Also, what are people's thoughts on this:

https://www.gumtree.com/p/porsche/porsche-boxster-...

Have spoken to the owner who will be taking it back from the dealer. Is looking for around £5k.

A little leggy, but maybe there is room for haggling.

Original colour (paint to sample) but has had a pukka respray recently.

Only two previous owners and a stack of bills.

Worth pursuing if it can be had for something starting with a 4? Going to quiz the owner in detail tonight. 150k is a lot of miles considering the price imo.

I initially clicked on this advert as it was a colour I've not seen before. I read the service history on the advert and it's eye watering. I personally think listing all the costs for work done on the advert is a bad move, it's enough to scare you off owning a Porsche altogether. Who can justify bills like these on a 5k car?

Found it
So, he's hinted he'd take £4.6k for it....it is tempting me at that price. Hasn't really moved much in a while though. Air con status unknown, but he'll get back to me. Does have Eibach springs though, which is good / not so good, depending which way you look at it.

How long would you keep it?

For the foreseeable - couple of years / 20k at least? Although that's like asking how long a piece of string is.

I had no intention of getting rid of my previous one after getting it up to scratch, but sometimes, the decisions are taken out of our hands.

To me, you're potentially buying into something which is a hard sell when you want rid. As a long term keeper it makes more sense to me.

I'd say Eibach springs is a neutral. The real value is in better or fresh dampers whether that's at the bust the bank special level of more affordable M030 or Koni FSD.

The best "mods" on an aging 986 are fresh arms/bushes and fresh dampers. If you only ever drive at up 6 or 7/10ths you probably won't notice the difference though.

Come on lad - we all drive these at 3/10ths but want to believe its 9.99/10ths.

Loading the chassis in any significant way, even a keenly executed late night roundabout or slip road, will highlight a car in need of a suspension refresh imo.

I'm sure for many that statement is true. I try not to make a habit of driving beyond my and my car's limit but it happens from time to time. If I drive at 10/10ths on the road most of the time I'd quickly be arrested and be a nervous wreck anyway! I try to save it for the right roads at the quietest times. For sure most people would see that sort of driving as dangerous, reckless anti social etc. If I'm just going to the shops then it's 1/10. If it's "leisure" driving especially abroad then it's more often than not 7/10ths plus.

Definitely. I think that's the case (dampers) for most cars actually.

is the m030 kit still a bargain?

Bargain is all relative I guess but I believe the M030 kit was £650 in 2012, when I bought one, through to about 2015 is more like £1200+ now. More recently Koni FSD dampers cost me ~£700.

Do Bilstein make dampers - like B4, B6 or B8 - for the 986?

Answer yes.

These look interesting -

This is lovely, if slightly pricey. Not too sure about what it's 'actually' worth though. Serviced every year irrespective of mileage. I likey.

Ref suspension -

You WILL notice a suspension refresh. Mine was 'fine'. No leaks, MOT pass standard, nothing dropping off or banging and clanking. But mostly original at 120k+.

I did all the arms, ARB links, trailing links, track rods, top mounts, etc matched to some Koni FSD's. The difference is significant

Total cost to me was about £1200 - that's me sourcing all the parts, using as many discounts and all the internet shopper savvy available. All good, known brand parts, not chinese or ebay junk. If you are able to do the work yourself its highly reccomended.

( I would caveat that if I were paying someone to source the parts and do the work I bet it could easily have been £2.5k. )

And that why £650 M030 is such a stall don't forget it includes ARBs so even at just over £1k it's still value. Koni FSD plus H&R M030 spec springd into my M030 car was about £850.

Yes, B4s (The black ones!) are effectively the OEM replacement unit.

I am pretty sure that the Koni FSD's I bought worked out same or similar cost to the B4s, with B6 and B8 (yellows) being more cost.

B6's are 'sports' and B8s are shortened bodies for use with lowering springs.

2001 Y, 3.2S Manual, 77k, £7995

A slight premium but potentially justified. Due a service. Maybe some front discs/pads/lines?

Yes, sadly over budget for me. Whether that qualifies as 'poverty' (for a 986) is also open to debate. I'd say between 5 - 6k is the limit for that definition. It is a nice car, however, and looking at some other optimistically priced 986s out there, isn't too unrealistic.

My front adjusters are jammed solid so they probably need a refurb. Until then I guess the jury is out. Another job to add to the growing list.

For KWs on a 986 you have to modify the rear sheet metal to allow the adjusters to poke through and be useable.
