I am not aware of another volume manufacturer recently with the engine issues approaching those of of the M96 & M97

I mean, there is Audi they suffered bore scoring too on some 1.8 & 2.0 lumps but my dad got a brand new 1.8T unit fitted completely FOC when his car was 9 years old and worth probably £3k trade, so with that attitude it really isn't comparable.
Amazing service from Audi there.

Mini certainly seem to have a very high rate of catastrophic timing chain failures. We specifically bought the 'safe' 2010 model and still fell foul. BMW (unsurprisingly) suffered same. most independents now recommend replacing tensioner and guides periodically.

I thought I recognised the area too, but couldn't quite think furryboots. I'm in Aberdeen/Dyce until my house is sold, so I'll also keep an eye out for the Boxster.

This could be a bargain for us local-ish loons, depends if they include a fresh MOT for the asking price: https://www.facebook.com/marketplace/item/34441102...

I'd go for a gander at it myself but the aforementioned house sale has put a stop to any more toys for the time being.
It's cheap for a reason (I've enquired about it already!!)

Zero history, one key that might not even lock the doors!

Same owner for last 14 years though, and I'd imagine it would be scrap without any maintenance in 14 years
Interesting. It would at least have required some work for MOTs in that time. Could be worth a punt if it can be chipped down to £2.5kish. Would suit my requirements for a cheap track hack.
The MOT history is reasonable when I checked. It’s apparently maintained by a family friend who is a mechanic. History was lost in a house move.

When you get to that cheap surely you just need to go and look at it and drive it?

I went to look at a 987 recently, serviced on the dot, folder full of receipts, but the reality was it was a bit of a dog.

The guy had owned it for a few years, the sills and bumper were crazing, the suspension felt tired and clunky, the thing felt down on power and the revs were not super smooth on idle, the climate was not blowing cold even though both condensers had been replaced, he had put two bloody run flats on the rear and recently at a cost of nearly £300, some of the switchgear was worn. The car just felt tired even though it had been advertised as full service history and extensive folder of paperwork to show 'no expense spared'.

I reckon it would have needed £2-3000 to get it right.

My mate took in a 2.5 last summer, crappy history, windows not dropping properly with door handle, key not synced, rear window cracked, for £1200. The reality was it drove amazingly well, felt really tight and the old boy said he just did whatever needed doing, and it showed.
It was that funny turquoise colour, otherwise I would have had it.

Leggy early cars are worth around 10 it seems so Hartech is only adding 2k to the price. If the gen 2 cars keeps dropping - slowly it seems - then they will always depress gen 1 prices.

Interesting car listed in the other ads. A turbo conversion gen 1 Cayman converted by Parr. This car already sold. Knowing what we know about gen 1 engines suffering from heat related problems this seems a curious route to follow but I guess at the time less fear surrounded this engine.

The supercharged Parr Cayman was for sale for a while last year as I pointed it out to a friend. The colour didn’t help it sell IMO. Parr were featured in one of the Porsche mags with their first supercharged conversion way back & at the time the journalist raved about it as it was apparently great to drive - it is though very much a “niche” market & would take a dedicated buyer for such a car (although it looks like they found that person in the end!).

I remember that article I think, the writer said he’d shot past an RS4 on a track day and the driver of the Audi had a WTF look on his face!

I think one of the chaps here also had that sort of Cayman with heavy mods. The reality is the problem of cooling as he pointed out. Lovely projects but I personally can not see the appeal, considering the cost as you can easily get a bit high-miled Evora instead, much more reliability on the engine department and definitely more fun on the track.

@JS1500 ,

Where did you get that knob (oo-er) made (or did you do it yourself)?

Have seen this style offered in the States, but not in the UK.
It was these guys...

they did an excellent job.
Can't be faulted!

I was trying to work our why I recognised this car and realised we live just around the corner and bring our daughter to the playpark in the background. Always liked seeing your red 996 and will keep an eye out for the Boxster!

No poverty pork in our household sadly (although I did have a peridot Cayman R until a couple of years ago) but keen to pick one up at some point!
Howdy neighbour!
It's a small world.

I was too slow on this one, spoke the vendor a few hours ago as the car was being viewed by someone, he called me back 10 mins later - sold. Congratulations if it was anyone from here.

Such a mixed bag of stuff out there - but also shocked at the low quality from a couple of 'specialists' - seems that 996/986//987/997s are selling well at the moment and little quality control on the forecourt.

If anyone knows of a 987 Cayman S similar to this one coming up, do let us know

That's the problem with heavy mods - always concerns about reliability, and when OEM is an M97 it makes it even worse

Is that the Amercain guy with the bald head and middle parting brushed from the back who doesn't like any car that isn't his 30 year old Toyota sedan?

Unfortunately, my post a week or two ago about this thread inspiring me into a Porsche.. and my reflections of 7 years of ownership has been removed as 'unauthorised advertising'... which is odd.. as I haven't yet come to terms with selling it.. haven't 'PM'd anyone' and when I am eventually ready to say my goodbye's I will pay for an advert !
I am absolutely unreservedly sorry for any possible inference that (what I thought) was a positive contribution was seen as 'unauthorised advertising'.

I feel like I've suffered a miscarriage of justice ! ...are people really that disingenuous and stingy, ffs...
So long as it wasn’t a ‘Black Porsche’ heaven forbid.... nono

Ha'ha, well remembered (my earlier post that is), no not black - mine is silver and still on the drive...

My only update is that I have had to do some repairs since my previous post, my back tyres needed a couple of psi adding smile

I will put an ad on pistonheads when I've progressed a bit more with the grieving process. Will try to get a few piccies' posted this weekend.
