I thought I’d return to this thread after a long time away. Nearly 8 years ago I bought a cheap Boxster 986 2.7 SportDesign to “scratch the itch”. I’ve kept it all this time…going from a daily to a second and then third car. During this time I’ve done a lot of work to it, all DIY, including…
-Front end refresh, coffin arms, drop links, top mounts, tuning forks, shocks
-Recon steering rack
-Bypassed exhaust, with bypass pipes wrapped
-Discs, pads, sensors, brake pipes, braided lines, fluid, calliper overhaul and repaint
-Radiators/condensers/water pump
-New cat and a couple of O2 sensors (Astra ones are identical if you swap the plugs over)
-Usual annoying things like window mechanism, airbag light
-Repainted the dash in the original SportDesign crackle finish silver
-Wheel refurb
-Servicing, fluids belts etc

In preparation for the NC500 in a few weeks, I’ve given the car a full detail…never done it before, time consuming, expensive on materials but satisfying, and the results are incredible.

Bloody love this old thing, about to turn 20 and looking, driving and sounding amazing even with 90k on the clock. And, every single thing works as it should!

986 really has matured into a decent modern classic IMHO.

I think these things are undervalued and will do well from here on in.

currently one on ebay from a fire damaged car, £1.5k

I'm not sure If I would be brave enough to drive a flat 6 with a gearbox donated from fire-damaged car though, especially on m25!

I see about 4 or 5 now on eBay all for less than 2 grand which is typical as I dont need one. Although my Germany sourced box was from a 50,000km car - according to the seller. Buying one from a 100,000 mile car you dont really know what you're getting. The other option is to go straight for a refurb of the existing box. Mine was beyond economical repair. Bits of cogs were floating around inside.

The parts are just unnecessarily expensive. Comparison, you would probably spend around £500-700 for a gearbox rebuild on a TVR Tuscan a few years ago. Flat 6 Germania tax is just unacceptable, and that's where the "poverty pork" loses its appeal imho. coffee

Even the 'dogleg' Getrag 265 in my E30 M3 was a steal compared to a 996 box.

I paid £700 for a gearbox rebuild on my 996 last year. Well, 1.1k actually as I fitted a LSD at the same time but there you go.

Just need to shop around.

So I think I need to do this to my own 996 3.4. Getting a bit whiney, which The Internet would suggest is the pinion bearing. Generally getting pretty recalcitrant at shifting when cold, but thankfully not popping out of 2nd yet.

Will get a specialist to confirm, but would be great to hear who you used for the job. Price feels acceptable.

Job was done by these guys:

http://www.helicalgearboxes.com/

That didn't include removal and refitting was just the cost for the rebuild but I thought it was very fair and the box has been silent and leak free for over a year/7k+ miles now. Very happy to recommend them.

Most boxes are a bit stubborn into 2nd when cold in my experience.

Mine can be a little reluctant at time. It would go in if I were more aggressive with it but I learned from my old M3's and either double de clutch or go for 3rd instead, then back to second. Once there's a bit of heat in the box though, it's fine.

Just bought myself a 2.7 Boxster having had a slew of TVRs and fast Jags. It's got full service history with all the bearings/seals, clutch & condensers done & premium tyres etc. On just under 80k miles - I paid £5,600 which seems like a steal.

Having never had a Porsche I thought I might find it a little anodyne but I have to say I'm rather enamoured with it. It's fast enough to be entertaining and feels so planted compared to my previous cars. My daughter commented that she's not even scared when I go fast, like in the TVR! It's just a lovely thing.

Could be a touch more vocal though, so I may get some sort of sports exhaust for it, but otherwise I love it.

As Shalmaneser will agree, finding a gearbox (or Porsche) specialist with the correct capacity press is a bit of a challenge...I think to push the pinion bearing on, you need at least a 35 tonne press and I only found one who had the right press in my area & has to wait for them to do my gearbox (& I just left the box with them & provided the parts). FWIW, my ex OPC techie dropped the gearbox from my C4 (manual) in approximately 12 minutes although it took a bit longer to put it back in, just so that you know hehe

Shocking lack of detail here. Us Porsche enthusiasts are not interested in approximate times. We need precise measurements.

I actually dropped the box myself and it was certainly one of the easier clutch jobs I've ever done - not having to remove the exhaust or many heat shields etc makes the jobs much easier!

Thought this looks a steal if it checks out. 2006 Boxster S 3.4. 60k miles, 7.5k. Good spec, extended leather, sports seats (heated), sports steering wheel.

Even with IMS worries, that is worth a punt if it checks out in other areas. Great looking thing for the price, and 295hp is useful.

Are you gonna check it out or just posting for others?

Looks cheap enough yes, almost suspiciously cheap.

Interior looks grey to me so triple grey right?
