I initially clicked on this advert as it was a colour I've not seen before. I read the service history on the advert and it's eye watering. I personally think listing all the costs for work done on the advert is a bad move, it's enough to scare you off owning a Porsche altogether. Who can justify bills like these on a 5k car?

Some of those prices are seriously steep for an indie. They're more like OPC prices.

Looks like a good car though with everything that's been replaced.

Thought it was fitting that I joined this thread as I have just picked up my second ever bit of poverty Pork (the first being a 944 about 15 years ago, bought for £1800). It is a 2003 Boxster S with 160k miles for which I paid £2000. The car belonged to a friend who has had it for ten years. It is in good shape mechanically but does not seem to have been cleaned during his ownership.

At this price there are a couple of downsides:

i) AC does not work (I think, haven't really tried it)

ii) After running for about 20 miles it starts to run like sh*t, resetting engine error codes fixes this for the next 20 miles. A quick scan yesterday shows the bank 1 lambda sensors are behaving very strangely but this may be a symptom rather than the cause.

iii) Between my buying the car and collecting it it has been left with the windows not quite closed (doors open, battery removed, doors closed windows slightly down. The interior of the car is very damp, luckily mainly the driver's side so hopefully the computers under the passenger seat are not wet. Next step is to dry it out over the next week.

When I get some time I will swap the lambdas between banks and see if the problem persists.

Ben

Outrageous! The car is an absolute beauty, and a real credit to its previous custodian.

hehe

It's easy for these to get tatty quickly if they live outside and/or are not driven regularly and properly maintained. Battery goes, window drop doesn't work, then insufficient weather seal = potential leaks / dampness. Also, never lock it and leave it not plugged into a trickle charger, as the only way to get at the battery when the electronics play up is via a cable that will only be accessible on a lift or after removing the OSF wheel. Ask me how I know.

Brilliant, brilliant cars though. Easily a very usable daily but with enough love and knowledge invested in the important parts - handling, ride, musical and rewarding engine, sweet primary controls. It's all been said a thousand times but provide you're willing to invest the time and effort (and money) run them properly and you don't expect remapped Golf R levels of go, it is the bargain sports car of all time in my view.

I am seriously debating keeping mine and may yet have another - I can't think of anything I want that isn't at least 3-4 times the price or more, and none of them would be objectively better as a package...

Similar issue here, I really need 4 seats but as my 987 was such a bargain (£4.5k) I can't find anything that is as up to date and as much fun for less than 4 times the price.

What did your £4.5k get in the 987 world? That must be the cheapest one ever sold?

996 is on the list but unfortunately impossible for the time being due to fiscal constraints imposed by other things. Rest assured I am working on this wink

Good news: 987, silver, black leather
Not so good news: 129k miles, no service history, tiptronic

Got from a trader friend who had it as a part ex.

That is still a bargain but I can't imagine taking one of these for a blast as a tiptronic. Especially when the pedal positioning in the manual is so good for heel and toe, even for a rank amateur like myself.

OT - how are the things going with your 986. I recall you were in a legal battle with the stealer. I understand if you don't want to go into too much detail on here.

Mine lives outside. Left it parked up for three weeks over Christmas when I went abroad. No trickle charger. It's a pain, but both cars (just) fit on the drive if you try - presumptively, I did get the jumper cables out of the garage and left them in my Polo as there was now no way to open the garage door.

Came back - it started on the button first time. Brakes seemed a little seized, but freed up on a short blast to clear out the cobwebs. Racked up 500 odd miles in the last ten days despite the weather. Boy have I missed driving it.

On another note, where is 'empty' on the fuel gauge (not that I intend on playing fuel light bingo)? There are five marks on the gauge (with the needle being on the fifth in the pic) and the bar at the bottom that lights up. Is it the fifth mark, the top of the bar or the bottom of the bar or none of the above? I took this yesterday before refueling.

It took just under 55 litres. According to Carfolio, capacity is 64 litres?

The light comes on very early on these cars, with Germanic cautiousness. On the 3x 987s and 997s I have owned it comes on with a range of 65 miles remaining. On the 986 the needle moves through the entire illuminated section, enough for at least 40-50 miles or 2 gallons as you seem to say in your post

As a point of trivia on the 997 cars with 4wd (and maybe the 996 too?) the fuel tank is a highly irregular shape to make space for the differential. The fuel level sender only works for the top half of the tank and once this is used up the car’s range on the computer is completely estimated based on driving style and calculated estimated consumption. This means that if you fill up when it is low, to less than half a tank, and drive off, the computer doesn’t recognise the added fuel and give you any more range. It is very uncomfortable driving it like this with the light on even when you know you just fueled it.

Thanks for the replies guys, not a fan of letting it get that low. The gauges on these things are weird, probably due to the shape of the tank (but not as bad as 4wd Pork as Jake alluded too). It appears to use a quarter of a tank in 30 - 40 miles and then the needle slows down. It then speeds up after about 5/8ths of the tank. The light comes on about half way between 1/4 and 0 on the gauge. This was roughly 10 miles into 35 miles commute. It got to 0 at the fuel station a couple of miles from my home.

Somewhat disconcerting that it seems to go down so quickly, hence me popping the question. The computer did however allude to there being another 30 miles to go - just didn't trust it. Although in all fairness, the computer does appear to give a good estimate of range that varies with the way you drive, although the MPG is somewhat 10% optimistic.

Same for 996, too.

On my 996 C4 you can't rely on the predicted range in the bottom half of the tank - more specifically, I wack 10 mnles off of whatever is reported and the -- you get at 9 miles and below is taken as actual fumes. Caught me out before when I got stuck in a traffic jam.

I’m no Troy Queef so the tip isn’t a massive issue to me. Makes it relaxing in traffic and it never feels like it’s in the wrong gear when having a blast. I would probably never have chosen a tip if starting afresh as they clearly aren’t popular, but then again it helps to bring the price down.
