I had the 1st manual Cayenne in the country did 25,000 in the thing took it round Bedford on a trackday
,drove to Corsica in the car and thought it was an all round great car
the kids loved it and Mrs though it one of the best cars we have owned
it was metallic blue with 20inch wheels but always averaged 18mpg
It was rare you saw another Cayenne back then ! - I took it off- road once and got stuck in the mud !
Now you see too many Cayennes around ( like the new minis ) its more of a fashion accessory than a 4x4
Im now driving a 4x4 which seats 9 people,is congestion charge free ,other drivers of the marque always acknowledge you ! -it has air con, heated seats and a lot of character

+ I dont have the attitude of other drivers towards me which I had in the Cayenne

.......... a Land Rover Defender

Ah yes, the power and handling of a Land Rover Defender, the taught chassis as you throw it into a corner, the raw grunt as you power through an overtaking manouvre on a country A road and the way it delivers you to your destination 350 miles away as fresh as a daisy.

A manual Cayenne, now there`s a thing. It`ll still be out there somewhere so don`t forget to ask before setting off on a long trip to view a potential purchase!

I dont think that land rover owners are acknowledging each other when they flash their lights, I think they are just checking that they still work and none of the knobs or buttons have fallen off.

OK so if the Cayenne is so very bad what else would people suggest?

What else goes as fast, handles as well, has the size/space and still has the presige (I know this may be a taste thing but it is still a Porsche!)

RS4 or RS6, E55 or M5 Touring? Not Porsche on the prestige-ometer maybe but still German.

Did consider a Cayenne turbo (in black as it hides the ugliness somewhat) when our youngster eliminated 911 hopes for a couple of years but just bought an RS4 and can't wait for it to arrive. Was very impressed with the Cayenne and not knocking it as a purchase but for me it didn't add any interior room for its extra bulkiness and weight; I don't need to tow anything and do not need to feel superior by looking down everyone - which seems to be the main benefot of that lofty driving position (OK probably helps the wife to park but RS4 has beepers back and front).

The Cayenne Turbo was the choice of transport for those heading down to the south of France a few summers ago.

Seeing an automotive mountain boom past you on the motorway at 150+ while 'ambling' along in a VX220 at 100ish is quite something.

Very impressive cars, but would I own one? No.
