Just started to look for a 996 on a budget. Having looked on various sites it's clear that there isn't a great deal of choice of colours. Silver, black and grey are the prominent colours. I guess it's the sign of the popular colours at the time.
Are any other "louder" colours less desirable now or is it the other way around?

There are some awful (imho) metallic greens and turquoise, but also the odd red, yellow and dark metallic blue. Don't miss out on a good 996 because of the colour though. There aren't enough good ones to be picky depending on price and spec.
My uncle told me years ago that green cars were unlucky as he had one and had a couple of accidents in that car. I've always remembered that. I've always thought that sports cars should be red or black. Sound advice on buying on condition rather than spec and colour.
I like green cars; Ragussa on an Audi RS2 looks fab, as does Goodwood on a B5 RS4 (much more classy and more in keeping with the Q-car ethos for me). Not always easy to resell, though.
However, I do think they merge into (green) backgrounds sometimes, as a Postman once pulled out on me in my Oxford Green E39 M5 once (causing it to be written off) in such a crass manner that I had to believe him when he said he just simply did not see me.
Good luck with the search, but don't totally discount black or silver; they were popular for a reason.

996 is one of the few cars that look really good in white, rare as hens teeth though as are Guards Red & Speed Yellow.
I guess a wrap is one option if you find the right car but aren't keen on the colour? Be a shame to miss out on a great car just because you can't find the colour you like.

^^^ yes that was a yellow C4.
I too wanted rare/low colour (red, yellow, Zanzibar, white, vesuvio grey etc) but good luck finding one!
My 'must-haves' were mk1 C2 manual, GT3 Aerokit, black sports seats and not black/blue exterior.
Bought a Arctic Silver in the end. Even Arctic Silver there are different shades; 1998 car looks more 'grey' whereas 2001 a bit brighter / more 'gold'.

That last one is Rainforest Green which although I don't like green one of my TIPEC Members had one & it grew on me over the years. One of our other kent members had an Ocean Jade metallic with neophyte green interior. Although very Marmite on the occasion I drove it I couldn't believe how much attention it got.

I think white is the worst 996 colour, its awful. But, its subjective I guess.I guess a wrap is one option if you find the right car but aren't keen on the colour? Be a shame to miss out on a great car just because you can't find the colour you like.

Lapis Blue is lovely. Savannah, less so.
I can understand that statement. I think the slate and black look optimal, but the lapis is vibrant and gorgeous in the sun - a rich purpley blue and the baby poo offsets it very well. It looks very pretty and is finding much more favour of late. This is perhaps not what turbo owners want. Better on a cab, perhaps? Savannah works best with lapis; charcoal grey works well with ocean; and black with midnight. So there we are.Gassing Station | Porsche General | Top of Page | What's New | My Stuff
