So, on a similar format to another thread on here, I have long been a fan of Porches. My dad had one many moons ago which only strengthened my desire for them. I am tempted by a new one, but then I also kind of feel I want an older version, one that has character, offers a cheaper experience but can put a smile on my face.

Depending on the price it is unlikely it would end up my daily driver, but I would ideally want hassle free experience. By that I mean, I don't want to buy one which is going to end up regularly requiring work to fix as I have no experience or desire to do it myself, it would end with expensive bills.

Is there any advice you guys can provide on what to look out for, what to avoid, what these types of car are likely to be like to live with. Is my idea of no issue motoring an unachievable dream?

I am thinking of post 2000 911's but could range upward to 2013 ish, and could go earlier, depending on the risks/rewards of each and finding one that fits.

I appreciate this is a broad beginning, but I am eager to soak up advice from those with more experience than just looking at them as they pass by.

Thanks

Saw one of those on Porsche website and was tempted. Do they have good reliability? Any specific things I need to check for?

I love the shape

I recently scratched my itch with a 2015 Cayman S 3.4 (with GTS body kit on it), loving it.

pretty solid car that and a far better drive than anything newer, new cars have EPS and PTV so less driver focused and a bit fake esp the modern PSE's

depends what you are after and cost.

there is a reason a 987.2 S is more expensive than a base 981 now and why 991.1 911 are cheaper now than 997.2 GTS !!!
As a driver I cannot recommend 981's or 991.1's and if you want a solid car I would also avoid 2003 to 2009 cars.

small window 2009 to 2012 but the cars will feel the best and look after you price wise and running cost wise, a real sweet spot in the range.
You may even (dare I say it) make money if you look after a model from that window, Cayman R being the top 987.2 Cayman and 997.2 GTS being the top 911. but £45k and £65k cars.

I still say try a £23k 987.2 2.9 Cayman. or a 997.2 base 911 at about £40k taking into account sub 30k mile cars.

buy this before it's sold, rare as hens teeth and now 1/2 price from list.

this is all imho, so other members please don't quote me on how great 991.1 and 981 cars are, just fight your corner ;-) and post a good post for the OP.

Im in a similar position and doing my research for hopefully a purchase next year. Im not sure what your budget is but mine is ideally £32k.
Ive decided its going to be either a 996 Turbo or a 997 Carerra, im leaning toward the Turbo purely because it does not have the engine issues associated with the N/A 996 and 997 cars.
Im not really a big fan of the Boxster or Cayman but the head says could probably buy a more reliable car for the same money.
If i were to buy a 997 it would have to be a gen 2 or have had the full hartech treatment on the engine.(hard to find but do crop up now and again) but the budget creeps up considerably for gen 2 cars.

Not sure what your budget is, but a car I keep coming back to as a daily/weekend car is a manual 997.2 S Coupe - I drove one a few times and to me it feels like the sweet spot of the modern 911 range if you don’t want a GT car
For a higher budget and a more focused driving experience, I have similar feelings about a 997.1 GT3 - but I would buy that more with a focus on track and weekends as opposed to daily use. I have not driven one of those though and only go by a brief ownership experience of a 997 GT2, which I quite enjoyed but realized the engine was a bit much for me / I enjoy n/a engines more

just an update. Appreciate all the advice. I have had a brief look but family been ill so not had any time to get out and see any. Also that voice in my head is telling me to be sensible and buy something lesser but new for the hassle free driving. Need to test drive one asap to make sure the heart continues to speak louder than the head
