Hi

As per April 2012 edition of a Porsche Specialist Mag :-

It is expected to be based on the AUDI Q5 but will be available only in 3 door form with a much raised ride height.Apparently styling is clearly influenced by the 911 (!!!!!)

Looks like the Engineers failed to read the "specialist mag" - sure that car pictured above has 4 doors?

I will stick with the Q5 as a shopping car.

Whilst its always nice to see Porsche making the GT3, 911 Turbo etc it has to be accepted that without models like the SUVs Porsche might be in real trouble.
So be thankful that they can still make the sports cars, and invest money to make hyper cars which make very little profit over dev costs etc.
There are also the race series - incl the support races to F1. Easy to forget what all these sales support..

I have a LOI on a Macan, as an ex-997 owner I dont feel bad one bit, because I cant run a 997 right now - its not practical for me - but I still like to support the brand. TBH my only concern is VW getting greedy and trying to push margins... time will tell.

In 5 years Porsche will be like Mercedes and BMW . They already sell more suv's and saloons than sports cars .
Pity .
Thank god for mclaren
... For now. If Porsche, Lambo, Maserati, Bentley, Aston and Jaguar can go the SUV route then why not McLaren. SUV's are cash cows, every car co would love to have a runaway success like the Cayenne.

Porsche have ruined their brand image and everything the Porsche name represented has gone out the window.

Shameful!
Rubbish.

It really all went to pot in 1950, when they went mass market.

The problem is more than the cayenne . I dont mind the Cayenne but they are just making too many non sports cars . The Panamera , The Cayenne , then the Cajun followed by the incoming Pajun . When people talked about brand dilution I said they were being stupid and if the cayenne lets Porsche build gt3rs's then its a good thing .
Its all getting a bit much now though .

I agree, but for how long?

The parent company doesnt exactly have a good track record in delivering driver's cars (unless the driver is more interested in the material the buttons are made of than what the thing is like to drive)

Where will all the BMW M people(ie me) go then?

Are Merc still working on NA V8s with cylinder deactivation instead of turbos for economy?

I think DFI will keep us in NA engines for the current and next generation.

After that it depends where the EU takes the CO2 limits... if the EU even exists then!

AMG also has (SLK55) a new V8 NA with cylinder deactivation (4 cyliner on low loads).

Mclaren have delivered a car in the spirit of Porsche for me . It's form over function , daily usable , still exciting , well built , not a bling ferrari , hasn't missed a beat and its still rare . 911 is now a mass produced gt car and I made no mention of gearboxes ?
The manual gearbox will die not because of Porsche or mclaren but because people are just not buying the damn things .

Re the gearbox, I would agree - PDK is in every measurable way "better" than a manual BUT it would be a shame if those who enjoy a third peddle no longer had the choice.

Another nail into the coffin of the Porsche brand. I am waiting for the moment they offer heightenend suspension for the 991...
Wrong! Whilst I won't be buying one of these it's pretty obvious that the sales will finance the good stuff that I will want to buy.

Porsche are keeping themselves alive and would, without stretching the metaphor too far, be buried along time ago without entering these segments.

Hmm... perhaps not great news if true... Porsche are looking to launch the car at Frankfurt which is about 11 months away...
I was hoping for Geneva which is in March.
Also - there is talk of no 4 cyl engines for the first 12 - 18 months. Not that I am bothered by that as I wanted a V6 anyway but it might hurt sales.

Thoughts?

Gives me a bit longer to save up.

Had my name down for a while now (should be top of the list at OPC?). Hoping launch car will be the 308hp v6 diesel that is in the Audi SQ5. 0-60 in 5s should get the kids to school on time smile

Likely to replace our family workhorse X5 with a Macan, though will be interesting to see what 2nd hand Cayenne prices will be like by then for a 2011/12 highly spec'd Cayenne diesel.

FWIW, the thought of a Macan with a decent 4 pot turbo-diesel doesn't frighten me as much as I thought it would. Providing supply is limited, I might actually see myself looking at one as a practical daily. The combination of rock-solid residuals (limited supply...) and economy + decent enough drive and cabin for around £35k - £40k appeals.

Personally, I will want to see where a well specced Panamera is in 12 months time, especially the Petrol.

Read that Porsche have recently revised the projected Macan production from 45,000 to 75,000 units p.a.!

It means Porsche SUVs and saloons will outnumber sports cars 2:1.

I've thought for a while that Porsche are now at the position that BMW was in the 80's and 90's. Prestige and sporty and every-day rare. Not necessarily a bad thing - more choice for more people.

BMW are now the Ford of the 90's.
