I simply put the following into Autotrader:
Coupe
RWD
Min engine size of 3 litres
Min 2 seats, Max 4
0-60 < 5 secs
Min 300 bhp
Min £20k, max £25k
330 cars came up.
Of course, not all of them will be considered competitors to a 911 but if you are looking for a fun weekend car at that budget then there's a lot of choice from Aston Martins and BMW M series cars to Jaguar F types to Maseratis etc etc.
Broaden the criteria a bit and you bring in things like Lotus and Audi RS’s into the mix.
By modern standards a 996 is not quick. It's difficult to compare a Porsche to most of the standard car brands but from what you mentioned I'd exclude maybe Maserati, Aston and Lotus - not sure if this should also say except the Jaaaag. The on paper numbers are a bit meaningless but it's worth mentioning a story I remember from 2005 when I owned a 997 c2s. Top Gear did a test with the Stig driving along a section of road on the Isle of man. They compared the 997 - same as mine - to an M6 and the baby aston which was quite new at the time. Both had more power and better 0-60 times than the 997. The m6 has 500bhp obviously - and also obviously I'd love to have a nice one but I've never driven one. Anyway the 997 was a full 6 seconds quicker along this stretch of road than the other 2. That's a big difference. There are some clips on YouTube but last time I looked I got lost clicking around and couldn't find it. I remember it well because I'd not had my 997 long and my mates were all texting me saying which one would win. No one guessed the 997 with way less power. So yeah I know it's the Stig and he is a great driver and us mere mortals cant get close etc etc etc. If you're not a Porsche nerd then maybe you won't see the value. You're probably better off not getting involved too. It's a slippery slope. But don't forget the original and much unloved Boxster. It's still a great car. And you'll struggle to spend more than 10 grand on one unless you buy a really really nice one. But on paper they are more like 6 secs to 60 so not that quick. But still great fun and great cars.Coupe

This is the only clip I can find and it's ruined with stupid music.julian987R said:
Could be, but just shy of £5k for an early 986 with a Cat n marker feels toppy, no matter what the service history or story behind it is. It could make a great car to hold on to, but you'll struggle to sell it once you're done with it. EML could be any one of a dozen things but it's a bit surprising that he's changed parts without reading the codes to find out what's wrong.
£2k as a bit of a punt - yes. £5k .... I'd be looking elsewhere (or haggling my face off to get it down to £2k!)
From the seller "The other issue is the EML light comes on at various times. The car has had new spark plugs, coil packs x 6, new MAF sensor and a new camshaft sensor but still not getting to the bottom of it. If you know about these cars maybe you have another idea but sadly I can’t spend anymore money on it."
It is a good demonstration, how much of a money pit these cars COULD be, even though you get one with good service history and re-conditioned engine!

Thank you.This wasn't advertised anywhere.
I put a post out on one of the forums looking for a facelift Boxster S and a lovely gentlemen replied and a few weeks later after some work here it is.
It seems to be a good one fingers crossed.

My mistake - it looks exactly like my Ocean blue in that picture. Apart from my paint is much much worse!
No worries, it did look blue ish in the photo due to the car park lights. Will get some proper pics at the weekend and a wee write up about it.
Loving it so far. Well, apart from the noise. It's just too quiet!

Picked this up on Thursday after spotting it on FB marketplace. Fancied another Boxster, always heard good things about the 2.5’s, miss having a convertible for summer, and be nice to have something that I’m not quite as precious over as the 911.
Cracked coolant tank leaking into the boot, roof not working, old/crap tyres, no MOT or history, only one key.
LOTS of little niggles that need sorting but…..engine sounded very sweet, gearbox is good and there’s something very cool about a very early 2.5 Boxster. No AC, cloth seats, 16 inch wheels. Proper poverty spec (and all the lighter for it).
Changed the coolant tank yesterday (awful job) and she’s feeling mega after a run around the block.
Paid £2400. I can’t go wrong for a summer toy, surely?! I’ll sort a proper readers cars post soon
If anyone's interested I just started a Readers Cars thread to document getting this old thing sorted. Spoiler alert: It now has a clean MOT, is great to drive, and still owes me way less than £3k Cracked coolant tank leaking into the boot, roof not working, old/crap tyres, no MOT or history, only one key.
