Being an al-afresco addict I have fallen in love with the new Targa. It will be my first Porsche but am a bit overwhelmed with the prospect as it represents a huge leap in performance & cost. To date have never driven or owned anything more powerful than 250BHP or worth more than £35k new. Not convinced I'll ever use or need the power, just love the idea of the car.
Have prepared my ideal specification which includes most options resulting in nearly £130 price. Money is not an issue but sensibility is.
Local Porsche dealer not exactly falling over themselves to allow me a solo test drive without some pushy salesman blathering in my ear. I hear reports that the cabin is blustery when roof panel removed so will want an extended drive when not raining. Perhaps I have been spoiled by lesser vehicles with their superbly sheltered cabins such as Mazda MX-5's, Honda S2000's, Audi A3 cabriolets & Mercedes SLK's.
Advice & opinions sought please.

If your spending £130k i assume you started with a GTS , which is the right choice .

Having owned a Gen 1, I can say it was a fantastic car . I didn't have any concerns with buffeting . Do it !

I think your problem will be finding an OPC with a demo....I imagine when the GTS's come through there might be some around. They will definitely have one at the Silverstone PEC...an OPC can arrange for you to test drive there. If they won't do that ( it does cost them) find an OPC that will. We've got a Cayenne on order...OPC was worried my wife needed to drive the V8 Diesel before we'd order and offered a test drive at PEC so they can do it.

Just do it. As for solo test drives don't be daft. Insurance company. Yes we gave the chap the keys to the car and he drove off on his own and never came back. Bit like when the missus said to me. I'll drive the Bugatti Veyron as long as you sit next to me. Ain't going to happen

I had a Panamera 4S for a day as a month ago. Two months before that my wife and I were given a Cayenne Hybrid for a couple of hours as a test drive (no salesman)...-and when my 997 GTS was in having its MOT in November the sales guy sorted me out with a Boxster S as a loan car.

I've read plenty of times in other threads about people getting cars for extended test drives. Like here. http://www.pistonheads.com/gassing/topic.asp?h=0&a...

They can only give solo test drives on cars that are already taxed according to the OPC I just bought a car from. If it has trade plates, then they are not allowed to. (Or if they don't trust you...)

I test drove a Targa back to back with the convertible and the difference in buffeting was huge - i couldn't talk to the passenger in the Targa.

Maybe the convertible is so good (i've driven ours to Denmark at 120mph+ with the roof down with no probs) that it just makes the Targa seem bad in comparison though..?

So i'd suggest a test drive, but they seem to be really rare these Targas!

So it'll be service department loan cars and demonstrators that are actually taxed. I think that's your problem in getting one of these as a day loan car unless the OPC can get from Porsche GB or you can go to PEC. The only people that would be allowed to run a demonstrator like as expensive as a Targa would be the DP or Head of Sales etc....and they generally run Cayenne or Panamera Hybrids as their tax loading is much, much lower than it would be for running a 911.

Err not really. My last one I phoned to book a week before. When I arrived they took copy of my license gave me the key said they close at 6 please bring it back before then with the same amount of fuel you left with.

Test drove a 718 Boxster S on my own for the whole day last weekend and taking out a Macan GTS for the whole day this Saturday on my own. Did not bat an eyelid, just took a copy of my licence and handed over the keys.

If I ordered a new Porsche, the Targa would be my choice (GTS if I stretch it). It looks like the most versatile Porsche at the moment.

The 991 Targa 4 GTS weighs 135kg more than a 991 Coupe GTS, which is the equivalent of having two 10.5 stone adults in the car with you at all times. smile

so in other words SFA in a 400+ horsepower car.
Except you would assume that weight is predominantly relatively high in the car so would be felt more than 100kg sitting next to you in the passenger seat! That said the 991.2's with the turbo'd engines torque would handle the weight better than the older cars.

Would be fantastic to drive the different models back to back...I suppose you can do that at PEC.

I was allowed a solo test drive in a Cayman GTS for 2 days. I guess it depends on the dealer. I was introduced to my local dealer by a mate who knows them well

I am also in this place at the moment, however I am finding my self leaning toward the 991.1 targa gts rather than a new one. I know the 991.2 has slight improvements across the board, however having the NA 3.8 and the saving of about £15k.

Any thoughts?

I love the look of the Targa, really beautiful thing! There doesnt seem to be many available at the moment and the prices seem very high (could almost get a Turbo S for similar money)

I have been looking for 991 targas as well and there aren't many around. The 991.1 GTS seems to be the one to go for but the high residuals make it more attempting to order a new one it seems.
