but thats the rub, is it really? is it any more of a track toy than any other cayman, boxster or non GT3 911?ignoring the engine, a GT3 is beefed up in many many areas to make it suitable for the rigours of track use. the cayman R doesnt see any of this type of improvements applied, its is no more suitable for life on a track than any other cooking porsche. it could have been, there was no technical reason stopping porsche doing so but they didnt.
ofcourse how suitable one views the porsche line for track use is entirely subjective but the cayman R was not designed and built to be a notch above.

Difference is in lap times. On road there is no much difference between S and R. Of course you can say that R is just improved version of S.Edited by Raitzi on Saturday 5th May 12:24

Black edition S with a LSD will do the trick - same power as the R and no silly door straps & halfords spoiler/side stickers.Edited by Raitzi on Saturday 5th May 12:24

Cayman R is a track toy. A lot slower than new carrera S but can be faster than a lot of "last gen" icons on tight track. If you do not care about lap times CR might not worth the premium.

I may be a little biased (OK - I am very biased) but I don't see the difference between the majority of CRs over a well specced CS. Unless the CR has been specced with no aircon, no stereo, sports exhaust, PCCB etc it won't be lighter or more different from a standard CS. A CR with the above and PDK would also make a reasonable alternative to a GT3 if you didn't want a manual transmission. The nearest 997 would be a GTS but I can't see it being as much fun as the CR I have described.
However, most CRs have aircon and a stereo, some don't even have the carbon backed buckets. My own car has PDK, buckets and PCCB. I suspect it is no heavier than many CRs due to the weight saving on the seats. How much more is steel vs aluminium door skins and proper door handles vs red ribbons for God's sake? Another plus is that PASM gives the choice between being 'on it' and trundling around, something the CR can't do.
If you want a GT3 there probably is no real alternative to the 997 version.
But after all is said and done, the CR and a well specced CS are great cars in their own right. You don't need to be a driving God to extract every last ounce of performance from one and that to me is the appeal. I can use more of the available performance in relative safety without risking myself or others more of the time. Something I couldn't do in a 996 C4 let alone a GT3.
alu doors save 15 kg. the other gubbins and carbon buckets save another 25 kg... stereo + ac save 15 kg... there you have it 55 kg.... PCCBs save 7 lbs or 3.2 kg, PDK adds 30kgHowever, most CRs have aircon and a stereo, some don't even have the carbon backed buckets. My own car has PDK, buckets and PCCB. but the cr is not defined by just numbers alone nor by looks. it is not trying to be a gt3, it is just a value for money modern porsche for 50k

GT doors - Is that such a big deal?
No, that is just weight saving of 15kg. Cayman R just seems to be more than sum of its parts. Car of the year titles just do not come because aluminium doors or any other specific things Most do not want caymans because they are not 911s. Also price of the R has been very close to base carrera. And of course part of porsche owners buy the cars to be more status symbols than for actual track usage, and "track oriented" car that is not even "real Porsche" is hard to sell.

So will it ever become a classic? Its got a decent spec inc satnav, aircon, pdk box, universal audio interface + phone interface, PCM, park assist, sound package plus, sport chrono package and porsche tracker the only bit i was wary with is its fitted with bucket seats but once in them they are comfortable.
Its got 5k on it and was the demo, 3.9% finance, 2.5years warranty left, 2 new rear tyres to go on, new stickers on the front bumper due to some stone chips, also looks like they will do me Gap insurance for £200 and a full tank of fuel and my plate swap cost.
The best bit is the cost after the car was £59k new 6 months ago it is a lot less now.
All in all the best buying experience i have had!!!!
Picking it up next Thursday so only 1 crappy phone pic, my plates will go on next week.
