First thing i would do is junk torsion bars and fit coilovers all round.
Strut brace only required if you have plastic front wings.
If you want grippy road tyres,go the khumo route like all the hillclimbers use.
Now thats caused you a dilemmasmile
surely we're now talking taking the car down a whole different route though aren't we if looking at junking torsion bars & replacing with coil overs .. also would need some bodyshell strenthening around the top shock mounts in that situation ? .. you sure you're not just being bad and pushing him into the depths of motorsport & the endless quest for seconds wink

Road use and an early 911 on stockish torsion bars is a well tried & tested route
Always bad mate!
Torsion bars work great when set up is good, but not to stiff.
Coil overs give you a better ride wet and dry and good traction, easy to adjust the ride heights etc
You can do all you want to your engine, but when another car has xtc on or intrax fitted on the road, they ride so well and just disapear with out the bucking bronco.
Assuming you have the sc roll bars fitted as standard are ok,but not adjustable as the elephant or rsr type rollbars which you dont need for the road really.
good standard porsche equipment works very well on the road with a good geo set up,of which i am sure chris will do well.
Trouble is when you start replacing old for new,you start chaseing the worn parts like rear arm bushes, roll bar bushes, engine and box mounts, front a arm bushes, top mounts etc etc.
Have fun with it.
Sent an email to Chris at CG yesterday and we’ve agreed to start as planned and maybe move up the gears later, but thanks for your advice smile

Sorry missed the bit on engine numbers, great its a rs spec engine with mag cases etc,but it wont match one of the 2.7rs with out a number, unless it has a factory id as a replacement case to replace the original cases with a number.
There are replacement cases around with no numbers,so you can put what ever number you like on it if you so wish!;)
Get yourself booked onto a prescott tuition day like robbo, learn plenty and get a bit of a feel for hillclimbing.I remember me and 993sr doing a school day there years ago.
Have my first round of the championship this weekend at loton park near shrewsbury, cant wait its been a long winter, will put a vid up of it next week.
Re Hillclimb training at Prescott I’ve emailed someone called Emily to see if I can get some tuition on the 22nd - but I can’t see anything related to training on that day on their website - hopefully I can start trading too ?

I bet he did not sleep last night watching that film, thats just the car i am trying to describe as a end point.
That is just utterly fantastic...the more and more I think about it that’s where I want to get to. No friggin idea where to start though!

Found this yesterday in the classifieds....I am sure given it’s Hairpin it’s Le Wrong Prix.

Very nice - looks like we might end up on this journey together - I know you have been thinking about scratching the itch for a while now smile
Ha yes. I'm thinking I'll sell my 997 GTS....and buy a car as a starting point for this. I'm thinking I want something that's going to end up looking like an ST...love the look of the slightly wider rear arches. I remember watching the build videos of Chris Harris's green 911 "Kermit" when he was working for Autocar....that just hit a note with me.

I think I'll start by visiting the likes of Autofarm, Tuthill etc and see what they have to say. My technical knowledge is limited to say the least...I would be the Porsche equivalent of the bloke in the HiFi shop in the Not the Nine O'Clock News sketch https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TxQqWSnsHoAbiggrin

Speak to Paul at Tutts, or Richard. Drove Kermit and Olive, and plumped for Olive, just a fantastic car.

So they still have Kermit ? Did they buy it back ? Olive is a stunning car...had a proper ogle when I saw it at Bicester Sunday Scramble. Do you know why whoever commissioned it sold the car without seemingly using it much ? Seems that quite often these cars come back on the market after a long build process. Seems nuts!

Agreed, had one before 3.0RSR rep from a 2.4S from
Scratch with FIA papers didn’t work out as planned and put me off for a while.

Something like olive LHD for EU jaunts and the odd track day with a stonking motor decent lights and AC.

Sure, the body and chassis were done by a great guy in Germany, sadly he is no longer with us but a proper RSR rep nothing skimped on.

Things went wrong with the motor and gearbox which came from a ‘well respected’ US company who are Super at that Tec.

Put bluntly, the whole drivetrain which I paid for at great expense being assured of a 330bhp motor was a mess and they refused any recompense and basically it went from bad to worse.

It needed a lot of work to get it sorted which we did and got the FIA papers but the drivetrain was never what it should have been and I lost interest in the end, leaving a bitter taste after spending deep into 6 figures.

Doing it again I’d have a narrow body LHD car with a great motor from Tuthill few mod cons like good lights and AC to and not be so worried about FIA papers as it would be a car to enjoy and not compete in.

Hindsight etc smile

Sure, just let me finish waxing my beard.

Off a 72s shell, engine is based on a 3.0-litre flat-six, now 3.6, GT3 crankshaft, uprated conrods, pistons and barrels fed by high butterfly MFI. 1020kg wet.
340bhp to rears, twin plug dizzy, rebuilt 915 box, 6 pot front/4 pot rear upgraded brakes running on Pirelli D4 Corsa’s on 7x15 and 9x15 original Fuch.
Runs Exe-TC single adjust comp dampers, which for me, combined with the immense torque and pick up from 1800, make this the best blend of power and handling I’ve ever experienced in an early 911.
Olive was built as an evolution to Kermit , which is also a fantastic car. Kermit was running on different tyres and set up far softer than Olive when I tested.

In comparison, the yellow 72 ST is a massive handful, frantic acceleration from 4500, 250bhp from short stroke 2.5lt off higher G60 cams. 980kg and exact in engine, chassis and body specification to original car. Different all together to Olive, and a huge event to drive. So light, totally stripped out, with fibre glass front wings and hood.

Olive off to Alps in September for a week of sweaty palm thrashing with a few other beards who are similarly hooked on the 70’s cars.
Bit of Matt Munro, cracking crew, and Olive....perfect.

Thanks , sounds like a bit of a nightmare - I guess I imagine it’s not a simple & straightforward path to tread, which is why I’m so clueless about how to tackle this one.

I can empathise with your story; I had a great deal of “fun” importing and fully restoring a 964, 3.6 Turbo from NZ - financially it was like peeling an onion. Nothing wrong with the car & sold by a very genuine & super nice bloke, however when it arrived it turned out one of the cylinders heads was losing power - this hadn’t been picked up on the pre purchase inspection by Porsche in NZ & was by no means a “biggie”

Once the engine was out the self inflicted onion peeling started. It was a case of sod it, “if the engines out I may well do the top end as it’ll need doing at some point”. As is the way with these things, once you restore one thing the rest starts looks tired ; maybe the paint could do with a refresh ; sod it let’s do a bare metal, windows out, respray ; one thing leads to another and before you know it, I had a f**c it moment and decided to change the brief to ; let’s restore it back to a showroom perfect example . When finished, it was the most beautiful thing. So here’s the rub ; I never really enjoyed driving it, it was too heavy and GT like, a truly lovely thing, but not agile enough for my driving taste : held onto the car for about 6 months telling myself I’ll grow to love it - but the bond never formed and I finally gave up trying to love something I didn’t gel with & it was sold. I guess lust and love are two very different things smile

However, every time a see a photo of it I miss it : Got to say I did genuinely really enjoy the journey and I have no regrets.
