I’ve always thought these were good looking cars, not much wrong with velour, old school but comfy.

Brilliant cars, used to drive one as a part time mini cab driver 20 odd years ago. Had 300k on it and didn’t miss a beat. Only issues was the sponge had come loose from the steering wheel ce the so used to twist all over the place.

Ended up buying a 99/T 1.8LS shortly after as a daily - super comfortable but turned out to be a bit of an odd spec.

Just ticked over 150k, which I daresay means it's barely run in.

Offside front wing has a bubbling patch under the paint, reluctant to pick at it just in case - par for the course with a 20+ year old daily snotter. Otherwise a splendid, but sluggish, way to smoke about.

I'm coming to find XUD clatter to be rather comforting. Not sure the neighbours agree!

Unfortunately a common thing on these at this age, the lacquers don't seem to be adhered to the base colours well enough - early water based lacquer issues.

My red coupe has the lacquer peeling everywhere from it, started with the bubbles and then sheeted off over winter.

That's a good looking £2k car, producing serious flashbacks to my S-reg blue 406 V6. That was the "sensible" family saloon after the Golf VR6 and whilst lacking the same whoomy engine note, covered 60k miles very comfortably.

Makes me wonder why I haven't had more comfy French cars. And the current 508's not a bad looking thing...

Nice. - what oil are you using? I'm not too familiar with the XUD per se but a lot of diesel engines prefer a certain AwBB oil once 'over the hill' to keep things quiet. Perhaps 10W40 or even a 20? Any info on the Peugeot forums?

The way these soaked up the bumps yet steered keenly round the twisties is a Peugeot masterclass in suspension dynamics. Fabulous cars

I think I'll be going the 10W40 route, and adopting the "more frequent changes with cheaper oil is better than fewer changes with premium stuff" approach. To be fair it's not making any noises it shouldn't, and is not at crazy miles so has plenty of life left, just reassuringly agricultural as is an old diesel's wont.

I completely rebuild the suspension on mine the other month and the way it rides now makes the E-class it's parked with look stupid. Stuff I have to slow down for and grit my teeth in the Merc even with it's air suspension I don't even notice in the 406.

Well. That didn't last long - driving home home from work Friday afternoon, woman didn't stop at a junction and ploughed her Yaris into my side.

As much as I loved the Pug, it has been a long few years and the hassle of fighting to get it repaired just wasn't something I was able to face, and nor did I particularly want to have it hanging around waiting for someone else who might want to save it.

Moved onto a Mk IV Mondeo now. Not really interesting enough for a thread of its own, though it's plenty pleasant (bloody huge though).

That's sad news OP. frown

Shame you couldn't save it though - I'd have been tempted to try to keep it running!

Yes it's definitely a shame, it was a very good car - I just haven't the mechanical inclination, space, or the money to try and get it back to life. They always say these things happen at the worst times...and this really did. Just needed another car I could use to get back and forth work ASAP, so that's what the money went towards.

I still hold out hope someone might spot it at the scrappy before it's inevitably "recycled" and see its potential.

Thats a shame, had my pug shed written off with a woman pulling out of a side road straight into me. Was absolutely gutted.

I like a Mk4 tho....and as its a ford always plenty to do....

That is unlucky. I hope you got a decent valuation on the payout given it was strong money to start with.

Sorry to see this survivor lost to ignorance of another human. Hope you are all ok and perhaps if you let 406 owners know the immaculate bits that were on it might be of use to others.
