Hi - I was paranoid when I read all about 997.1 engine problems. Mine (2007 4s cab) has gone 45000 miles. Uses some oil (1000km per liter) but had engine checked and no scoring and compression good. Goes great.
I hate to add to your paranoia, but I'd st myself if it was using 1 litre per 1000km. Mine was doing that per 1000 miles before it st itself. Hardly touches a drop since the rebuild.

The 997.1 is brilliant despite the inherent problems. We live in an age when everything is expected to be perfect all of the time. Engineering, by it's nature, is rarely perfect. I know as I test 'design engineering' on a daily basis. This car is great. Yes it can bite you in the arse, and wallet, but do you want a bmw 320d relationship with your 911?
The 997.1 will become a modern classic and it's faults, real and exaggerated, will be ignored and accepted and embraced.
Here, here! Well said!

I have owned my 997.1 for a year after waiting years to get one. It is absolutely brilliant with, touch wood, absolutely no problems in 6,000 miles. I have learned over many years of owning interesting cars, including an M3, Mercedes SLK 32 AMG, Honda S2000, Triumph TR3 etc.etc., that the inherent nature of blogs is that you hear all the problems. The vast majority of owners who don’t experience problems don’t blog! The 997.1 is a well engineered future classic. Of course every single one will experience some problem in its lifetime, it’s a car after all! Keep things in perspective. Having said all this why am I looking at blogs on 997.1 faults? Because problems on these cars are very expensive to fix and I’m paranoid!

I had my 2005 (55) C2S for two years and in that time had a radiator fan issue, air con leak, coffin arms replaced, exhaust bolts replaced and the gear cable snapped with it stuck in third gear.

Personally I loved the the car and still think the 997 looks good by comparison to current Porkers.

I had the thermostat upgrade when I got the car with 36k miles on the clock and always warmed to 85/90 degrees before pressing on. When driving normally I made sure the engine didn't labour under low revs.

The problem for me is that I came to conclusion that the engine design is floored. Clearly the majority of these engines by and large are not going to reach 100 - 150k miles without having bore scoring issues and although I enjoyed the ownership, with 50k miles on it at the time of sale, I couldn't help thinking when I sold the car that 'i'd got away with it'.

For me (rightly or wrongly) the ownership experience was lessened by the spectre of major issues and as much as some people want to bury their heads in the sand, the issues are real and given time I suspect will effect most cars out there as the mileages increase.

No issues with mine at all, it's a fantastic car. The bore scoring reputation of a few cars has dropped their values into the twenties making them superb value and the values won't drop any more. I bet there are countless drivers of 911s out there who haven't even heard of borescoring.

They look amazing for the £20k-£25k you can buy one for! I think a lot of potential owners of the entry level 997 at that kind of money have read up about them and are put off a little like me.

No problems with my 2007 4S. Owned from June 2015. Condensers have gone but that's considered wear and tear. Had two new tyres and servicing otherwise just fuel and insurance costs.

I'm in the mindset as others of adding a low temp thermostat & 3rd Radiator and oil and filter change annually regardless.

If it came to it the car would get rebuilt.
