Porsche 996 Turbo
Discussion
I did 249 miles home to Scotland on Thursday through driving rain and the car was immense sitting at 90ish the whole way
I’m over in Argyll now for the week on gods own roads and gradually winding the revs up as I get used to it - the control the car has is shocking compared to my 996 3.4 - front end feels more understeery than I expected but that a because I’ve never owned a 4x4 turbo before so I have to learn to trust it !
But my god this engine .... have both the kids seats back in it, my son loves the power

When I had my (mapped to around 500hp) 996 turbo, I travelled over with a mate in his Audi R8 GT the to the Nurburgring a couple of times.
Leading or following, wet or dry, A road or Autobahn, you could barely put a cigarette paper between the two, in the real world. Both immense cars, the old 996 perhaps more so because it was doing it all nearly ten years prior to the R8. It really was the spiritual successor to the 959.

Nice memories ! Was your one an X-50 model ? Leading or following, wet or dry, A road or Autobahn, you could barely put a cigarette paper between the two, in the real world. Old skool enough to appeal to folks like me, yet modern enough to run with the new kids on the block if a little work is done to help the performance and handling.
Epic cars.

Guessing that there isnt much that can be done to lighten the 996T ?
Also, is the rear aero spoiler lighter than the oe one ?
Stainless exhaustAlso, is the rear aero spoiler lighter than the oe one ?
Lighter seats. The nomex buckets look nice.
RWD conversion and fit an LSD
Carbon bonnet
Carbon roof and sunroof removal
Take out spare wheel from frunk
LiPo battery
Centre console delete and remove PCM
Rear wiper delete
There's a guy who lightened his 996 on 911uk, he really went to town on it, but got loads of weight out. Worth a read, project leightenbrau or something.

Agree re lighter seats, although the sports seats are lighter than the std seats. Lighter seats. The nomex buckets look nice.

( One Recarro Pole Position is less than half the weight of an E46 M3s boat anchor seats )
Just bought in a 2005 Clio 182, which had been part prepared as a track day car. Spent a few hours today putting the sound proofing, carpets and the rear seats back in, to make it a bit more cosy for the winter, but omg is this stuff heavy or what !!

Have the geo looked at - my 997tt is more pointy (although it also feels more planted) than my old 997 c2s, and it's just down to setup. When I got the 997tt it was all over the place and that was poor setup as well!I’m over in Argyll now for the week on gods own roads and gradually winding the revs up as I get used to it - the control the car has is shocking compared to my 996 3.4 - front end feels more understeery than I expected but that a because I’ve never owned a 4x4 turbo before so I have to learn to trust it !

Well I’ve done 500 miles this week on the best roads Argyll has to offer - in love with the car, I am using full throttle now and the thrust and traction, eg on long uphill bumpy sections is absolutely bonkers. Four up, with the weans in the back
It feels safe as houses battering along a bumpy a road at 90 on a cold damp morning. Safest overtaking I’ve ever had as well
What a car!
It’s also absolutely filthy and seems to look all the better for it ....

Done properly not long ago and I’ve got the printouts - think I was going too fast as it’s been great all week for me! It is something I’ll get done each year though, as I agree it’s vital I've had the car just shy of a month now and I've done about 1200 miles in it - the learning curve has been wonderful ... from initially being scared of putting my foot down above 4,000rpm to learning how hard I need to prod the throttle to heal and toe properly!
I absolutely love it - did 250 miles of horrific motorway today and it feels utterly safe to be sitting in it. The bose stereo upgrade is magnificent. Had to buy blank CDs so I could burn some music - I'll replace the change with a USB thingy at some point but keep the OEM head unit, as it sounds great and looks the part. Love that the windows seal better than my old one, makes it much nicer when driving fast on the motorway and also much easier to demist when the mornings are cold as it's not steaming up as bad.
I have a major annoyance that google seems to agree with - the powered clutch. I might ask Mike about sorting that at the next service, if it's not too ruinous - I too have suffered from several inexplicably bad 1/2nd gear changes as you can't feel the biting point, but I think I'm getting there
Anyway. Over the moon. Cant stop looking back when I park it and no longer do I look at any other Porsche on the road with envy - I've got a "proper" one now, and it's my daily driver....
Oh, crapped myself today after going for petrol when the computer came up with "Check engine oil!" - I thought it was low before I realised it's just the car nagging you to check
