Looked immaculate and well cared for. Was well specced with litronics and 18" Sport Designs and the owner has updated it with a glass hood. I like cars like these - parked on the road, probably a daily driver.

As I got the car for such a steal I decided to have the front bumper, wings, bonnet and rear bumper resprayed due to general scuffs and stone chipping. I was quoted £1500 for this and it's being done by the Porsche Approved bodyshop The reason for this is because the car has been at Porsche all it's life and I felt it a shame to ruin this with anything other than a perfect paint job.

However, as work progressed the front bumper was flexed/cracked to the point it was cheaper to buy a new one. Then when the rear bumper came off they found the beam and impact shock absorber were also damaged.

The car will be quite literally mint once I've finished it off with refurbished wheels I have no plans on getting rid of the car any time soon so for me it's money well spent.

Fair play, didn't realise you were getting that much work done - £1,500 for respraying half the car isn't too unreasonable depending on where you are in the country, and as you say it's Porsche approved. Prices soon add up if you need a new bumper and sundries.

Just yesterday, I replaced the A/C condensers and drier. I do need to replace the rear discs and pads, but once all that's done, I may tackle some niggly bits of bodywork a little later on.

What's the story with this then? 986.2 with 996.2 front end. Quite an entailed swap - wings, bumper and lights. Wonder if it's been in a shunt.

I'm sorry but that looks wrong on so many levels - as said not Anniversary, 996.2 front end (almost certainly due to accident), part service history, poorly written advert, crappy photos, cheap tyres (EP?), discs look rough, centre console badly scratched, massively over priced.

Porsche did offer a turbo look wheel for the 986.2. I could live with that front IF the lights are zenon and throw good light. I'm not too keen on the 986.2 bumpers with their extra fins and fuss. The c4s bumper has a nice flat shape but in a light colour the grills and gaps can look a bit fussy too. Dark blue looks good - is it called midnight blue?

Those wheels were definitely offered on the 986-1 I know because mine had them & they were specc'd from new.

So he picked this up at the weekend and appears to be loving it. I'm feeling quite smug because without me going on about mine he wouldn't have bought one. So all is good. He bought a 996.2 with 17 inch wheels and standard suspension.

We checked the tyres and the fronts are ps2 dated 2008 so these are getting changed asap.

The clutch feels a bit stiff so does that mean its getting tired?

He thinks the engine mounts are feeling a bit saggy as he can feel the engine moving when you come on or off the throttle. He's thinking new ones are a good idea. I suggested he could have mine as they're quite new and I'm planning to go for some which are firmer.

He changed both the condensors last night. Took him an hour.

Slightly OT but thought I'd post anyway...

I got caught up in someone else's accident on the M42 a couple of weeks back which resulted in my E91 325D being written off..and replaced with a 3.0 flat 6, manual box, bilsteins... It's a lot of car for £3k and a lovely engine.

Judging by the markings on the old condensers, they were OE, possibly as fitted at the factory. Getting regassed tomorrow.

The owner could do with learning to use a camera better, but apart from the somewhat dodgy crests on the seats and the DRLs, doesn't seem too bad. I spy Tequipment gear knob / handbrake and trip computer. Appears to have extended leather too.

Quick question, since these boys getting into really high mileage now. How is the timing chain for 100k mileage poverty porks? 996 & 986 and later? would they need replacing too or only chain guides are enough to keep them going. I do remember gen 2's had an updated design somehow, they might hold a bit better but we have not seen any 150 or 200k DFI engines yet.

Chain guide pads would be worn but perhaps not worn out and hartech say main bearings may be done.

I do oil analysis at every other change (12k) via millers to check for bearing shell material. They always say "oil is fine put it back in and recheck in 6k" but the oil is long gone by the time results are back.

Theres loads on 200k+ even 300k without engine work. Do you feel lucky?

I'm banking on the uplift in value covering a rebuild cost sometime in the next 70k miles..... incidentally complete bottom ends are a reasonable price direct from Porsche.

It's a bit sharper than an SE spec E91... my only experience with 3 series. After 7 years it's nice to have a change. Could be better though, lacks the weight & precision in the controls that Porsche does so well. Jap cars tend to be lighter of course. Could probably do with new dampers I think, 109k miles from new. Car is a bit crashy, but still rolls more than you'd expect. Hangs on pretty well though & is quite neutral. I had a B4 RSK many years ago, that was a much newer car & the ride was certainly better (was on 17's whereas this is on 18's) Gear linkage is a bit loose yet at the same time over centred so is easy to go 5-4 instead of 5-6 if you're not concentrating. But having said all that, you would be paying £5-6k for an equivalent 330i E90. The engine is the standout bit though - great noise, very flexible and likes to rev. It'll do until we have a bit of a fleet re-think later in the year. (996 and 944 will be staying though)

Mine's booked in mid April at northway for a check on timing chain, pads etc. I do annual oil and filter changes but probably do average of 4k miles per year. Engine (996 3.4) is on 112k miles, and nothing has been replaced yet. I check the filter every time and there's never any bits of plastic from the guides (or anything else for that matter) and also get the oil sent off for analysis which hasn't indicated any concern either.

The reason I'm taking it in is that I'm seeing excessive camshaft decision with the durametric so want it properly checked out and maybe replace the tensioners (one is weeping). However both northway and neinmeister said if there are no funny noises, it still pulls well, and no fault codes coming up then there's probably nothing too worry about. So I'm not
