The idea of paying £200+ to do a meet and greet has never interested me...but... I am going to the G3 tour of Satriani/Petrucci/Roth and as they are 3 guitar greats and you would get to see their guitars it is mildly tempting.

Because the ticket is approx £50 the extra in this case is £163.

Anyone ever paid extra for this kind of thing?

I paid £250 a year or so ago to go along to a Gary Numan rehearsal session in London. There were about a dozen of us sat in the studio watching him practice for about 3 hours. Plenty of time to speak to him and the band in between sessions and he was happy to sign stuff.

I'm not a massive GN fan, I thought it would be interesting, which it was. He has a nice line in self-deprecating humour. It probably helped that I wasn't giddy with excitement as it made it easy to chat to him.

Some of the others there did look a bit obsessive. And old.

never meet your heroes - they have feet of clay like the rest of us.

Never been tempted myself.

Think it depends what you want out of it. I'd imagine at something like a G3, you'll be a number on a list of many, so probably a quick handshake, exchange of words, thanks for coming and perhaps a photo if there's a hundred or so people also on VIP.

Whether that's worth an extra £x is up to you.

I've done it at smaller gigs, saw Skid Row a couple of months ago and there were 4 other VIPs, we were able to get in to watch the soundcheck and then a meet and greet. Always been a big fan, and it was £60, so was worth it to me.

Took an old Charvel down with me, asked them if they'd mind signing it - they were all fine with it, and just had a pretty normal chat with them about gear, their tour, what they're up to, how things are going etc. Couple of photos, handshakes and they were off about 15 mins later to do some press stuff.

My Charvel now hangs up in the house (ie I now need to buy something else with a Floyd) but I'd imagine there'd be people at a G3 turning up with Jem's JS1x's, Music Man and other stuff that you'll see on ebay a week or so later.

As an 'old' fan from '79 as much as i love the fella i am not shelling out £250 to attend a meet and greet. Btw back in the old days you could wait until after the gig and have a quick chat and autograph etc. It cost nothing but a wait for a while whilst swapping stories with other fans.

...yes, some are very obsessive and are currently shelling out their hard earned cash to go to his concerts where he is backed by an orchestra. Bloody awful idea. I didn't get into his stuff in '79 too hear AFE etc. played by a bloody orchestra. And i really wish those fans that believe he can do no wrong had actually been honest and said what a sh*t idea it is. And if you disagree just remember Metallica's S&M. It was downhill all the way from there....

I'm with you here KJ, did plenty of waiting around after gigs etc as a youngster and "met" plenty of bands and agree with your sentiments totally. I can understand why some bands do it now with reduced revenues from the usual streams but I'd guess they don't really want to be there prior to a gig as much as they may feign interest in meeting the fans. That would be my problem, just feels a bit wrong (to me) paying to meet someone for a fleeting few seconds...£250 is a lot for some signed stuff and a quick photo.

I've been a GN fan since 79 too, absolutely love his new stuff as well as the classic 79-81 period but apart "Down in the Park" I'm struggling to think what could sound better with an orchestra. I really like the new arrangements of the old stuff (Metal etc) but the rest with an orchestra..er no thanks.

Gary Numan comes across as a really genuine bloke and a far cry from those early years, I genuinely hope his current wave of success continues but I think the orchestra thing is a bit too "Spinal Tap" for me.

To answer the OP though, no I wouldn't spend money out on a meet and greet but maybe it's just age and knowing seeing them live at a gig is enough for me.

Did a meet and greet with Gary Numan a few years ago cost £90 which was not to bad, there was 15 of us and we watch the sound check and then went upstairs for a chat, was ok but I wouldn't pay much more than that.

In contrast I paid £25 to meet and greet with The Skids last year, it was so informal and really good they even asked you what song would you like them to play - well worth £25.00.
