The reason I ask is that that bracing looks like it could be turned into some nasty spikes in a frontal impact if they don't deform.

there is a picture frame and a witches hat / triangle part that the bonnet hinges on missing in that picture.
They deform very well in an accident, frontal or side.
Overall, 4 years, although 2 of them were waiting for the aluminium shell, plus a few months whilst Pilkington sorted out making the front screen properly. During that time I stripped the 62 EType and overhauled all the necessary bits. Once shell received in paint it took about 15 months to screw it together.
