My apologies if this is a re-post, but I've not seen anything about it on here.

Porsche currently has a full postcode nav update available for PCM-3 equipped cars at a special offer price of £149.99 inc. VAT. I had the update done on my 997S.2 and my other half's Boxster last week at Porsche Bolton.

The update gives you brand new maps, full 7-digit postcode entry, a nifty drop-down menu in the map view and some new zoom options. To install the update, the OPC also has to update your PCM software to the latest version - as this is done within the special-offer price, it suddenly becomes a real bargain! (The nav update alone was almost £500 pre-offer).

Bolton told me that dealers are complaining to Porsche about the amount of workshop time these updates are taking (relative to what they can charge) so the offer's unlikely to last very long.

Take advantage whilst you can.

This shouldn't be charged for at all. My June 12 991 didn't have it and I certainly won't be paying. I'll use the free one that came with my iphone.

Thanks for the info, just booked mine in. They said it costs them ~£170 for each licence plus 5 hours for job so it is a def loss leader

Definitely is, yes. It took them approx. 4 hours to install new PCM software then the nav update to my 997.

You got to hand it to them though - they're not taking the loss lying down. They rang me the following day to tell me they forget to mention my front disks needed replacing..... rolleyes

The software update might take 4 hours but surely they don't need to pay a technician to sit and watch the screen while it happens, so they aren't really making a loss!

Hold up.... Are you telling me that they have a guy sat in your car watching a progress bar move right showing "number of Porsche minutes remaining" for 5 hours!!! ? Seriously WTF?

How can the job be anything more than "click to upgrade" - then sod off for the rest of the day and comeback and "click OK to finish"

Ha! No - much more involved than that. He has to change disks about 5 times in 4 hours too. Poor sod's run off his feet going back and forth to the tea room... smile

Joking apart, Bolton were more concerned that a workshop bay was in use for 4 hours for £FA, not that a technician was whistling a tune all afternoon rather than working.

Why they couldn't have done the updates outside, I've no idea though....

I am not defending the process - just a bit of info from the other side of the fence:
Every car must have a VAL created on the tester and a battery charger attached for the duration of the update; the licence produces an enabling code on Porsche's system which is then displayed and must be entered into the vehicle. If your car is an early version (SW V 1.41) then the unit needs 3 update discs prior to the 4 map data discs to complete the job. Add to the mix that the system regularly times out and is not consistent (disc 1 takes X minutes - isn't possible to predict) and there is a window of time when the next disc is required before the system resets and the progress is lost then yes an operative must watch the progress to save wasting time - a paradox if ever there was one! The longest one has taken 6hrs but most of the time was spent resetting the PCM after it froze. For 150 quid it's a bargain; for cars released after 7 digit was available there is a consideration process - talk to your OPC reasonably and you might be surprised.

Having understood the process myself and decided to have it done, as Pope says this is not inconsiderable in time, effort and complexity in terms of getting codes etc...a bit of a faff for OPC. I wasn't offered it whilst mine has been in this week, but was offered new brakes etc and thanks to OP and this thread I was able to request it....but can see how this isn't much of a revenue earner. Def the bargain of the year...

How can it be a bargin. .

The whole PCM thing is st to not have full post code in a newer touch screen car.

As for taking 6 hours, just goes to show what old tech these systems are that you cannot just flash one from a flash drive in a few minutes.

Yes I,ll get it done because it will never be this cheap again, I just feel when you spec a 2.5k system and porsche make 13k per car sale, we have to pay to get a working sat nav.

My early 997 Gen 2 is V1.4.

(You can quickly check your version - push the INFO button | Options | PCM Settings | Display | Software Version.)

Ordered I today from OPC Glasgow - service dept had never heard of it so they're going to check with parts & call me back. Sigh...
