Poverty air-cooled metal! 1976 911s imported from the States for £20k all in. Only poverty in the air-cooled world, ludicrous compared to water cooled porkers but that is the entry fee at the moment!

I saw your post on the classic thread, what a lovely car, great you have it finally? I will ask you some questions later if you do not mind about the logistics of import, as I'm also looking the same route for something to work on...

Hi, yep arrived last week so getting to know it. Very different to my 996 but that balance is still unmistakable.
Feel free to PM me for information on importing, I think I took a fairly high risk method but when fishing in the shallow end sometimes you have to take a leap of faith.

Unfortunately, my post a week or two ago about this thread inspiring me into a Porsche.. and my reflections of 7 years of ownership has been removed as 'unauthorised advertising'... which is odd.. as I haven't yet come to terms with selling it.. haven't 'PM'd anyone' and when I am eventually ready to say my goodbye's I will pay for an advert !
I am absolutely unreservedly sorry for any possible inference that (what I thought) was a positive contribution was seen as 'unauthorised advertising'.

I feel like I've suffered a miscarriage of justice ! ...are people really that disingenuous and stingy, ffs...

Don't worry about it mate, the new owners of the site are a bit keener on monetising their platform that's all I don't think anyone was offended

There were a fair number of 'my car has this exact spec, age, milage, here are 18 photos, should I sell it, does anyone know anyone interested winkwinkwinkwink nudge nudge wink wink say no more' type thing.

Here’s my first Porsche, bought as my daily driver. Possibly stretching the poverty title a little bit, but not by much! It’s a 2.9 manual 987.2 with 45k miles. In really great condition with full history, the factory options were just rear parking sensors and floor mats laugh Mods are Bilstein B8 dampers, Cayman R springs and a Carnewal Exhaust. Loving it so far.

That 2.9 engine is a real peach. All you ever need in a good B road car really. Clever choice over the 3.4 for a daily too.

2.9 prices are getting interesting yes. I have the gen 2 3.4 in my 981 and it can be a bit of an animal. I rarely get the opportunity to use it properly. A 2.9 would be plenty for me. It's taken me a few years to come to terms with less being more although I'm only talking about it rather than doing it. But that's what the Internet is for right?

That sort of engine capacity has more in common with the older Porsches alot go misty eyed for anyway. I think they will be viewed highly - it's not a DFI and that won't do it any harm long term IMO

I drove my mates fully leather, etc 2.9 Cayman and could easily have one once I get the 3.4 'max things out' bug out of my brain.
The base has different suspension to the S (I think?) but many of them need a refresh so use that as an excuse to play around and do the exhaust while you're at it. The gen 2 base essentially has the same brakes as the S so nothing to do there...

The new owner of that silver one has done well to appreciate the car for what it is.

Haha, thanks.

It's taken me a while to get round to the less is more thing too if I'm being honest. But now I have, I don't really care that a well driven RS3 or AMG A45 is quicker, I'm more bothered about the handling, the engine, the noise it makes and the way it feels to drive. Plus a 2.9 isn't exactly slow, it's just not the fastest thing on the road.

I am the new owner of the Arena 986 2.7 boxster discussed on here no too long ago, and I’m enjoying it immensely. Had an independent examination of the car pre purchase and it came back with a glowing report. Mechanically it’s in great condition and the bodywork though needing some attention at some stage, mostly paint, is rust free. It’s the first car I’ve owned for a while that I haven’t felt the need to remove the power steering from.
We have some superb B roads here in the Northamptonshire, Warwickshire, Oxfordshire borders.

Nice on Gooner.

I sold my Z4 coupe to buy a Cayman, was also thinking of a 2.9 , however, a well sorted F11 LCI 530d touring came up for sale locally and I decided to grab that, which left me a bit short.

Looked at a couple of 987.1 Caymans, and would be happy with those, however a 986 S Boxster turned up locally.

I had been from Norwich to Coventry in the morning, was also a bit hung over and shouldn't have gone and looked at cars while knackered. But I did.

97k miles 2002 seal grey, he wanted £5k.
We agreed on £4200.

Thank fk we did!

Turns out the seller was a bit of a tw*t. Seemed to be pretty tidy and it is, however, as soon as I got it out properly on the way home realised it needed front suspension sorting as rattle. Presumed broken spring.

Also, didn't mention the drivers window doesn't drop till after I paid him.

Oh, or when I asked if both keys were there and he said "Just the one." didn't think to mention the remote button was knackered.

Oh, and the "I will sort the PCM code out for you." was BS. The guy has gone silent on me. Tit!

I said just be honest with me when I bought it. I just wanted to know.

Then on the way home from my father in laws the following night, who has a garage, had a knocking from the rear. Bugger! Proper stitched up I thought.

However....Turns out the knocking was not failed IMS as I first feared, but rear wheel bolts not been done up properly!
Another nice touch from the seller!

The suspected broken spring is actually completely shot top mounts and joy of joys, seized top strut bolt and someone has rounded off the allen bolt. Seller knew this alright!

The drop links are also shot. Bugger!

Anyway, ordered new drop mounts, Bilstein dampers, bearing, top mounts and a pair of OEM blue/yellow springs. The arms etc. all seem super tight, and rear had work done not long ago.

I was planning to swap it all over on Tuesday. However, my father in law passed away on Monday. I still went over on Tuesday, just as much to be around for his wife than anything. But realised doing all the suspension work on my own with the seized links and struts just didn't appeal, I enjoyed doing it with him. So I spent the day cleaning drains and fitting a Pioneer 250DAB Carplay double din unit.

It was a pretty easy install as I have the 2002 Bose (non most) system, so just used the standard harness, all works great with the rear speakers/sub, I was pleasantly surprised how good it sounded.

I have it booked in next week for local Porsche specialist to have the new suspension fitted.

Looking forward to getting it all sorted and driving it!

Not got pics of car, but this was the Carplay unit fitted...

Still keeping an eye out for a Cayman mind. wink

I've started out on what's probably going to be an expensive road to making my 2002 C4 handle nicely. It may be rose tinted spectacles but I'm sure it felt nicer to drive on what was mostly original 100k mile old suspension than it does since the M030 kit and other new hardware went on two summers ago. First step is four new Michelin PS4s, which included downsizing the rear to 265. Those replaced some well treaded but ancient (2013) P-Zeros on the front and worn but legal PS2 on the back. Seems to have cured the first issue, which was a shimmy over things like drain covers (even in the dry). Next up it's being given some four wheel alignment locally just to make sure it's basically in spec. Unless that magically solves everything then it'll be off to Centre Gravity for them to take a look. Not least because there's still a very slight knock of some kind from the OSF.

Thank you Gizlaroc, I actually thought long and hard about some form of Z4, I have a long history of BMW ownership.
But in the end I couldn’t resist the Boxsters aesthetics, shallow I know but so glad I did. smile

Good luck with yours Glz. thumbup

So i've taken the brave pills and bought this:

£2,500.

2.5 986 (110,000 miles and some good history) with a 987 hood and what appears to be a (fairly hideous) aftermarket rear spoiler.

Problems were that the electrics were going mad, (leak in the roof, carpet soaking wet and flooded the box under passenger seat). Carpets are still out as I can't find the bloody leak so have to park it pointing up hill if it rains so it can all drain out the back of the passenger side drain at the back.

New rear tyres as the old ones were very low and it was very hairy in the wet.

Exhaust rattles a bit and "drones" at lower RPMs.

Got some creaks and rattles but over all not to bad.

Goes and sounds lovely though.

Only bought it while my other car is being rebuilt, (by myself) but starting to enjoy this far to much.
Thought it was time for a quick update...

Just got it back from Precision Porsche in East Sussex, they did a full service and I got them to the geometry because it was driving like a pig and destroying tyres. (The pain involved in getting off overtightened locking nuts with the "made of butter" security bolt that split is a long and tedious story involving a 17mm socket and a large hammer all done by the side of the road. That got some interesting looks!

Turns out a previous owner / mechanic had bodged one of the rear camber bolts by welding it after it had snapped! It had snapped again recently which explains the terrifyingly erratic handling.all the geometry was well out so it was pretty much trying to drive to the left all the time. Now sorted and it's like driving a new car now smile

Also changed a tension seal as it was leaking slightly.

They also gave me a long list of things that need to be sorted but are "amber" for now, most of them are things I can do myself so I'll work through them as time & money allow.

Other things that have been done:

After the hood mechanism truly lunched itself I put the roof in "manual mode", actually now prefer it and it's one less thing to go wrong.

Sorted the leak, took the hood off and fitted a new tray after sealing everything back up, now dry as a bone inside.

Removed the hideous spoiler, they hadn't even bothered to de-activate the built in one so god knows what that was doing to the aerodynamics when it was up, (not that I ever drive it that fast...)

So all in all I'm now about £4k in after 6 months of ownership and it seems to be pretty sorted.

I dont have locking wheel nuts on my cars. Total waste of time these days if you ask me. Thieves just can't be bothered with the hard work.

Agreed, unless you have stupidly expensive wheels on your car, and a boxster is for driving not for posing imo.
