Haven't spent any money on the engine............yet wink

however i'm fairly familiar with what's possible and available and how much it costs - which if you're thinking of modifying the engine internals is usually lots.

This is quite and interesting proposition. Very compelling whe you think of the overall cost as its really a new car.

Some of this could be relevant to what your trying to achieve?

But that seems to be the whole car for 25 large... not just the engine. Interesting proposition though seeing as how cheap boggo 964s are and how expensive 964RSs are. To think I bought a whole 964RS for less than the cost of that conversion tho'... shows how times change smile

Engine wise, rebuilding the 964 engine completely (top and bottom end) is likely to be at least a 10k exercise; it simply isn't cheap when done properly. Yes, you can go for nicer cams, Arrow or Carrillo rods, ARP head studs, maybe even a 3.8 conversion - but if your barrels aren't knackered 3 grand says you'll want to keep them. Some of the parts like uprated conrods may potentially be cheaper than OEM items, so if you chat this through with your engine builder, you could get some parts uprated for the same or less money.

The simple fact is that a healthy 964 engine with some minor external (not internal) tweaks can knock on the door of 300bhp. Spending a lot on internal components won't yield a huge amount more without supercharging or Motec, and both of these add to the expense by the time the whole package has been completed.

I would suggest a straight and sensible rebuild, fully costed out, rather than worrying about upgrades. Some may be possible along the way, but chasing bhp in a normally aspirated engine beyond basic stuff will lead to your wallet going into hiding. If you want more bhp, sell the car and buy a turbo. Cost of getting out of a 964 and into a 964 Turbo is less than a straight engine rebuild, or maybe even just a top end rebuild.

Wise words above from Domster smile

You might like to know that since I started tracking the car 7 years ago I haven't felt the need to increase the engine power although I've made alterations pretty much everywhere else.

As Domster says with a healthy engine ( or frankly not so healthy - my own engine has been wanting a rebuild for the last 2 years yet is still putting out 300hp and has never been touched internaly) you can get 300hp with fairly cheap and simple intake/exhaust changes. After that it starts to get expensive for modest improvements in power. Money is better spent improving the cars performance in other areas.

You can put a 993tt engine in them. They are normally in dismantlers from 6-10k.

That should scratch an itch wink

You also need to modify a lot more than the spoiler to make the package work, but it has been done. "Normally in"... nowt wrong with that... I know of at least a couple of engines for sale and 6-10k is a good ballpark. A few years ago there was one offered in the trade for 4k.

If the 964 engine is an early on without the additional cylinder head sealing rings - you can modify the cylinders to accept a sealing ring (we do).

GT3, I have gone the whole hog (pretty much) with Ninemeister - and I can tell you that it is far from cheap! I currently have a highly modified 964C2 which is showing 371hp and 462Nm on Ninemeister dyno, the engine was fully rebuilt only about 600-700 miles ago. I may have a need to sell it, and I would like it to go to a good home. We can take this offline if you prefer - just let me know how to contact you or PM me or whatever is possible on this board.....I can give you all the details, or you can speak to Colin Belton yourself..?

how bout a cam upgrade - circa 700USD for some new billets from John Dougherty http://www.drcamshafts.com/ - well respected on PelicanParts. Then maybe a similar amount getting a live remap by Wayne Schofield.

Injector clean/service?

Hi

The car itself completely 'revamped' mechanically, so its not just engine but it also has RS brakes, H&R coilovers with RS antiroll bars, Veloce GT wheels, LSD and so on
With regards to money spent, I have added up the cost of the parts only (with the prices as they were when I purchased them) and the parts cost alone is £20K (give or take a couple of hundred quid). I have not even included labour but you get the idea.....If you want to do what I have done today, I guess it will probably set you back about £20K alone in the engine, plus whatever other enhancements you may need to cope with the engine, such as brakes etc.

My car is also Guards Redsmile
