Usual suspects like the AA and RAC are coming out at £220+ for the year, anyone got any other suggestions? Or ideally a policy that will cover 2 cars so we can include our Disco 4

Get a Nationwide Flexplus account. Stick £2.5k in the account to get the 3% interest (worth £6 something per month) that takes the net cost down to about £6.50 per month.

This gives you full Euro breakdown (any car), family worldwide travel insurance inc winter sports, mobile phone cover for about 4 phones and mid market foreign exchange with no commissions. Works well if you have cars over 15 years old too!

I've always used the euro breakdown cover offered by my insurers. Usually between £20-£50 pa

..... And having had to use it twice over the last 15 years the service has always been superb

I thought that the AA had an age limit on their euro breakdown.

I too have it with my Classic insure, previously Classic Line and now Locktons, which includes it in the premium.

Yeah, I used to get it through lockton with their policy as well, but switched to manning this year as they were £700 cheaper for a 993 and 997 GTS combined for very similar cover (unlimited TDs etc). Actually £900 really as lockton required a tracker sub for the GTS which is £200/year and manning don't.

Lockton had always been exemplary over the 6 years I was with them, and I don't mind paying a bit more, but the gap was just too large this year.

Mainstream breakdown services are hopeless for Euro cover if your car is more than about 5 minutes old.

As above, either get it via one of the bank account premier account offerings or as an add on to insurance. I've got a multi-car policy with Hiscox which, while maybe a little more expensive than it might be elsewhere, gives me Euro breakdown cover on something the AA wouldn't touch with a bargepole, insures me to drive any car & also insures anyone over 30 to drive my cars with my consent. Speak to the good people at AIB insurance....

If you go with AA or RAC, don't forget to go through Quidco - big saving to be made smile

Okay so due to time constraints (not able to open that Nationwide account before we go!) I've plumped for RescueMyCar.com which will cover me and my other half in any car up to 25 years old (993 scrapes in, checked with them!) for the princely sum of £128 or so which seems very reasonable.

I have a membership for a the ADAC (the German version of the AA).

They're not massively keen for us Brits to join up, but they do allow it. It costs about 90 Euros a year and it covers you here in the UK too (they use the AA). It is full relay and recovery, although if you car breaks down overseas, the standard procedure is to send you home via eurotunnel/train or plane (they insist on first class train travel!) and the car then returns later on a low-loader (it can be a few weeks later as they collect a truck load of cars and bring them back in one big delivery).

I've called them out twice so far.

The first time I was driving a friend's knackered old Skoda Octavia to the Alps and back on a mountain biking trip. The waterpump expired in Rheims. The car was picked up and taken to a garage who decided they couldn't be bothered to fix it. We were both put up in a hotel for the night with subsistance payment and then travelled home first class by train the next day. The car (which did not belong to me) was delivered to our garage of choice 2 weeks later.

More recently, my newly bought Fiat 500 broke down at 2:30am on my way to the airport. They sent out the AA who picked it up and took it to a local garage where it was sorted out later that day.

If i remember rightly, i also pay a small supplement for my wife to be covered too... the cover is for you in whatever car you are travelling in.

I've just remembered I've used them in the past and all, dopey me....big road trip round Europe for a few months where I did use them. Think I may be able to cancel the stuff I bought above, if so, will sign up with ADAC as they were very good as I recall.

Edit: how did you sign up? Won't take a UK address online. When I used them before I got my mum to ring up (she's German)
