Was behind a brand new r8 at the weekend and he figured that my 2004 996tt was no match for his shiney new toy. I could see the disappointment in his mirrors when I was sticking with him. God I love my turbo.

A 996 Turbo will be noticeably quicker than an R8 V8...

Very disappointed that you didn't get him into your mirrors...best way of avoiding stone chips too!

Do you wear very powerful glasses then, or just tailgate?

V8 R8 is nothing special, it's damn quick but only Carrera S quick, a 996 TT will have no issue.

Yep, sold my 996tt for my r8. Turbo is much quicker but only until you get to the twisties.

996 Turbo is a great car, but after driving both I would still have the R8.

Turbo is quicker all round.
Much i love the R8 the sound track and Audi's in general they are 2 cars i wouldn't or couldn't compare.
Its a car you would compare with the 997 C2S, but even then i'd pick the latter.

OP states he was behind a brand new R8, so must have been V10

Could still have been the V8, albeit with the S-tronic double clutch gearbox which would've upped the performance a little.

Cant have been the v8, i can match one of those in my 275bhp 993 ... not very quick, esp. Low down

Fair point. Seems to be supported by

and

http://fastestlaps.com/cars/porsche_996_turbo.html

Audi's a little quicker on the shorter circuits, but 996tt quicker on the Nordschleife.

Well i guess im qualified to compare both as i just got rid of my new at time R8 V10 which i had since June'11 and bought a brand new 997 Turbo S Cabriolet (see pics).

The R8 V10 could certainly keep up with most top end cars (those not chipped!) and was a great car. The V10 had a great sound, was fantastic around the track, was nice looking car but it did get just too much attention on the road. The attention was 99% of time always positive but certainly was a 'look at me' car.

I change my cars every 2 years so was looking for a new toy and decided Porsche was for me after looking at the McLaren but couldn't justify it in current climate.

Now I've had the Turbo S for 4 weeks i can say it was the best decision i took, its a great all round car, performance, comfort, more space then R8 for luggage etc. What really surprised me was on taking the below pic of the 2 cars together, my mate drove the R8 with me in the Porsche and getting back into the R8 after was just like getting into any Audi...it just didn’t have the same emotion as the inside of the Porsche and the heritage that goes with it. It was only after i purchased the Porsche that i then realised where the R8 was lacking. Also you pay a premium on the cars performance but every other Audi S line is now being designed to match the R8 performance wise...so doesn’t make it so special.

The R8 was a great car but after past 4 weeks, I now know i made the right choice to move to Porsche as already ive had 3 Porsche invites to represent them at Carrera Cup, Paris and Silverstone for the 911 50th celebrations and never got treated like this at Audi...but then again they are just a mass manufacture, Porsche are rather more special.

Owned an r8v8 ,996turbo and 997 turbo

If take the r8 every time ,don't really care if it's slower in a straight line .

Interesting priorities.......

Also, you might like to check out the relationship between the two manufacturers. Do you really believe they're that different or is that in the eye of the beholder? And surely the R8/10 is a much less mass produced car than any road going Porsche?

Love both vehicles.
I'd consider an R8 but 2 seats rules it out unfortunately.

For me the R8 would be far slower than my 996tt - once I'd got somewhere, I'd need to drop off my wife, go home to collect my son, then drive back again!

Otherwise I'd definitely have considered an R8 V8, regardless of whether it was slower or quicker in a straight line or around the corners. It's still a lovely looking car with a great sounding, high revving V8.
