My 996TT has been in the hands of Indies since I bought it at 6 years and 48k miles. 12 years on and 120k it's been looked after at Wrightune (Wallingford) and when I moved to Hertfordshire I had a chat with the local OPC and instead took it to Matt @ Porschacare in Stevenage. Both Indies have had plenty of money out of me but I feel I've got far more work done (the right work) and much better value.

I'd not hesitate at taking an older car out the main dealer network, in fact I'd recommend it.

For me it's about dealing with a human you believe in to do a good job at a fair price.

Plus... if a place with a reputation like 9E was on my doorstep it would be a no brainer. My only worry would be the cost of the inevitable upgrades!!!

9e aren’t on my doorstep but I have been very happy with their service both standard 2 yearly, MOT, suspension, alignment and tuning. I decided my 981 GT4 would be a long term keeper and was recommended to go there by someone on here. Always nice to drop in and see them.

Update | For the 'hassle' factor I've decided to stock with OPC (which is £300 more) than 9E (or equivalent). I know that someone like 9E would do just as good a job, but three factors emerged. a) Maintain OPC stamps b) Proximity and C) 12-hour loan of a Taycan Turbo whilst Spyder is in the garage.

Make sure you put 1000 miles on Taycan and attempt your very own 24 hours of Le Mans. I may have to book my next service with Porsche Aberdeen hehe

If this is a vote for or against OPC's, I think it depends as much as anything on the relationship that you have with your local specialist.

I own a GT4 with has been modified by a variety of specialists who without exception have done a fabulous job and since made over a period of time, have enabled me to learn and evolve as a trackdays enthusiast .. taking tuition at every opportunity.

At five years I have stopped having the car serviced at my OPC ... so much is non standard that I was asking them not to touch. No criticism intended, but Porsche do not encourage modification even when by Manthay ....

I am based in Leeds and have used Strasse for years. They are amazing. With a small collection of 10 cars they look after them all and are phased by nothing. They offer exceptional impartial advice often offering a variety of service / development / repair options and technical solutions to known historical issues.

To be fair, I often go with the most comprehensive solution rather than the cheapest ... but they have certainly gone the extra mile for me, so it's difficult to justify the extra cost of the local OPC stamp.

When things go wrong, they are the first to take the pain out of this with their quiet reassurance and breadth of competence.

These are the people IMHO who make Porsche such a fantastic brand ...

I’ve used indies for my last three cars and never been disappointed. I’ve decided to try 9E next spring when the service is due on my 997.2 turbo. Their reputation is great so it’s a no-brainer for me. I just couldn’t stand the upselling BS from OPCs and, as someone’s already pointed out, I’d have no idea if a 16 year old apprentice had been tasked with looking after my car. With a decent indie you form a relationship with the mechanics and other staff members over time and always know exactly who is working on the car.

A good friend of mine had need to get his Targa roof fixed a few yrs ago & it was obvious that the OPCs didn’t have the experience & their quote reflected it too. He used Precision & when we dropped the car off we had a full tour & met the technician (also a frequent contributor on 911uk) who would do the work - their level of service was IMO better in many ways than an OPC & they appreciated it might be a one off visit for the car as we’d travelled some serious distance, but they still treated him well & he sensibly also had some other jobs done whilst it was “away” & their health check report was honest & fair with good advice around certain consumables.
