Hi, rather annoyingly my Cayman R battery has finally given up on me (original Mol) and it was due its 8th year service tomorrow. It’s got a trickle charger on it but must have finally died as when going to start it the electrics all went very strange! What battery replacements do people recommend? I’m letting the warranty lapse this July anyway so I’m assuming some sort of Bosch. Also regarding changing it is it simply a case of remove and replace?
Cheers

£750? Is that right? Think I’d be better off going on a diet to save the weight. Can anyone tell me what Bosch I need and is it a simple diy job?

Match the spec of the original - depending on the options you'll have either a 370 or 380 Amp in there.

Not to derail the thread but IMO the Warranty is a nice peace of mind addition and as biased as I may be, is one of the most comprehensive regards coverage - why let it lapse?

Re warranty just decided the car is 8 years old and I don’t want to continue with having to get everything that Porsche insist on such as batteries, N tyres etc.
I don’t plan on selling the car so no benefit to a future purchaser.
So back on topic I think a Bosch S5 is what I need?

Yep - I've got an S5 on my 997. And, for the record I've dealt with Tayna twice. Excellent service both times, delivery within 48 hours.

I've just replaced my original Banner battery in my Boxster S with a Yuasa 096 AGM battery as it failed during lockdown. Once my OPC re-opened (it had been due in for a service at the end of March) the OPC reprogrammed the Gateway for me to tell it that it was an AGM battery - the original wasn't. How vital this programming is I don't know, but I believe it does affect the charging strategy. I don't know if the Cayman R has this same Gateway as it's a 987 car, or if it benefits from an AGM battery. More details on my Pheasant thread at https://www.pistonheads.com/gassing/topic.asp?h=0&...

Assumed the banner was AGM standard as the 981 has stop start.

No the original banner has no mention of being stop start or AGM. And the gateway in the car can be programmed for AGM or non-AGM batteries. What I can say is that stop-start rarely engaged previously, and when it did the engine stayed off for only a few seconds. With the new battery the engine will stop almost every time, and it stays off until I'm ready to move off even if that's several minutes at a level crossing. Most of the time I'm in sport or sport plus mode, so stop-start is inhibited anyway. But at least now I have the option to use it when I'm in London which I am once or twice a month.

Ok battery ordered from Tayna and it’s due to arrive later today. I’m keen to get it fitted ASAP which I plan to do myself. Is it simply just a case of out with old and in with the new or is there a certain process to follow and will I get a load of errors etc.? It’s due it’s 8 year service next week anyway which it’s booked into OPC for but I’d rather not incur any more costs for resetting anything if I can do it myself,
Any tips much appreciated!

Yes it's dead simple. Put a small board in the front boot stand in it unbolt pull out. There's lots of visual aid YouTube videos for Boxster and Cayman.

My socket to undo the metal strap on the firewall dropped off and went under the battery tray - so I had to take that out to retrieve my socket which was a bit of unexpected fun. Still it was all very easy.

Job done, very simple indeed. Makes you wonder how the costs can be so high for doing this.

What's the small board for?

I managed to get the battery out of my 996 I think without standing in the boot. I also have a 981 and it's battery is probably twice the weight so yeah I stood in the boot for that. I recently removed it and temporarily replaced it with an AGM I got cheap as a spare off eBay. You can hopefully see the Jaguar badge on the battery in this pic.

Once you've man handled one of these batteries in and out of the car you just can't shake the belief that it's a big heavy lump which is probably situated in the worst spot on the car.

I reckon there must be an easier way to go light weight without spending 6 or 700 quid on an anti gravity. I just need a bit more enthusiasm.

One final probably stupid question regarding the transport plugs. The battery has one on each side with instructions to remove them. On the right hand side there is a tube which clearly goes into the battery to deal with any overflow from expansion. What about the left? Do I keep the plug in or just remove and leave open?
