Oulton Park RS Day - 2023… post your pics and chat
Discussion
Season opener for many of us… and once again cheers to the organisers… you know who you are.
Dry day, but cold temps and green circuit made for an interesting’ morning!!
Few big stoppages, lots of cars and with some people still not understanding the difference between quick driver and fast car.
But overall pace of the day was quite good.
Personally was getting used to the new car and the new setup, once up to speed, I was able to take quite a big step in pace and improvement in my PB and also consistency so good start to the season for me.
Nice to meet up with familiar face and new ones.
Hopefully pics and videos will start to filter through soon.

Good to see you again T, and thanks for the pax laps - luckily we made it out for a few at the end!
A shame I couldn't be out on track, I think I would have liked the afternoon. The morning was a bit of a write off though. I hope the drivers of the two cars that crashed are OK. I assume the race car 996 driver was fine as the car was out again in the afternoon after being on its roof...
My favourite car of the day was the Mexico Blue 4.0 RS - which wasn't hanging about! Great to see one being used in anger

What a great day it was. ‘‘Twas me the Mexico RS. My first day back at the RS day since 2017 I think it was. Weather was great and huge kudos to the 996 driver who got back out in the afternoon after the upside down moment.
Lacked a bit of confidence in the morning not helped by new out of the mould cups but enjoyed it more and more as the day went on. Had some great tangles on track on the afternoon and the etiquette was generally of a high standard.
Nice seeing some of the modern pork stuff too, PDK aside

We had a good 1:2 just before lunch. I was in a 992 GT3, shark blue. Manual though, so not entirely driving itself!Lacked a bit of confidence in the morning not helped by new out of the mould cups but enjoyed it more and more as the day went on. Was just nice to see your car being spanked!

992 looked lush and glad you were enjoyed it as much as I did.
The very cold crisp dry air felt liked it added a few horses to the NA Porsches. Quite a few said their cars felt sharper than usual at the top end. My last track day at Oulton before this RS day was by coincidence on the July 2022 record hot day. It was showing 38C before midday and we had to leave early because the tyres and brakes were running too hot.
My 718GT4 with the Fabspeed straight pipe exhaust didn't feel much less powerful than my 991.2RS WP did at 38C temps.

Good to see you all over the couple of days, lucky with the weather again if a little cold, late nights, good banter and the odd beer or two
Dont know what was happening with the chaos of the morning,we have never had a day like it in all of the 22 years its been running, real shame and have received a few complaints about the morning.
There was certainly some drivers pressuring other drivers, especially a silver gt3rs track day car, practice what you preach comes to mind!
Its always been a day intended to welcome new comers to enjoy a safe day in a special car without some one sat on your bumper or overtaking through the corners,it just does not help and not welcome.
It was tricky conditions with the temps to work with the tyres, and folk finding out the hard way.
Otherwise it was a great day in the afternoon, and the last hour always the best with the track to yourself.

My first day back out in the GT4 after a run with the 944 Turbo Cup which now needs new front discs. I couldn't find the drilled discs which are currently on the car but have discovered that an undrilled disc was fitted from standard, so that's what will go back on come MOT time !
The ST's had been skimmed and over winter I had fitted the low ratio crown wheel and pinion and single mass flywheel and clutch.
I was disappointed with myself in the morning but the afternoon came better ... right hand corners were great but somehow I couldn't get Cascades right which affected the pace down Lakeside ... as always, I need practice
I am delighted to see that those who I have encouraged down the modification path are seeing the benefits ... there is a huge difference between a standard 718GT4 and this car with the Manthey upgraded suspension ... mine has an early version of this and after 20,000 miles it is still very confidence inspiring ... though not on Cascades ? Maybe this was just a mind game, we still pulled 1.2g but Shell Oils was 1.54 etc
Gearing was third and fourth almost everywhere with fitth at the end of Lakeside and the Pit Straight .... and second only overtaking slower cars out of Shell Oils etc. Even so I wonder if third would have done a better job because the gear change came very quickly.
On the drive to Oulton the car recorded 27mpg with 70mph being at 3250 ish ... around town and country lanes 20mpg ... but so much fun ! Yes it is better than the standard gear ratios ... but I would say more so on the road than on track ... as discussed at the end of a passenger ride where I asked for an educated opinion from the passenger seat ! But I guess this may change when I have a little more practice with the new set-up ...
When I received the old pinion gear back I noticed that the case hardening had broken down in places ... this is a topic on the Porscheclub Forum but I can start a separate topic on this if anybody is interested. After 30,000 miles and only one gearbox oil change (for running in) maybe this isn't bad, but Porsche will not supply the parts separately so the best option then might be to fit the lower ratio final drive .... ? Or an expensive new gearbox ... maybe not !
The lower gear pinion has a reduced bearing area on the crown wheel so will be more susceptible to failure ... the cure being more regular gearbox oil changes particularly if you have a more aggressive diff which will add heat ! RPM tell me that regular gear oil changes are the solution ... with the Gripper diff they have fitted they are changing every three very hard trackdays. With my standard diff I will change with engine oil at around 3500 miles which would be a mid season thing ...
What I love about this day is the range of historic cars that one would not normally enjoy ... Melv's 964 Cup is beautiful as is Paul's 2.8 RSR above .... and the 4.0l etc etc.
So, a cold but good day in the end ... and thankfully the problems were other people's, the red flags gave good chat time

I was chatting to my passenger whilst following a few of said “older cars” because it was like a warm down lap so I had the mental capacity for talking.
What I was saying, before anyone bites, is that I’d crash one of those older cars almost immediately! Most of them looked a right handful!
MPG shot for posterity with 45 min back road commute each end:

Here’s some G force comparison, last week versus a 20 degree day last June. Shows what a difference track temp makes, even when it’s bone dry.
I’d love to see the same data from that 996 Cup car that went into the tyre wall.Just glad no one was hurt. Metal and plastic can be replaced.
