Why is the 4wd 911 wider at the rear than the 2wd version ?

I know it's got slightly wider rear tyres, but why is that ? Wouldn't the fact it's 4wd mean it has traction from all 4 wheels, therefore not needing extra traction from the rears.

Following that logic then, the 2wd ought to be wider at the rear.

Either it's just marketing, or I'm missing some logic here.

Which generation 911?
Not all generations had the 4wd version with a wider rear end as standard.

The above. Other than that, possibly due to the fact that pretty much the same bodyshell is shared with the 4x4 Turbos. Or just because cool.

I think it started with 996 C4S having turbo body and then moving onto 997 all the C4’s got the turbo body.

Purely a looks thing.

The 993 for example in non Turbo/Gt variants was wide body on the C2S and C4S

I've a 997 2wd, my mate a 997 4wd and he is about 15mm wider (on 305's whereas I'm on 295's)

Surprising then that Porsche did it for cosmetic reasons not engineering ones smile
