I’d read riptide was coming but I was delighted to see that when I opened up Waze on my phone this morning the screen popped up on the PCM. Fantastic news as it’s become the default Sat Nav for me, think it’s so much better than anything else.
how, lol I am in tech but hate anything tech … all the sims, wifi, phone bluetooth, Porsche online accounts, etc do my head in.I tried to use it Sunday and it said it was coming via my PCM but I could not see it. so switch sound back to phone.
this porsche online/connet thing is so complex, I wonder what happens when you sign up for every thing and you sell your car !
tried to watch iplayer last light, that now needs an account !!! and codes inputing etc
I gave up with track app, Porsche connect and every thing else, I think I need an hour in the car and manual to get my head round it.
do you pay per month to Porsche ? ? I note we got 6 moths free with connect , I don't want to pay any per month fee's

That's just Apple Carplay is it not? iOS12 gave that functionality to everyone who uses Carplay even those (like me) who don't own a Porsche!geeks said:

I got speed camera and average speed warnings. Gamechanger.
If you have a lot of CarPlay compatible apps they span across multiple screens on the car display, you can change the locations of the icons in your phone Settings-General-CarPlay, just like you rearrange phone icons on the phone screen.

Been a few years since we've had to specify NAV on one of our new cars (including the new Cayenne). Mid range and up they seem to try and get you with premium audio/etc now instead.Waze/Google Maps/Apple Maps only work as part of the Apple CarPlay option. If you have regular PCM without CarPlay they won’t work.
CarPlay requires your iphone to be plugged into the cars USB port (standard Apple cable). CarPlay can’t be used wirelessly. All the CarPlay apps are processed by your iphone and it’s 4G signal, not the cars GPS (essentially your PCM screen is just acting as a second screen for your phone). You are using your phone contracts data allowance to provide the Map information (to be honest it doesn’t use much). You do not need to place the phone anywhere special to find GPS satellites, it’s works off the phone signal. I believe one of the reasons you have to use the USB port to connect your iphone to the car (rather than wirelessly) is this allows your phone to use the cars (much bigger) aerial to maintain a stronger 4G connection.

Google maps and waze (owned by google) like any mobile navigation app uses gps for coordinates and data for downloading map info. Some apps (like Tom Tom) supply all the maps for your area, UK and Europe, USA etc and only use data for updates to the app. Others like Google maps download the maps as you use them offering the option to cache them for offline use. The phone needs to be able to receive satellite timing signals or google maps or waze won't work. They don't "work off the phone signal" and they don't mysteriously connect to the cars gps antenna either.CarPlay requires your iphone to be plugged into the cars USB port (standard Apple cable). I keep my mobile in the centre storage compartment between the seats. I noticed google maps was an option on my CarPlay the other day so had a play with it, it worked up to the point where I put the mobile back in the storage compartment then it just locked up and stayed stuck on the position where I had been parked when I programed the destination in. You can cache downloaded maps for offline use but you can't cache a gps signal! As I said Google maps doesn't work off the cars gps receiver, CarPlay basically mirrors your mobile screen so the mobile must be capable of receiving gps timing information.
Also Apple CarPlay can be used wirelessly, any of the latest Pioneer head units are capable of wireless Apple CarPlay connectivity.
You're also incorrect about your phone using the cars "much bigger aerial to maintain a stronger 4g connection", your mobile doesn't use the cars antenna, it uses its own.
All information supplied by my local ICE specialist who recently upgraded the abhorrent PCM in my 911, if anyone knows how these things work they do.

Depend on your 911.I keep my mobile in the centre storage compartment between the seats. The 991.2 features a special mobile phone shelf in the centre console that is said to offer improved mobile phone reception, so there must be something about it.
Also, I have tried waze and google maps with CarPlay recently, and honestly the new nav with google earth image and real time traffic on the 991.2 is still better, the traffic info is so accurate, very impressive, plus it then integrates into the binnacle pod too, and you can still add speed Cs,era warnings to it as poi, beet of both imo.

But no Porsche comes supplied with a Pioneer head unit, so I’m correct saying you must use a Cable to use CarPlay. You're also incorrect about your phone using the cars "much bigger aerial to maintain a stronger 4g connection", your mobile doesn't use the cars antenna, it uses its own.

And yes, it does use the cars antenna.

You said Apple CarPlay can't be used wirelessly, not that a standard Porsche PCM can't be used wirelessly, I'd have thought that was pretty obvious! And yes, it does use the cars antenna.
Connection to the cars antenna is great for your data but the gps chip doesn't use a data antenna so your mobile being connected to the cars antenna is of no use for it receiving gps timings.
Also the manual states use of the cars antenna via USB is dependant on equipment, so you better check your mobile is capable.
