I'm not sure I agree about the 986 being simple or basic when compared to the MX-5, MR2, etc.

You've got a 6 cylinder engine, Brembo 4 pots front and rear, all the suspension architecture is aluminium and beautifully designed. In terms of the cabin, they are a cut above, better quality materials, better design and build quality. Much better quality roofs also. They are a proper sports car and if you ever spend a bit of time working on one you can easily see where the money went. When you look at them as a pile of components and compare to almost anything sporty at a similar price point you get so much more car for your money with the Boxster. Beautifully designed and engineered components make for expensive running costs unfortunately which seems to be their Achilles heal for the time being.
Of course you are right. I am not talking technology, i am talking about how it comes across today, compared against all the bloated modern cars.

"My" 986 would have basic spec, no extended leather, 17" and all. Certainly not black, but red, silver or even yellow. But, as posted earlier, that comes from a desire to "turn back time" to the late 1990s when my life was much simpler, and a naked 986 would be the automotive "token" for that.

This is my car - happy to answer any questions on it. I’ve owned it since late last year but since the world changed I’ve got other plans.

It’s a lovely thing, I’ve done around 4k miles in it and it (touch wood!) hasn’t missed a beat. Mechanically it seems very sound. The bodywork is a bit tired in places but it polishes up well and looks great from a few feet away in the pub car park!

Both bumpers have been painted at some point, from accident damage or for the odd parking scuff I don’t know. It is a 22 year old thing after all - it is HPI clear.

I think I’ve priced it fairly for what it is, it’s not a show winner, but it’s a solid, useable car at the bottom of its depreciation curve.
Have sent you a PM, hope you dont mind

Treated my <£9k 911 to a paint correction/polish today and really pleased with the results.

Not my handy work though.

Indeed. There was (and still is) all of the c**p about ‘Poor man’s Porsche’, but in reality they were quite expensive cars compared to the Japanese roadsters and, as you say, very closely related to something more expensive still.
I’ve not heard that st for years now to be honest and good riddance. Probably helps that Clarkson is off the telly. It was very annoying at the time. How much is a Boxster S with mid level options these days? £70k? Hardly chump change.

Nice one. Still on the fence about getting my backbox Carnewaled. I'm sold on the rev-out sound but still wary of more noise when just bimbling around, which I don't want.

Good project that! Gona need about £500 on exhaust and associated lambdas etc, good time to go stainless, flange gasket leaking so assume the bolts have turned to dust, Stomski jig time methinks, allow £500/1000 on that for tool / diy or pay a garage to do it. Then just buy some same colour used panels (wing and something else?), allow £200 for panels ish. Say £1k to diy fix, £2k for a garage to do it. Based on that I wouldn't expect bids to go over £3k to make it a viable repair..

Here's the original, £15k, not £8200 !

Considering that account is used by a registered ebay motor trader with 229 followers, you'd think they would be aware its been compromised. frown

What do the OE exhaust back boxes go for (new from Porsche)?

I followed a 986 recently that looked odd because it had an aftermarket exhaust with no visible rear silencer - just twin pipes poking out in the usual place. I could see the brace/cross member below it...

Kind of like the look of the OE back box. It is, after all, ‘ribbed’ for her pleasure.... :-)

Big upturn today in my auto trader emails for various Porsche searches.
Obviously the relaxing of lockdown and car dealers now able to open should see quite a number of vehicles being put up for sale I'd imagine.

Not sure that is a good price.

I looked at this last week.

https://www.carandclassic.co.uk/car/C1201922

Nice car, drove well, needs some paint on the bumpers (£300) wheels refurbed (£250) and the brakes bleeding properly, brakes been down all round recently.
Had new tyres, hard top, fair history, it was his daughters car since 2015 and only done 12k and serviced once since then.
But was tight, suspension all good, tyres almost new.

Said he would take £4500 with the hard top.

Sell the hard top for £500 and you have a £4k Boxster with 103k miles on it, £4500 to be properly sorted.

I decided I needed something the dog could get in, so bought a Z4 coupe instead, but would have been happy to buy that.

Yeah looks nice that. I'd keep the hardtop because I think they look great. Especially in a nice bright colour like silver. I know they can be a pain to get on and off especially for us bachelors. So I'd need two Boxsters. One with hardtop and one without.

Thanks Billy, just under £6k was a bargain. Been driving electric cars for 5 years, keep trying to plug it in when I get home. Decided to get this as a weekend car now petrol is cheaper. I insured it for £190, my Leaf costs twice that!

Nice, you bought it.

Simon's car?

That was an absolute steal, well done.

Seriously, when you can pick something like that up for that money, it does make me wonder why we spend £46,000 on a new one or £18k on a 10 year old one.
