Yeah they do look so much better without the front plate. I relocated mine further down and got the bodyshop to smooth and repaint

Can you confirm how wide your garage is?

Wiki states the 986 is 1781mm wide, I've done the man maths, now just doing some man measurements wink

The gap is 2300
Inside is 3400 x 6300

Loads of room.

What do we think? The chaps undertaken the work himself but confident in his own ability. Tempted!

Seems a chunky price for a car that's done 200k.

My garage isn't as wide as that chaps (sadly!). So I leave the window down on my 996 as it makes it easier to get in and out of in the garage. It also makes life easier if the battery goes flat through lack of use redface

I wouldn't go near an M96 with an IMS bearing replacement, let alone one done DIY unless it was part of a full rebuild.

The forces involved in removing the old bearing, then fitting the new bearing are not trivial.

Think about what is at the other end of the IMS shaft that you are pressing on - possibly hammering it in!!! Its impossible to adequately support the shaft without removing it entirely.

Then you have to consider did it go in perfectly straight?

A large number of specialists will refuse to do this - the most famous being Hartech noted M96 experts.

Why was it replaced (only need replacement if it has failed / has play in it evident when you remove the flywheel to inspect)?
What bearing was used (are you sure it is equivalent to OE bearing - roller or ceramic types are not suitable despite the marketing)?

I'd walk away.

Couple of nicely specced early 2.5s I've spotted up for sale at a dealer, both for 5 grand:

https://www.carandclassic.co.uk/car/C1079644

Special order colour with full M030 and Diff, Extended leather.

https://www.carandclassic.co.uk/car/C1079646

Bit more sporty/racy looking in the best colour, factory full Aerokit also with Extended leather and smart looking (if not great for the drive) GT3 wheels.

Neither will be a rocketship in a straight line, but both have sensible miles and look great, minimal running costs/bork being nice early models. Quite simple cars really. I can think of many, many worse cars to spend £5k on ahead the spring and summer.

Both look very nice.

The black one looks like it's been off the road quite a bit in recent years, MOT expires in a month too.

Glad to see early 2.5s creeping up in price! Got mine out of hibernation last weekend for a battery charge so will tax it from March. Mine is an early 1998 in guards red, with just shy of 80k miles.

As for the garage question mine is in a standard width garage, it is a bit tight as I have pillars mid way down the sides so I have to get out and push it the final foot or so in but it goes in!

Next jobs for mine is a full service and probably a wheel refurb of the original wheels assuming I keep it!

That's good, I've never measured mine but here it is with a mini cooper in situ for scale.

According to Google the 986 is only 91mm wider and 713mm longer than the Mini so it looks like it will go in ok.

Back in the market for my first go at some poverty Pork!

Looking at the 2.5 Boxsters again. If anyone seens any interesting ones on sale on any non-usual places please do let me know. I keep an eye out on AT, eBay, Boxa.net as well as Carandclassic.

Those two just above look good, although being in Scotland are too far. Don't want a dark one and the red (fave colur) has the "aero" kit which I find horrible.

I find the front bumper and skirts ok. If it's the rear spoiler which is the gotcha I'd be inclined to think about swapping the whole rear lid for a good used one at a cost neutral price.

Worth having a look at the seller of these, I have had no dealings personally:

I'm the proud owner of a new 'poverty porka'

1999 Boxster 2.5 in Pastel Yellow, 48,000 miles, Black Leather and a Hard Top.
All for the princely sum of £1,000! Flew through the MOT first time too :0)

Needs a bit of TLC but should make a nice car for the summer smile

Well you just won the Internet.

Pastel is a great colour for sn early Boxster, very 'retro'. Looks great as a coupe too...!
