986 prices have jumped considerably over the last 18 months

I started looking for one and the "budget" end was £3-4k for a useable car needing minimal fettling

Now, you're paying £5k minimum and the absolute snotters are £-4k

I think I spotted the drive shaft gators on my 986 looking a bit past their best - wheel end. These are an MOT item right? How hard are they to deal with?

As far as CV boots go, hard. You need to take the whole driveshaft out, remove the inner cv joint off the shaft so you can then slide the outer boot off.

Ok thanks

If I source some 2nd hand shafts are they all the same on the 986?

On the 981 the 2.7 is different to the 3.4 and the PDK is different to the manual. So 4 types in total I guess.

They are all different. The 5 speed manual has early and later ones (difference is larger bolts on the flanges), the automatic ones are a different length to manual ones and the 6 speed uses different shafts to the 5 speed.

I like this, well not all the chinz but the work completed makes it seem a good buy. I prefer the .2 aero to the .1 and in silver its an interesting contradiction between lairy and plain.

Where's the mileage? Like the way it also makes a big deal of the spec and sports exhaust but the later description tells of an aftermarket one.

It was on 911UK but can’t find it now, probably as the price has gone up £3k

It appears to be a .2 front with a .1 rear.

A GT3 "Evocation"?

Never heard of one of those before. Is that like the commonly-spotted BMW M3(18)?

They've been using that term for air cooled cars for a long time as it sounds more credible and adds more £££ than replica, copy, looky likey, modified etc.

Should the aero .1 and .2 side skirts be the same or different?

Agree 100%. That and Merc 200d AMG, et al.

Tacky, tacky, tacky. It's not like a vanilla Carerra is something to be ashamed of? Mutton dressed as lamb, would simply put me off viewing the thing.

PS:
artic silver
metropolitan blue

That car, and that ad is just a turn off. It's like those writeups that contain "much sort after"

Ah the very rare 996.1 GT3 RS.

If you look at the advert it looks like it's got exhaust tips attached directly to the cats, must be pretty much undriveable it's so loud.

Agreed with the mutton dressed as lamb - although I'm not sure a standard 996 is mutton exactly, maybe 'very nice steak dressed as wagu'?

A quick squint on the online MOT history says in September ‘20 it was 110k miles for the silver 996 GT3 evocation. I think the seller must be using FGP as his price comparison/guide to work back from whistle

Both of those are bad but the yellow one is comically so, horrific.

Just as with the other 911s, unless its a 'genuine' RS or whatever, they always look best as they were initially conceived - narrow body, nice conservative wheels, clean lines...
