I'm interested to see where people think the value is in the Porsche market.

I have a manual 996 turbo X50 with 60k on the clock. Loo at the classifieds it's probably £50-55k.

The alternatives at this price could be....

- 1987-89 3.2 Carrera with 60k+ miles
- 1991-93 manual 964 c2 coupe with 90k+ miles
- 2010-12 987 Spyder with 6k+ miles
- 2010-12 987 Cayman R with 6k+ miles
- 2007 997.1 GT3 with 25k mile (plus £30-35k)
- 2016 981 Spyder with 1k miles (plus £30k)

Having owned 2x 3.2 Carrera when they were £16k they don't look great value.

Interested to hear which cars see as good value (or reasonable value) and why?

It has to be 986/987 Caymans and Boxsters these days, surely? A proper engine in the NA flat six and something for everyone's budget.

I don't see the point in buying a 6K mile Cayman R. You'll be paying 5 to 10K more than the average price for a car you can't drive in the hope that it will go up in value...which it probably won't.

The value in the Porsche market is probably in the car you already own - as you are finding, there isn't much else for the money that gives so much for such relatively good value. All the other cars on your list are excellent, but not such good value I reckon. Personally I would like a 997.1 GT3, but I am not willing to part with my X50 in order to get one.

IMHO your valuation may be more of a retail price though, the "puff" seems to have gone out of the 996 turbo market in the last 12 months with attention moving to the turbo'd 997s.

I'd keep what you have and wait to see if the ships sail back in. Anything remotely rare, special, limited, different, motorsport-orientated, etc etc and you'll be buying in at the top of the market.

But, if I had to buy a Porsche with similar budget today... I'd either go for the best 997.2 C2S I could find, or (and you'll need to increase the budget by £5k) the cheapest 991.1 - even if it was a bog-standard C2. The 991 although due for replacement soon is still top of it's game and you'd need £100k+ to buy a new one today. Boxster and Cayman don't do much for me so it'd have to be a 911.

Buy some thing you will enjoy driving and just cross your fingers.

Best car in that list is a 987.2 Spyder for both driving and values on the up.

Old cars can rob you of a £15k refresh's even older ones can be double that.

Over the last five years, the Boxsters have just dropped pick up one now for 5k .

A lot of car for the money and huge fun factor to boot.

80's cars still high with value with the nostalgia factor keeping prices high.

Either way you drive you pay,for your pleasure. I knew certain bills, would come along in my long term ownership of my old car.
Just had the gearbox done 3k . It was near 100k so it was due to be done anyway.
Cayennes the milkcow that saved the Porsche brand at the right time.
So many on LPG now as prices have hit rock bottom.
Many owners forget, about running cost like brakes, pads ,cooler pipes to name a few bits.

At 20% or less of your budget a 986S has to be stonking value. You can spend some money on mods and maintenance and still be comfortably under 25%.

The value in the Porsche market isn't in the 911.

Boxsters and Caymans are cheap for various reasons.

Of the OP's list only the 3.2 Carrera, 964 C2 and 7 GT3 are of interest to me and they'e have to be no more than 30,000 miles to purchase good rust free examples. That would mean all three would cost circa £85-90k.

Was having a look through classifieds and this caught my eye. Lovely thing for late to mid 50's and so useable. Looks and spec has the x factor for me. Someone got a bargain.

This would be my second choice at this budget level but not as useable IMO.

This is what I'd have bought for £30k

http://www.portiacraft.com/car-detail.php?id=2536

At £20k it would have been a similar condition 996 C2

Seems 996 is where the value is in the 911 range

Which is exactly what I did a few weeks ago (well, not in quite as good condition). My thought processes were many and varied. As I am not a squillionaire, upside potential was a consideration. As was the fact that I don't need, want or like a car with factory fitted sat nav, infotainment screens, buttons on the steering wheel, hard drives, LED daytime running lights etc etc so that seemed to restrict me to the 996 and prior. A few weeks in and no regrets so far. They are just a lovely car and even the boggo C2 feels special.

If you found a good low miles C2 you've done very well. Its the pick of the 996 range for me. You should start your own thread with pics wink

Was out in the 996 turbo on Sunday and after 5 years it still puts a massive smile on on face.

A nice manual 987.2 Boxster S is probably the best value used Porsche in the current market.

Reliable, great drive, n/a, no rust and reasonable price.

+1 good entry level as well. Trips like LeMans bring the biggest smile for me.

having had a modded low mileage 996 Turbo for a couple of years and now having recently driven my mates early 3.4 C2 with factory sports kit ( suspension & lsd ) .. the C2 is actualy much more of a fun car to chuck around the lanes . It was one of the few cars I've driven where I didn't actually want to hand the keys back. Genuinely surprised myself at how much I liked it. That would be where my £20K or less would be going.

.... apart from that , i think 'value' is subjective and is all about what brings a smile to your face or you enjoy driving ... for some a £130K GT3 is great value , for others a £5k boxster.

Both my Porsches, at current values most would think are poor value, for me they are exactly what I want & love about Porsche and thus great value to me smile ( I do have the urge for a convertible though )
