a 997 as a daily, long commuter and only car?

I had a comparable scenario a few months ago.
I bought a 997.1 C2S. Won't spam your page so if you're interested see my other thread but it was a bloody good decision that I haven't once regretted.
Worried about engine rebuild or is it an overstated concern?I bought a 997.1 C2S. Won't spam your page so if you're interested see my other thread but it was a bloody good decision that I haven't once regretted.
However, is it still a concern? Well yes but all performance cars have flaws to a degree.

It's only one commute per week. Doing 2 or 3 of them would get very tedious for sure, but one Monday morning and one Thursday evening per week? I can't believe people couldn't stomach a 997 for that.
Obviously it is just one opinion but for that sort of weekly travel I'd far rather be in a 997 than any diesel hatchback... I would look forward to the (tedious) journey in a 911 and dread it in a normal car.

I’m the 160mile a day for 5 years person, so with this lockdown guff, I’m missing driving it and it’s making me nervous that I’m not driving it and something will dry up/stop working through lack of use.
F-Type. This is the Porsche section, so to be harsh, I’d rather be in my 2006 997 C2S than any JLR product. I have no basis for this, other than a phobia of British made infotainment systems and British electrics...and some event experience of failing L322 Range Rovers.
Cayman. Probably sensible.
Z4. Yeah, but as a first time Porsche owner, the 997 doesn’t really have any interior bits, like dials it stalks shared with other cars. A BMW is a BMW if it’s an M8 or a 120d.
Go for what you feel is right (and manual)

Hi Spearman,
What are the prices and ownership costs like for an F type?
My mate bought one a year ago (a 3 yr old car, circa £33k IIRC. What are the prices and ownership costs like for an F type?
December it was poorly with a fked injector - that could not be removed, and had to be bored out.
Same has happened again this month, two on the other bank - waiting a week now for them to be removed as also stuck.
I do believe cars at this end of the scale must have a good warranty.
FWIW I'd take a gen 2 997 over his F-Type all day long. A 911 (and sorry to repeat oneself) in Targa format makes an amazingly practical fast express car

I'll have a look, but it is just over my budget.
What costs did you encounter running it?
Please don’t take this the wrong way - but a few grand here or there is insignificant with some bork bills these cars can throw up, never mind the maintenance that seems to be Pork specific. (corroding brake pipes, condensors etc.)What costs did you encounter running it?
Mine cost circa £1200 a year via an Indy, over and above tyres and the normal.

I'd probably entertain offers. What costs did you encounter running it?
It hasn't been too bad really, I've done some of the work myself and had some done at garages, rough estimates here:
Aircon rads - £90 ea, no labour as I did these
Discs and pads - £300 in parts, no labour
Aircon pipe - £400, £100 part and lots of labour, I did NOT want to do this
Coils - £300 or so, garage did it as part of service
Suspension mount - £200-300, garage bill

Parts for Porkers.
They're not made of special Munich magic unobtanium you know.
Unless you are on a (handcuffs) Porsche UK warranty, you can put what you want on. If the size is right, then go for it.
Between the manufacturing years for the 997 and now, lots of companies have started making parts, some of them sold the parts to Porsche ready to be branded.
For example Porsche 997 battery =Moll =pants. Proper battery = Bosch.
Porsche N rated tyres =restrictive. Full market choice of tyres = good
When my rear coil springs went bang, my local family owned garage tried to source replacements, got some from a German independant at half the Porsche UK price, and fitted them themselves. Think dusty old shed with three blokes and air guns (and a special spring compressor)
When they came, they were in a Porsche branded box, but made by Gnartteers GmbH.
And I rented a Fiat 500 for 4 days to get to work.....
