I’ve been holding out for the revised Macan, but OPC telling me I’m looking at Late Q1 19 earliest before first delivers of new cars and only 2L available. I’m concerned the 2 L will be underpowered for a Porsche. Considered a new Cayenne but don’t need it be so big and delivery issues the same as Macan.
Can I ask my fellow PistonHeads for a few ideas on alternative? I need 4 seats, All wheel drive, something stylish not to flash, comfy cruiser, performance not necessarily a no1 concern (unless it’s a Porsche), 35-50k budget, would stretch if needed.
Other cars, Cayman & 991.1 (my long termer L200 is going)
I’ve purposely left out my shortlist to see what you guys come up with😀

If you want an SUV then the GLC 43 / 63 AMG is worth a look - although costs a lot to run though when you factor in depreciation. The good thing about the Macan is the residuals are best in class.

I'd seriously look at the new D5S Alpina. 4 wheel drive. Looks good. Nappa leather inside = quality feel to cabin. Enough torque to go like a stabbed rat and still return 40-50mpg. Rare sight on the roads. I was looking at them the other week and was very very tempted but bought another Cayenne instead. I'm having a bit of regret now not buying the Alpina.

A list in my view of similar vehicles would

Audi Q5
BMW X3
Mercedes GLC
Alfa Romeo Stelvio
Maserati Levante

Obviously there are variants within that are more Macan pitched...SQ5...43/63AMG....M40i etc

Buy a current Macan rather than the facelift. I think the base engines are pretty poor anyway to be honest, used Macan GTS ?!?! I’ve got a Turbo PP which has the GTS chassis, it’s a brilliant car. So capable dynamically for something of its size.

That’s a good shout - new one no different to old one - I’d have an old GTS over a new lower model any day of the week smile

GLC 63 S is easily the best mid size SUV on sale by virtue of its V8. It can be coaxed to 600 HP too with a modest spend with Brabus and all fully warrantied.

If something cheaper to buy/run is needed then I'd also suggest used Macan GTS/ turbo. Don't even entertain the new 2.0L Macan, its a VW engine and will be utterly gutless and disappointing in a Porsche SUV.

Made me look at the Macan classifieds....there are 20 GTS’s on here or the Porsche AUC site. They’ve sold 2500 according to howmanyleft in the last three years, That’s incredible! Shows how popular they are/how much owners like them. There are three times as many 911 GTS’s for sale and they sold probably a third of the amount of Macan GTS’s.

BMW X4
Alfa Romeo Stelvio
Maserati Levante
Jag E-Pace (F pace might be cheaper but you mentioned size was issue with the Cayenne).
Jag i-Pace

All SUV's that offer a reasonably engaging drive and a nod to aesthetics (subjective of course). Personally I'd go for the Stelvio as you don't see many of them on the road.

On a related note I don't think this is just a Porsche issue. We're in Mid November now and I've only seen a handful of 68 plate cars on the road :O

Yes, good shout on Macan GTS. Sounds, looks, and goes well. Always be sought after too.

Not wanting to sound a snob but I couldn't pay £50k on a poxy 2 litre. It's not a great engine, and IMO Porsche's shouldn't have 2.0 engines in them anyway.

Depends how much of that £50k you get back when you sell it.

A mate has just gone from an X6M to a 2.0 diesel Evoque. Wanted something smaller and more frugal. 17mpg. A strange choice IMO

I'm not necessarily after an SUV although its probably going to be one, as for the GLC, for me the styling is very safe, I can see it being a car I would enjoy owning, where as the D5S its not something I've considered, reading a few reports it does look good, the performance figures are incredible, my only reservation would be it being an oil burner!

Alfa Romeo Stelvio, now there's an option, I'd have one for the name alone smile

[quote=Montcoffer] Made me look as classified a littler closer also, I do think the Macan GTS or Turbo for that matter would fit the bill perfect, & I can see that option being at the top of my shortlist, there holding their value so well at present, do you think values will plummet once the revised Macan gets its 'proper' engines??

No. I think it'll be a while before we see GTS coming through for the facelift model.

The thing that triggers big depreciation for cars is when dealers/manufacturers start discounting cars or offering finance/lease deals to shift cars. With the relatively low volume of cars sold Porsche can sell cars with very little incentive for customers.

If Porsche have to start discounting the Macan to shift it that'll be because the wider market is in trouble....in that circumstance I'd argue that the Macan will depreciate less than other cars.
