I'm not a watch collector, and only have a couple of other watches - CWC black diver's watch (worn daily for last 20 years), a Casio Ediface, and a quartz Omega Constellation that I'm probably going to sell as it looks a bit small.

For the last couple of years I'd been on the lookout for another watch slightly smarter than the CWC but a bit different.

Well, I've ended up with my very first automatic watch, and I have to say that I'm very pleased with how it looks, and also the service from Aevig. The watch arrived very quickly, and as I tend to keep watches a long time, I had ordered a spare strap. The spare came with a silver buckle (the one on the watch is black). I emailed Aevig and got a quick reply from Chip Yuen (I understand he's the designer) who immediately sent me a black buckle which arrived a couple of days later.

I've had the watch a couple of weeks, and it is consistently gaining around 8 seconds per day. Having looked up a bit about automatics, I understand this is not bad in itself, but I should see how it goes after a few months as new watches take a while to "wear in". If it's still gaining consistently, then I understand it could be adjusted, although to be honest, I'm happy if it stays as it is. I'm not expecting quartz accuracy, and there is something almost magical about the fact that there are just a bunch of cogs and a spring inside, yet it winds itself and keeps pretty accurate time.

Anyway, I've had a go at taking a few pictures today. Click a couple of times for larger versions:

Aevig Corvid full lume in black DLC case
The movement is a Swiss made STP 1-11 automatic: 28.800 beats with 26 jewels.
Cost normally €530, currently available for €499

Just a quick update on my first automatic.

I've been wearing this watch continuously and it seems to have settled down now - initially it gained around 8 seconds a day for a couple of weeks, then changed to losing around 5 seconds a day. No real change in the pattern of wearing it.

It now appears to be far less variable and over the past month has been very consistent in losing on average 1.75 seconds per day with a variance between 1.0 and 2.5 seconds a day.

As I wear it every day, I haven't actually wound it since the 5th December.
I set it to be 2 minutes ahead of the actual time on 1st Jan and it's now 1 minute 10 seconds ahead.

Is the above behaviour typical of an automatic with significant variance initially, then more consistent performance after a while?

I still really like the watch, and the full lume dial is very readable even after quite some time in the dark.

I'd be interested in people's thoughts on the watch in general and the behaviour in relation to what is normally expected of automatics?

It's certainly not unknown for a movement to bed-in, so to speak. The most important thing is that it settles to a consistent and predictable loss or gain given a particular wear pattern on the wrist, yours appears to have settled well and given the small loss and variance I'd say you have nothing to worry about.

Never really had this before, but the Yema Superman I bought recently has done the same thing. First week and it seemed to be gaining 8-10 seconds a day, let it sit for a few days and it seems to have settled down into a far more accurate state. Odd, put it down to its moody French movement. hehe

Do like the look of those Aevigs by the way.
