Very tempted to buy a slice of poverty pork myself. 2.5 Boxster with 130k on the clock, planning to maintain it myself but what is a realistic figure per annum in spare bits? Hartech do all the replacement suspension bits which seem good value, if they are needed. Otherwise the car reads to be OK, 2 owners, a lady for 10 years who had it from new. Got long MOT and plenty of tax, 4 good tyres, just needs a new hood window to be sewn in.

Yay or nay?
Child be great, or could be a money pit. Do you know when the condensers, radiators, bushes, brakes etc were done last?

Think brakes were an advisory on the MOT a few weeks back, full set of discs and pads all round can be had for £300. Condensers for air con? Will check all the rest out when I go look at it. Hopefully there is a nice pile of receipts to sift through!

I'd be tempted to rip out the entire aircon TBH, save loads of weight and complexity - it is a convertible after all!!

That weight saving would repay you in faster acceleration, better braking and cornering, and better MPG. It's a win-win.

I agree with the sentiment but really, it's pretty marginal stuff. I say keep the air con and fit lighter wheels and/or never fuel it above half.

Or lose some weight yourself?

What do you use the AC for in a Boxster?

I have an E30 convertible and never once have I felt the need for AC, despite having (and using) it in a tintop saloon I also drive.

Just had a look at prices for the rads and condenser. About £100 a piece so not horrific if they do need doing, I imagine access to rads is slightly easier as there is no engine pushing up against them?

Just looked at a water pump change guide too, seems pretty straight forward given the lack of working space and the part is £85. I guess these are a service item once into high mileage?

I would - but I'd look at the part in eurocarparts first.

I remember when there was the discussion in the Porsche Forum about turbo water pump bearings going, which caused the impeller to shift slightly and snap off all the plastic impeller blades.

The cheap eurocarparts water pump I was fitting at the time to my old Peugeot cost about £30 IIRC and has a solid bronze/brass impeller.
I know where I'd be spending the £150+ saved by not buying the piece of crap 'real thing' wink

This looks to be a great thread. I'm only on page 2 of 11 (PH Mobile) so this post is more of a book mark for myself. However I am keen in trying to justify a Boxster (preferably an S) to replace my Westfield. While that car is really cheap to run and great fun when the weather is right I've used it for all of 1k miles since March. A few track days without worrying too much about the weather, some trips to work when the mood takes me and a few weekend runs is all I want!

Thanks, the missis and I have been looking seriously at a Boxster in time for our summer hols next year, they seem excellent value and it's pleasing to hear the cheapest ones are not necessarily the nastiest. That intermediate seal thing sounds a bit scary though.

Good thread...

I'm currently hunting for a Boxster S with a £6-7k budget. It's really tricky working out which ones are good 'uns. I really want a car that comes with a pile of invoices to demonstrate all the work that's been done (as my cars always) have, but I'm astonished how unusual this seems to be. FSH means different things to different people it seems...
Don't take this the wrong way but I think the price bracket might be the issue there, £6-7k is pretty much bottom for an S. Top cars with FSH are going to command top money.

Obviously there are always going to be exceptions but they might be the ones to be wary of!

I have a 2002 with FSH, mostly Porsche all as per the schedule, some later services with a well establish specialist, yearly Porsche servicing since I've owned it regardless of the mileage.

Yet that doesn't stop it from needing a replacement gearbox.

It goes in tomorrow with a specialist for a low mileage replacement box, having all the "while the gearbox is off you might as well" stuff done too. IMS replaced, RMS seal, Clutch, Flywheel.

The car has stacks of paperwork, a FSH and has been well looked after all it's life but pricey repairs and maintenance will need doing at some point regardless.

Not good no, but rather unlikely that a belt driven brass impeller is ever going to damage a cast iron block - it's not a form of milling machine wink
What actually happens is that the bearing starts wearing and the seal then goes - losing coolant and alerting you to the issue. Not having to strip down the engine to find all the small bits of plastic is a bonus..

As is the £170 saved....

...which you could add to the odd £100 saved on AC repair, isn't that the entire point of poverty pork? If I wanted to buy a new Porsche with warranty I'd be expecting big bills for wear and tear items, the whole point of a cheap out of warranty car is that you can source quality parts at far lower price - like a £50 costo silver-top battery instead of a £200 pork-o-crap one from a dealer.

When I had my 930 I used to buy replacement Bosch parts from Pelican Parts in the states to save about 50% on the UK OPC costs - please don't get sucked into the 'must pay a fortune for every bit' trap of running an old sprts car, because then running costs _will_ shoot up!

Sorry - the problem I have heard of is the plastic blades snapping off and travelling up the cooling passages, which a) blocks them and b) leaves you with a blade free impeller. A Bronze one may rub a little until someone notices the seal leak but I'll take my chances on that not stranding me in the middle of nowhere without a paddle wink

With this in mind I can't see any point fitting an expensive plastic one, although there is a lot of discussion about this (e.g http://forums.rennlist.com/rennforums/996-forum/36...

Just trying to understand why someone would pay more for something I thought was inferior. I suspect an issue with the pump is that usually on a car it gets changed at cambelt time - a time which never arrives with a porsche engine.

Beautiful car - which seaside was the photo taken at?

The only thing that spoils your car (for me) is the flag on the number plate - makes it look like a builders van!

After reading this thread (which took a long time) I am in the mood for some poverty pork. I am going to sell my 53 plate TT in the new year and buy an old boxster. I will have about £5 to spend so am probably looking at a 90's 2.5. Anybody got any advice for what I should be looking out for on cars so I dont end up with a lemon?

Why would you want to spend £5k on a 2.5 when you can get a 2.7 (if not 3.2) for this money?
