Really well for quick road use in my view; drives perfectly straight over all surfaces.

If you want outright performance it’s not the right choice but aesthetically I really like the look and it’s more than capable of putting a smile on my face.

ETA.

I get a very small amount of rubbing on the arch liner on full lock that I would like to address.

The little 17 tyres still give the car way more grip than my brain can understand and way more grip than I can use on roads without being an idiot even in the wet. But I'm all about thinner tyres now since my aquaplaning incident.

I can see why you might feel that way. In fairness 17's still look great on 996.

I switched from 18 to 17 and have never looked back. The big difference is not just diameter but the width. 18 are 225 front but 17 are only 205. They look tiny and weigh very little. The steering is so much more communicative with 17.
As CMoose regularly said, 17's the by far the best choice for wheel size on 987's. I can only guess that something similar applies to 997's.

Again I think the big difference with 17 on the 987 is the 205 front compared to 235 on 18 and 19. Sure the diameter change makes a difference but the much thinner tyre will also add to this.

I think the 997 looks good on 18. But with the massive discs I don't think one could take a 17.

Ooh thats nice, I could have had that in budget too.

Whats the smaller DFI engine like? Is it 'zingy' like the older smaller engines? Shorter gearing than an S?

Apparently the 2.9 is not DFI. Well that's what cmoose told me in a post. Now deleted. I think it has about 250bhp and hits 60 in 5.7 secs so hardly a slouch. Chris Harris bought a 2.9 or 2.7 Cayman and loved it. Dont forget the first 986 3.2 was only 250 bhp too.

Ah, just googled, looks correct.

Uses the new engine architecture carried right through onto 981, 991 etc (so no IMS RMS nonsense at last) but its not direct injection (DFI) like the bigger ones.

Can't believe the asking prices of these still. I paid £18k from RPM for a 2.9 PDK Boxster with a really nice spec in 2015 and 60k miles. Fantastic car, loved it, couldn't give it away for £15k 18 months later with 70k on it.

There was a nice looking manual 2.9 Boxster in black hanging about last year that had ~130k miles on it for £11k, looked really nice, took ages to sell.

If that fetches £16k it's proper madness.

Nope. 987 standard size was 17inch.

This

Standard on the smaller car I think and 18 standard on the larger engine'd car.

Cmoose ran his 3.4 987 with 17 so they will fit over the brakes but you need a little 5mm [I think] spacer at the front.

Really beautiful car, I drove one a few years back in Spain. To be frank, I would get a 986 2.7 or 3.2 though, around 5-6k range instead as a second/weekend car. They are more value for that they are, 2.9 has no IMS or other risks but can't just put 15k on a 100k boxster, that's a bit too much.

Why are they the best choice over a set of 18's or 19's if the overall weight is the same?

I would not say they are the best. Its up to the individual. The main difference is the width -

17 is 205 F and 235 R
18 is 235 F and 265 R
19 is 235 F and 265 R

So you have softer sidewalls and lighter wheels and lighter tyres if you go 17.

Softer sidewalls mean a bit less outright grip which makes them more playful but ultimately slower.

Also more obvious transitions between grip and then starting to reach the limit of grip. So as the tyre starts to distort and lose shape under hard cornering then the contact patch will start to gradually lose contact with the road and the tyre will start to scrub the tyre wall slightly instead. With a softer tyre wall this transition is more obvious to the less skilled driver. Where as a stiff side wall low profile type will grip grip grip then bang you are sliding.

If you change from big wheels and low profile tyres to a smaller diameter setup with softer sidewalls you can feel the tyres flexing beneath you even if you are a sheet driver like me.
