How likely is a 3.2S to land me with a bill that makes its £5k purchase price irrelevant?

Has anyone dealth with Houghton Cars before?

I'm after another 986 for the £5k mark and this has caught my eye:
http://houghtoncars.co.uk/?vehicle=porsche-boxster...
You can get a 3.2S for that money, which I chose over the 2.5 & 2.7 as the insurance was CHEAPER by about £200 - I'm with Elephant and live in west London, go figure.

Just use the governments MOT history checker on every number plate before you view, some make for horror novel levels of reading
Been through the whole buy a 'cheap' (sic) 986 and spend a heap of cash getting it up to scratch. Trying to be risk averse this time round!

Not many Cayennes on here, but you can pick up a bargain or two now, I paid just under £5k for my 3.2 and had no dramas so far.
I got told to avoid the S at all costs as apparently it has an engine which likes to self destruct, so either go for the 3.2 or the Turbo, the difference in purchase price at this level between a 3.2 and a Turbo and I only do about 6k miles a year, I thought sod it and went for the Turbo- 110k Miles FSH by Porsche then specialists, had the coolant pipes, cardan shaft, air suspension all done and it drives so much better than any other 4x4 of the era I’ve driven, only slight negative is its prodigious thirst for unleaded, first day I was a bit lead footed and 10 MPG, now I’ve started driving it a bit more normally I’m up to 15-16 MPG, but I knew what to expect biggrin .
Mine is a 55 plated V8S. Had pipes and screenshot done. Had it 15 months now. Averaged just over 19MPG in that time. I run Comma Motorsport 5W/50 which hopefully protect the engine. Mine is now on 102k.
Well my 3.2 does an impressive 20mpg hehe it's on 118k.

I looked at some v8's, but not a turbo as the extra pace didn't really interest me in all honesty, it would only mean I got back from the tip sooner wink

Do you mean “grim” as in appearance? Or is there something else about it you don’t like? Just interested as I’m looking at present.

Distasteful lights and wheels, no rear badge, no wind deflector. No mention of any of the usual problem areas being attended to (although, depending on what his 'loads of invoices and receipts' means, it could be hidden in there).

Has my Spidey Senses tingling too now I'm in the market again. On my 'ones to avoid' list. One may get lucky though...

The lights deserve the bin. The interior needs some love.

What's to your pain threshold? I'm on 2x 986 and about 6.5 years ownership and you can comfortably spend the purchase price again if you want to, and I have 😂

I have absolutely no interest in doing that.

I'll happily spend money on something which is an investment but I couldn't be putting that amount of money into a Boxster which isn't going to pay me back.

It's an old car. If you want to get away with the least possible spend then a car from an enthusiast with a no regard for their wallet and who is preventative maintenance minded so changes things before they break, is the kind of car like mine you need 😁

Quite honestly if you just want one to drive and don't care if it clonks or handles mediocre for what it can be then you could get away with £5k and not spend too much more. Be prepared for a clutch to go, rad to burst, AC not to work, expansion tank to crack etc.

It's not a question of avoiding spend. It's the net cost of ownership.

I spent sub £4k buying a 2.7, ploughed a further £6k into it over 18 months getting it up to scratch and then it got written off in the Peak District.

The risk would have been similar regardless of the engine size in my own car - the engine itself was a peach.

If the aim is the least net cost then a reasonable 986 is the way to go. You could get a just out of warranty 987.2 for 4 times the price which will still depreciate and as it ages needs parts replacing. Depreciation on a 986 is almost non existent.
