Ah I feel my point was missed, apologies if I wasn’t clear.
I will find a local specialist but I was just thinking of getting someone to inspect the car before I take delivery of the car and wanted a suggestion of a Who does dependable inspections.
DW Performance near Wellingborough seem to be well regarded on social media, and have seen them mentioned a few times. There is a 1997 Boxster with a patchy service history after 40k miles, mostly non OPC independent close to me. It has 70k on the clock & the electric hood doesn't operate, but I have a feeling he'd take less that £3k. Not immaculate but not scruffy. Could be a bargain, could be a moneypit
Hello all,
For those still here from the start of this thread in 2012, thank you for your invaluable insights into the speccing, buying and ownership of poverty Pork! Without the wealth of knowledge in here, I might not have taken this plunge at all, and I certainly wouldn't have ended up with so carefully selected or nicely kitted-out car as I have.
/ado:
The idea and apparent attainability of a Boxster was enough to talk me out of the BMW 645Ci I'd been running for almost four years. A great car which very much suited what I needed at the time, but with a commute now down nine miles of lovely empty B-roads and a reducing need to do long motorway runs it had had its time. After a pretty par two months on the market, it was collected by four French yoofs in a knackered Xsara Picasso and exported, never to be seen again.
If you don't count the speeding ticket I got from Le Plod, with it still on its UK plates six months later!
The replacement is an early 2002 Boxster S which I picked up from a private seller. The history with it is fantastic, and apart from OPC and specialist attention throughout its life, it's had its IMS bearing upgraded and its rear main seal changed recently. It also has an IPD plenum and 74mm throttle body, but appears to be otherwise completely standard.
It's my only road car, its stablemate being a BMW E36 328i race car which is roadable but only gets taken to work very rarely before Covid curtailment, I put around 6000 very enjoyable miles on the car, taking it to 89,300 today. Winter didn't really materialise this year, which is entirely due to me buying a tatty set of 17" 996 wheels and a set of Michelin Alpin 5s. It's now back on its factory 18s for the warm months and drives wonderfully. I'm still very much in the addiction phase and the roof's down whenever the cabin's not liable to get filled with water.
Apart from that set of winters and a pair of Michelin Pilot Sport 4s for the back of the 18s, the car hasn't wanted for much. An MOT failure on lean running was disappointing, but after playing around with lambda sensors turned out to be down to small leaks between each of the joints in the exhaust system. This strikes me as a good excuse to go for a nice tubular manifold. Recommendations cheerfully received.
The only other issue has been the previously-savage air conditioning giving up.. upon disassembly I found the very predictable leaf mulch and corroded condensers, which was irritating because I knew this was a common problem and didn't get around to checking over the winter. Still, two NRF condensers and a drier came to £112 and are on their way to me now. By my reckoning, that's not too bad for six months of 18-year-old sports car ownership.
It's about time for a service, and as the car's history is so exceptional this might well become the first time I pay someone to do that for me. Who should I go to within reasonable striking distance of Stratford-upon-Avon?
Future plans are simply to drive and enjoy. I was supposed to be taking it to the Nürburgring last month, which is a shame, but there will soon be many a track day where it can pop on for the last hour to play around. For the most part, I'm finding it a lovely eight-tenths road car and absolutely the right decision.

Zuffenhaus in Wythall, Worcestershire are specialists who may be worth a try (20 miles ish from Stratford).
They're not in the usual list of Porsche specialists but there may be a reason for that:
https://www.zhporsche.co.uk/about-us
Also, Pro-9 in Redditch who are a bit closer but a bit pricier:

The guys at PCT Select at Honiley are ex PCT Coventry guys who would also be worth a call. I’ve also used Martin Brown when he was next to Shirley’s Garage in Meriden though I’m not sure where he is now Shirley’s have closed. They're not in the usual list of Porsche specialists but there may be a reason for that:

Is that a blue roof or is it just black?
Blue!!Is it me or are the stripes on some of these cars shorter and some go full length?
I'm not anti stripe I just think they look better on cars with a different combination of colours.

Excellent, thanks both. That gives me some numbers to call. Circa £200 seems manageable enough to maintain the car's history. I'd heard of Zuffenhaus before, now you mention them.edc said:
I would use the eBay manifolds. Been on both my 986 since 2012. They match up to the eBay manifolds too.
Ace. I thought they looked rather good. Did you mean they match up to eBay downpipes/catalysts?was8v said:
Such pretty cars in their own right
You can really see the influence of the 550 and 718 in the lines of the 986
The heritage is clear and usually completely ignored.
so much more than a cut price 911

New condensers fitted today, following the mandatory Goods In Quality Inspection. I discovered the existing ones and the receiver/drier are all original, dated end November 2001, a few weeks before the car was built. Surprising that a famed weak point has survived so long, and I suppose a little annoying that they should then both fail so soon into my ownership!
Any case, the job was straightforward and quite satisfying. Regas tomorrow morning, in the hope that no smaller leaks are uncovered now all the test nitrogen doesn't hose out of the condensers!
