Up close the paintwork is poor. Scratches galore. Listing describes it as a project, and considering most dealers veer on the side of positivity then by saying its a project means in reality its a money pit.

Congrats! May you have many happy and fast miles in her!

(Price: Oooof! That's steep! However everything has been going up recently, particularly interesting things like old Porsches, and I've not looked at prices lately.)

Yeah, I've been looking at cars for months now, and the prices are definitely on the climb. I saw a tidy 2.5 go at £9100 the other day at auction. Elises are up to £20k as well. Even GT86s aren't particularly cheap, having risen a good few grand. Possible to get the odd bargain, but most the cheaper Boxsters I've seen looked a bit rough around the edges. I pondered waiting for prices to drop again, but not convinced they will anytime soon, and life is too short.

That's how I felt about my 996. There were only a few cars within budget anyway and I figured that if I waited any longer I would simply miss the boat. Here we are a month or so later and there are none available at the price I paid.

I've finally bought an older Boxster. Not sure if I mentioned it here yet.

I was looking for an earlier 986 Boxster for about 2 or 3 years maybe even more. I bid on a few but didn't get anywhere until I snared this one. I think the lower and middle of the market has risen a bit but the top end is largely similar. You have to pay about 10 to 12 for something super super clean and tidy with well below average miles on. There are more examples now hovering in the 7 to 9 grand range which would have been in the 5 to 7 grand range before. I didn't feel the need to rush to buy mine. I've just been plugging away at anything that looked decent for a while now.

When I bought my 996 I wanted to buy one at the cheaper end of the market to see what all the fuss was about. That way if I didn't like it I could sell it on easily enough. I might still do that now not sure. Now that I have a tatty 996 I am torn between keeping it as is or tidying it up. Once you start thinking about repainting a car from top to bottom you have to start to ask yourself if its better to just buy a nicer car to start with.

So I didn't want to get stuck in this position with my Boxster purchase. The plan was to start with a nicer one and then hopefully this will stop me from looking at what else is for sale. But I dont think that will ever stop right lads?

One of my car mates always say this about buying cars - you either buy a cheap one because its really cheap or a really nice one because its really nice. I'm beginning to agree with him The middle is just too confusing if you ask me.

The range between tatty and worn to minty mint in the 996 world is probably 15k to 25k.
The range between tatty and worn to minty mint in the 986 world is probably 6k to 12k.

I think the sweet spot - for me - is to buy a nice 986 Boxster from the top end of the range. So thats my man maths explained.

They are great cars these which feels like what people have been saying now for almost 10 years right or at least since this thread started....in Jan 2012.

I picked it up last night smile - I had a 987 Boxster before, a 996 Tiptronic a few years ago and a 997.2 C2S up until a few months ago and it certainly seems to drive well even compared to more modern 911.

Identified a few odd jobs but nothing too major- the service history is mind-blowing, one owner for the last 20 years with literally £50k+ in 100s of invoices.

I think I need to bond with it- gear change is a bit long throw and the steering wheel seems huge but I my other car is a new Fiesta ST and that's all snappy handling and 'boosty lulz' for instant gratification whereas I think this is obviously softer, older and will take a few decent drives to get to know it. Like all the best cars (hopefully!).

Jobs are- new tyres, minor service (just for my own peace of mind) new headunit (the Kenwood one in it has a mind of its own apparently!) and a bit of elbow grease on the paintwork but seems like a really nice genuine car.

In short- happy with my poverty pork purchase!!

Funnily enough that's my experience also. I remember driving home in the first E30 M3 I bought and asking myself 'what have I done?'. The next day we drove down here to Cornwall and by the time I reached Yeovil via the A303 I was smitten. I got the same feeling about the 996 when I took it up to Barnstaple a couple of weeks back. Especially after swapping the steering wheel for the Mod07 as it just makes me feel so much more connected and the feel much more delicate.

Congrats -if I could have justified another car, I would have taken a look too (would have looked good next to my Ocean Blue 986!). I think you’ve probably got a cracker there.

I had an e30 M3 for about 10 years and that was exactly the car I was thinking of!

beer

It's funny how the two cars have so much in common despite being so very different. I bought an E46 M3 to replace the E30 but I just never jelled with it. It was fast and powerful but just didn't have the delicacy of the E30. The 996 just seems to reward being smooth and precise, whilst being pretty effortless. Obviously the levels of rear grip take some adjusting to but once I developed some confidence everything just seemed to come together and made a decidedly mediocre driver like myself feel competent and flattered with the pace I could achieve. More than that though, it was just good fun! smile

Check your stack of invoices for new engine mounts, if they have not been changed add them to your list, it is not an expensive fix (£250) but makes such a difference to the ride.

BTW, you are aware that Porsche slipped in a extra 10hp into the Ocean blue cars ;-)

Cheers- I was wondering about that as I hear that also improves the gearchange. It's not bad as such but I think it should be a bit more positive.
