First post on here - was looking for a Porsche Forum and can see that there are lots of owners on here!

Just left a deposit on a 981 Cayman 2.7 in Guards Red. Currently driving a high spec BMW M235i which I have had since early this year. It’s fast, sounds great, comfortable, full of tech and fairy cheap to maintain - I have thoroughly enjoyed my ownership, despite it being short! My only slight criticism is that it’s almost too refined, I had an E46 M3 4-5 years ago and this felt like more of an event to drive. However, the M235i is a far superior all rounder.

I have always loved Porsche’s and it was simply the right time to get into one for me. Haven’t yet seen the car but the spec and colour was right for me - pics will have to follow, following collection. It will be a daily driver but will only be covering around 7-8k per year and I intend to keep it for 3-4 years.

Car is from an OPC:

65 reg, registered Feb 16
12,000 miles
1 owner
Remainder of 3 year warranty and then a further 2 year OPC warranty - this was important!

Spec:
  • Guards Red paint
  • PDK
  • 20 inch Carrera S wheels
  • Wheels painted in black partial (XDA)
  • Porsche sports exhaust
  • PCM
  • Bose s
  • Sport design steering wheel
  • Park assist front and rear
  • Cruise control
  • Seat heating
  • Automatically dimming mirrors
  • Smoked taillights
  • exterior mirrors lower trims pa (CNL)
  • Smoking package
Could someone please explain:

Wheels painted in black (XDA)
Park assist front and rear
Phone connectivity - I am aware I have audio connections via PCM, can a phone be used handsfree via an audio connection for incoming calls etc? Or is this just for media?

Options I would have liked (Can’t have everything):

Telephone prep
Porsche embossed on headrests
Folding ext mirrors
Carbon interior
Dual climate control

Coming from a BMW with £8,500 of options. What thinks is the Cayman not going to have that I will be accustomed to? I am aware just about everything is an option!

I intend to keep it for 3-4 years, how do people think residuals will hold up? Hoping being the last of the flat sixs, being a keen detailer and only doing 7-8k miles per year - it shouldn’t cost me an arm and leg in depreciation?

Overall, I’m very excited, although I haven’t seen this particular car, however, I have seen a 981 Cayman in Guards Red with 20’s before and I think it looked stunning! Delighted with my choice and delighted to be joining the ‘Porsche club’!

Thanks for reading!

Congrats on the purchase! I moved from a m140 to a 2.7 cayman manual 6 months ago and have done about 10k miles since.. You won't regret it (except maybe if you needed to overtake quickly)!

No phone prep means no hands free phone.

This would be a deal breaker for me. It was on my MUST have list when I looked for my 981.

If there's no way of retro-fitting this, and I don't know of one, it may cost you dear in depreciation as buyers who don't want bluetooth phone connectivity would be few and far between I should have thought? Just my opinion.

Fit an aftermarket head unit. Fitted a Pioneer to my CGTS with Apple CarPlay. Way better than a STD Porsche fit PcM anyway

Thanks for the replies all.

Would be crazy to say no to a good car over the lack of telephone prep. It didn’t stop me and I imagine it’ll have some affect on resale but can hardly imagine it ‘costing me dear’. Still wouldn’t swap it for the 20’s or PSE

You didn't mention PASM in the options fitted. I have a PASM 981 with 20 inch wheels and it's impressively compliant but I've not driven one on 20s without PASM. Given the standard wheel size on the 2.7 was 18 inch iirc, I'd recommend you test drive it before committing as it may be a bit harsh as a daily driver.

You didn't mention PDLS either. These are a must have for me on a daily these days as I get older.

Carrera S wheels painted in black (partially) - wheel spokes centres and inner half of the rim circumference painted in high gloss black. Inner diameter of rim in Matt light grey. We have them on our car and are really smart, prefer them to fully black wheels as the rim merges colour wise with the tyre. The bright silver outer half of the circumference is bright finish. The wheels come as standard with coloured Centre wheel crests

Welcome,

recently got myself a 981 Cayman S in Carmine Red with about 22k's worth of options as well.

Post some pics up (you might of already as I'm at work and can't see pics)

Thanks for the replies again.

Had the chance to drive one without PASM, and there is no denying that it is firm! Fortunately I’m 6 miles from my office, so most of the time it’ll be doing that, so think I’ll be able to live with it.

PDSL - again, would of been nice but wasn’t a must have for me.

Wheels - thanks for the detail! I think they look great too, had to have the Carrera S 20’s.

Nice spec! Personally I would have wanted smaller wheels. 20s without PASM will get tiresome after a while. Telephone Prep also a must but maybe this can be retro fitted?

I think it depends what you are used to.
I had a 981 with 20" alloys no pasm and it was the smoothest porsche ive had to date. No problem with using it daily.

I actually own this car now (Hi James) and what I would say is it does ride very well given the size of the wheels but a little firm on 20's - more so at low speed as once you get above 50/60 mph it is less of an issue. With the roof down I hardly notice the stiffness as there is no noise from the interior/ roof. However with the roof up and on some of the lesser quality roads around where I live I find I notice the downside of the 20's a lot more in fact I had pretty much forgotten they were on there as the roof has been down for most of the summer. I have just purchased a set of 18's (yes I know they don't looks quite so cool) to run through the colder months where I will have the roof up more and keep the 20's looking nice for the summer. I have yet to try the 18's but I am hoping they smooth the ride out a little. They certainly have plenty of sidewall....

19's would probably have been my ideal choice if speccing the car for year round use especially on a 2.7 as they do make the brake discs look a bit small and they should be the best trade off between looks and ride quality.

I think the comments reflect my initial thoughts - with so many options and them being so expansive, you will most likely have to make a compromise when buying second hand. I’m
very happy with my spec albeit, it’s not perfect!

Spec is ok OP, lovely colour.

PASM is great, wonderful in fact but they don't ride badly as standard either even on 20s. I have driven 981s back to back on the NC500 with and without which is a great test for damping (see link in bio) so coming from BMW damping I think you will be satisfied.

PDLS - non essential but the headlights aren't brilliant, do you have Xenons at least?

Your PCM may have bluetooth already for making and receiving calls, do you have the USB socket in the glovebox. I have phone prep with the sim slot but it's unclear to me if these options are linked or separate, can anyone confirm?

Thanks - was only looking for a Guards Red car.
It will mainly be travelling 6 miles each way to my office, so the ride isn’t an issue for me.

PDSL - unfortunately not, may look to upgrade the bulbs for a slight improvement?

It does have a USB connection but I am fairly certain I won’t have handsfree calls - not really an issue for me fortunately.
