Hi Melv, yep I'll get all the remedial work done as soon as I get the car home (if I do). Thanks for the info.

The plate is obviously covering damage to the casing or a leak, although it's an extreme way to fix a leak. It's dry though and alters nothing apart from being a right bodge.

If I get it I'd love any hints and tips on braking on track after you said you warped all of your discs. Is there any particular tricks or just an adjustment in the way you brake, pedal pressure, duration, etc, or is it simply that you have to go a bit easier in general on them?

Cheers.

On track braking -instead of gentle to hard as you would brake on the road, it's a short, sharp stab in a straight line to reduce the speed before changing gear (if necessary) and turning in.......and then a whole lap at the end of a session without touching the brakes......and don't put on the hand brake and don't sit on the brakes in the paddock at the end of the session, which is what I think I did at Croft to stop the car rolling whilst queueing to get back in!!!...and this from 17 years of track days......have fun! thumbup

Mis-read that as only being allowed to brake once per lap!

Good update mate & alls looking good smile

Funny thing with me & the SC was I loved the brakes & the gearbox-it was the steering & the feel I couldn't get on with-pretty much the opposite of what everyone else thinks then...

As for me I picked up a Z4M coupe for sh*ts & giggles last week-& it does make you giggle!

Sideways everywhere, the misses loves the refinement & it looks good to boot.
Happy daysbiggrin

Nice one!!
I love Bmw's almost as much as Porsches.
All I flick between in the classifieds are Porsches and M cars, well the odd Elise/Exige too.

They do make me question spending £15k on an old 964 with high miles when you can find a lovely one of those in as new condition instead.
My girlfriend prefers the newer stuff too, to a degree.

Are you starting a thread in readers cars? If so I'll be sure to have a read. thumbup

PS. The purists won't like this but I think they look fantastic with CSL wheels on.

Yeah I'm going to start a thread once I get a spare hour or so & some decent pictures.

It's some car for the money (exactly what I need at the moment!) & I can't wait to get it out to spa & the ring next month. There'll be a bit of tinkering as well, I like the csl wheels but I'm thinking of running 18's for cheaper track tyres-you try finding LM's in bimmer sizes though!

Bang some winter tyres on the ZM alloys & I'm good for 365 days a year hopefully smile

  • ABS/4WD light on - Owner told me about this when I first asked about faults. He says it comes on if car has sat for weeks but usually goes off. Garage said fair enough but they have to report it, obviously. I'm not too worried as it could just be a sensor, on the other hand it could be something on the 4x4 system, hence it's a slight concern, only slight though.
Hi Mark,

Friend had this issue and a new relay cured the problem. This was fitted after a garage diagnosed a new ECU would be needed rolleyes (£££££'s) before he bought it.

Good luck with it.

Craig - I look forward to seeing some pics. I know what you mean about keeping the wheels a touch smaller too. Will probably feel better as well as keeping costs down.

BN - Alright there John. Yep I'll definitely be at Croft at least once this year. You taking the Focus on track? They only do about 4 noisy (105db) car days per year now. I'll send you a PM in a minute about the event (usually in June) I get on so you can look out for it. wink

Leigh - Yep, thanks for the info. It's certainly no deal breaker, especially now a few people, plus yourself have mentioned it. Should hear back with regards to the compressions tomorrow, I would think. That would be the deal breaker, should something be a miss. smile

ETA - John, just tried to email you through here but it wouldn't send. I'll get in touch nearer the time anyway, to let you know about the event, just incase you want to get down for it. I've still got your number too.

I don't think I'll be on track Mark but I will try to keep that weekend free to come up and watch. Let me know what time you're setting off and we can have a run up togeather.

Morning John,
it's usually a weekday unfortunately but I'll give you a shout anyway. There's a few of us go down, if you can make it, good. If not, no probs. smile

great thread this...

sold my 964 c4 a while back and its the only car i regret selling so for your intended use and with the mods you want to do i dont think the diff between c2 and c4 matters.. as you rightly state its about getting one in the right condition at a price that makes sense...

of the points picked up in the ppi its this one that id look out for

"Now the really bad one!!

Repair plate on gearbox - Worst fault in my eyes. The car had a second-hand replacement box 15K ago before current owner. It turns out that the box has had a repair plate welded on the base, but what the bodgers have done is weld it over the 2 halves of the casings!!! Hence, if you ever need split the casings, you'd have to grind off the plate, repair the box then reverse the steps."

its a used box and the used box itself is 15k miles old. for peace of mind i would want to allow for a replacement box in the price you pay

all the others are liveable with and par for course but would want to understand potential causes of the dash light and then see if happy with the risk

good luck

Hi RC, thanks for the input.

I would have taken my chances with the ABS light and the gearbox plate didn't really affect anything other than looking a bit bodgey. I doubt I could have chipped the seller down another £2k+ though for a replacement box. I know if I was selling it for a fair price (which £12k was), I wouldn't have gone any further, but I know what you're saying. All irrelevant now, as you'll see below. smile

I hope your R32 is going well. Nice cars.

UPDATE

OK, car is a no go unfortunately.
Compression test results ok but, leakdown test not so good. Garage say it's leaking past the rings so will require a rebuild in the future, so I'm oot!

Bit of a bummer, falling at the final hurdle but hey-ho, that's the purpose of the inspection. £200 has saved me a £5000 bill.
Proof if it were needed for anyone, that inspections are vital on used Pork, even if you're fairly clued up. The car drove lovely apparently with no evidence of power loss, but there you go, you never know what is lurking beneath.

So thanks to everyone for their input. I've taken it all onboard and will continue on my search, although I'm going to have a breather, as it gets a bit intense ringing sellers, asking questions, planning when to go down, organising inspections, etc.

I'm going to the lakes for the weekend with the girlfriend so may dig the 964T out and take that. It hasn't really been out since October!

I'm also opening up the search a bit to other makes. I'm now thinking do I want a 2 car garage with both cars being the same, however much I love 964s.

964 is still top of the list, I think but, I'm also looking into Westfields as I love lightweight cars. Still on the list are 968CS, maybe Elise/Exiges and Z3M/Z4m Coupes.

Like I say, 964 is still the favourite as it does everything I want, however if I keep my old BMW for work I can get a car even more involving than a 964 on track, for a lot less. I'll see what comes up.

Cheers. smile

It is a shame it did not work out. But that is what a PPI is for. Appbiz I can recomend. Bought the RS door cards for my 3.2 from them. Very helpfull. As said just make sure you tell them RHD. You need two electric window switch holes on the right and one on the left. Good luck in your search

Yep, cheers Graeme, will definitely be giving Appbiz a call once I get a car.

The to do list I have here is -

Recaros, rear seat delete carpets (full carpet set if not already black), door cards, suede dished steering wheel, sort suspension setup.

That would get me to next winter quite happily I think.

Don't talk about Z's. My sister bought a brand new Z4MC three years ago. Sold it last year with 1200 miles on the clock. Bloody pissed off I never got to drive it. Don't ask frown

Sorry to hear it's a no go Marky. The signs were looking pretty good on this one until the final hurdle. Even though the OPC rebuild was done 50K miles ago, it does make you wonder what they did if it now needs rebuilding again!
