will be neither)

After Belgium was Germany - we went through a few national parks and the roads were fantastic with beautiful scenery all round . Id never realized just how scenic the area around the Nürburgring was.

After these roads we arrived at Heaven - the Nürburgring

The night was spent at the hotel that overlooked the racetrack - it's safe to say there was a rather prominent car theme

The car park was under the hotel - it was a sea of Ferraris, Porsches and Lambos. I parked next to an SLS AMG and I then realized it had been stripped out inside and was being used just as a track car.

It got to about midnight and we learnt there was a derestricted Autobahn about 20 minute drive away. It was a no brainer really, so 20 minutes later I found myself about to merge into an autobahn for the first time and see what speed I could get up to. First run was to scope it out, I found it very odd that there was no street lighting - you couldn't see that far ahead and it felt like you was going quicker than your lights reached.

After a few runs i got to a number I was happy with

The car probably had a few more mph before hitting the limiter in 6th but I could see a car in the distance and didn't want to endanger anyone else so I called it a day at 180mph.

I was surprised at just how quickly the car got there - it was still accelerating similar at 160 as it was at 100, rather impressive really.

It was then time to get some sleep before driving round the Nürburgring the next morning.

The morning came and it was time to drive round the famous track. The car park around the track was a thing of amazement within itself. Every where you looked was supercars and every other cool car you could think off.

I didn't push the car hard at all. Iv never done a trackday so I went round it to say iv been round it- that was all. To be honest it was terrifying, there is cars worth 200k flying past you about 2cm off your bumper. I was glad when the lap was over. I went back to the viewing point and the track got closed due to a car flipping and landing on its roof. It made it hit home that it was a dangerous track and made me glad I took it easy. There was various crashes throughout the morning, this one was especially painful to see:

Once the morning was over it was time to head back to Belgium, to spend a night in Brussels

After a night in Brussels it was time to head back to Calais to come back to the UK, a rather sad day really as it marked the end to this amazing trip.

As an overall trip I'd say it was the best few days of my life and any petrol head needs to go. It will 100 percent not be my last time going to the ring. IM also really impressed with the car. A 16 year old, 110k mile car that I have took apart many times drove 1300 miles, hit 180mph, went round a racetrack and then returned home with no issues.

Good to see you're a local lad biggrin ( I'm Preston); know that road well and it's a cracking drive...

Bloody good sledging up there too when it's snowed properly...

Spent many a winter up there when I was younger (mid 80s into early 90s) going hell for leather on a dangerous sledge laugh

I don't bounce any more so daren't do it again haha

Superb car too and some great pictures fro IoM cool

One thing I did notice during the trip was a whining noise coming from the engine bay. It started a few day before the trip but got worse and worse over the trip, luckily nothing broke but now I'm home its time to sort it.
The whine is linked with engine rpm so I'm thinking its drivebelt related - either an ancillary on it or the tensioners/rollers.
Once I removed the belt the whine had gone so it's definitely something driven from the drivebelt.
The drivebelt is easy to access, once the airbox is off you have a massive space to work with

Nothing feels to have much play in it but the tensioner and the 2 rollers next to it are a bit noisy when they spin and appear to have a few small cracks in them.
So first things first is to replace them and the drivebelt ands see of the noise is still present. If it doesn't then I have a feeling its the ac compressor, however the noise doesnt change when the ac is on or off which suggests it isn't the ac compressor . No harm in new pulleys and tensioners anyway as they appear to be the original ones, and the drivebelt is from 2015 so that was slightly overdue anyway.

Alternators are a common cause of whining. The bearings die on them.

That was my first thought but the pulley seems really smooth and no noise at all coming from it

New Tensioner, rollers and drive belt on and noise still present. Old tensioner and rollers were aged so no harm in having replaced them.

Noise is slightly less but its now evident that its the power steering pump. Fluid level is fine so its definitely the pump.

Ones been ordered and arrives later this week so that gives me a Job for the weekend

Nice car you are definitely using it properly! IOM trip looks good I would like to go. Same with the ring, me and some mates have discussed it we going to go next year.

Seeing the gt3 smashed up you were over the same time as some of my mates. A mate was in a blue gt3 and he was on track when a bad accident happened it shook him up.

Was a real shame about the GT3, was chatting to him the night before it happened. He leant the car to his brother for a lap of the track and thats how it ended up being crashed, a real shame as the car was stunning in person.

Thanks for the compliment about the car - I dont get why people are scared of using these cars for what they were made for. I drive it, it breaks, I fix it and the cycle continues, its rather simple really smile

Refurbed power steering pump arrived today

Seems a fiddly job to swap out but we shall see - not much information online either so should be a bit of a challenge.

Well, after 3 days of battling removing the old power steering pump I ended up breaking the power steering return line. I did buy a special tool from porsche made for undoing the line but it was well and truly stuck.
Also managed to damage the AOS (Air Oil Seperator) aswell. Granted the power steering pump needs to be out the way to change these and they are a common fault on 997.1s so I'm glad its being changed anyway.

Plus now all that is out i'm left thinking do i change the starter motor whilst access is so easy to it at the moment - ill price it up and have a see.

So at the moment I'm left with a still broken car - but with parts arriving soon to hopefully make it a working car ready in time for the weekend - we will see.

Picture shows airbox, intake plenum, throttle body, power steering pump, power steering reservoir, AOS and return line removed. Aswell as AC pump moved out the way - but still all plumbed in. This has turned into a an expensive week smile. Reiterates the fact that these cars need a separate pot of money set aside as repairs can get costly rather quickly
